From my Daily Activity Report, Saturday, December 13:
2221: Received call from resident in Apt 323 concerning smoke in B building.
Arrived to find no smoke as advertised, only a strong smell of barbeque. Advised
resident that barbeque odors presented no current danger to his building. Resident
stated it was not barbeque. Informed him that I had detected the same smell earlier
near the barbeque grills. Resident insisted it was not barbeque. Checked walls for
heat on all three floors of Building B. Observed that the smell resided only in the
Building B hallways which have open air flow from the barbeque grills directly
below in the adjoining pool area. Checked Building B rooftop. Walked around the
outside of the suspect building checking apartment balcony windows for any
flickering lights within which would indicate an alternate source of barbeque
odors than the one I suspected and found none. Called resident in apartment 323
and informed him of the many steps I had taken to determine the cause of the
smokeless odor, but he remained unconvinced. Invited resident to call the fire
department as an alternative to waking up all the residents of the building and
evacuating them to an unbarbequed area and assured him that I would wait
diligently for the fire department at the main entrance and guide them to the area
that smelled of barbeque but the resident declined to call them. I assured him that
I would keep a watchful eye on the building during the night and step up patrols
for any suspicious odors and even for actual smoke if any manifested and resident
seemed partially appeased. Was unable to patrol parking lots at the 2230 hour or
monitor party traffic during this period of barbeque alarm.
2300: Received call from resident in apt 255 concerning loud and obnoxious music emanating from apt. 155.
Since I was positioned just a few feet outside apartment 155’s open balcony door at the time of the distress
call from 255, I could hear the offending Barry Manilow music and swiftly knocked on 155’s door. Man
answering door greeted me with “We’ve turned it down.” Left it at that as there is current heavy foot traffic
through main entrance; a dozen young (mid twenties) males milling about and indulging loudly and
exuberantly in puerile reveries. Stood arms akimbo near gate until they departed.
