Joe Pass Chord Licks 3: ii-V Ascending 3 Note Chords

This phrase is very typical of Joes chord soloing, in that it features an ascending group of three-note chords on the iim7 chord, that then resolves with a descending chromatic melody line on the V7 chord that leads to the Imaj7 chord in bar two.The chords in the first two beats are pairs of triads, Bb and C, which is a common sound that is found in a lot of famous players solo ranging from Bebop to Modern and everything in between. To learn more about this technique check out my article on 3 to 7 Triads. As well, the first C7 voicing is a C13 with no root, but is voiced as an Em11b5 chord. This is also a technique that Joe and many other players like to use in their comping and chord soloing. To learn more about this technique, check out my article on 3 to 9 Arpeggios.
