Radio waves and Its Hazardous Effect to the Human Body Thesis statement: Although radio waves can

provide a vast majority of uses to us. It can cause a vast majority of diseases as well, like cancer, miscarriage, cataract and DNA Damage Introduction: According to American Cancer Society almost all of your technological devices emit invisi le o jects called electromagnetic waves. !e use these waves for cooking food, for communicating with others and for medical check"ups. #lectromagnetic waves are very useful in our day to day lives ut these waves can cause ha$ardous effects to our odies when we are over e%posed to them. In this research paper you will now a out the ha$ards, the enefits and types of electromagnetic waves.

"efenition of Electroma!netic Waves #lectromagnetic waves are just similar to radio waves and electromagnetic fre;uencies. *hey produced a energy and emitted radiation. Electromagnetic radiation can be a transferring energy and could be viewed as carrier of information. Radio Waves can be absorbed by certain nuclei causing them to reverse their spin. They are used in NMR and can give information about the environment of certain atoms.

It includes light in its several forms9 visi le light, radio waves, television roadcast, microwaves, ultraviolet light, military ultra low fre;uency <+-2= and others.

#. Ty$es of Electroma!netic Waves >isi le !aves " >isi le light is the type of electromagnetic radiation that the human eye can detect. Different colors of light are simply different wavelengths and fre;uencies. &ed light has a longer wavelength, lower fre;uency, and less energy than lue light. *he visi le light spectrum in order of decreasing wavelength is9 red, orange, yellow, green, lue, indigo, and violet. &emem er &oy?)iv. &adio !aves " &adio waves have the longest wavelengths, and lowest fre;uencies of any type of electromagnetic radiation. Different fre;uencies of radio waves are used for different types of communication, including radio, television and cell phone. #very

television station or radio station has a separate fre;uency of radio waves which they roadcast from. ,icrowaves " ,icrowaves are ne%t on the electromagnetic spectrum, ranging from ..7"3@ ?($. ,icrowaves still have a relatively long wavelength, making them less energetic than other types of waves. *hough microwaves have low energy, they are easily a sor ed y water, allowing them to efficiently heat up food and drinks. ,icrowaves which heat up food operate at 04A@ ,($. &adar "uses fre;uencies within the microwave range, ut has a completely different application. &adar, which is short for Bradio detection and ranging,B works y sending out a microwave from an antennae and tracking it as it ounces off of o jects or surfaces. )y measuring aspects of the returning wave, properties of the surface or o ject it ounced off of are determined. +ltraviolet radiation : more known as +> rays are a component of sunlight. *hese rays are energetic enough to harm iological materials, and range from C.A % .@D.4 " 3 % .@D.7 ($. 1vere%posure to +> rays leads to sun urn in the short term, and contri utes to skin cancer risks over time. +> e%posure may also lead to cataracts and premature wrinkling of the skin.

8"rays " ranging from 3 % .@D.7 ($ and up, are commonly used in small amounts for medical purposes. 8"ray usefulness comes from its a ility to penetrate materials that visi le light can not go through. 2or e%ample, 8"rays are a le to penetrate skin and soft tissue organs, revealing the ones of the skeletal system underneath. 2re;uent e%posure to 8"rays increases the risk of cancer, as 8"rays are relatively high energy radiation.

?amma rays " the highest energy form of radiation, having short wavelengths and high fre;uencies. &anging from .@D0@ ($ and a ove, gamma rays are produced y stars, including our sun. Some

unsta le atomic nuclei on earth also give off gamma rays, which are highly damaging to human tissues.

&esources9 II. %ses of Radio Waves A. How Radiation is used in #ellular &hones ,illions of people in the +nited States and around the world use cellular phones. *hese days, cell phones provide an incredi le array of functions, and new ones are eing added at a reakneck pace. Depending on the cell"phone model, you can store information such as contacts, make to"do list or reminders, communicate in farther areas in the community around the glo e, capture pictures, play games and access to the internet. Cellular phones were also een used to pass files, thus sometimes it uses infrared and luetooth. In calling we used different radio waves depending on the ;uality of the call the most fre;uently used is radio fre;uency. !henever a cell phone attempts to make a call it sends out a signal from its antenna which is sent to the ase station of the receiving cell phone. In turn, the ase station assigns the phones on an unoccupied radio fre;uency channel. 1ur voice data and are simultaneously received and emitted, thus ena ling communication etween phones. *he call is then sent to a switching center, in order to e sent to a different cell phone. *his is how cell phones use radio waves in order to allow us to communicate. ). (ow Computers uses &adiation

III. Effects of the eEectroma!netic Waves in the Human Body A. Brain Tumor *he people who often use cellphones are more prone in developing tumors than those who donEt. *he more people who are e%pose have more tendency in having it. F*his conclusion has een disputed y many scientists. )ut careful analysis of the est studies to date indicate that people who log the most cell"phone minutes are more likely to develop tumors on the same side of the head that they hold the cell phone, compared with those who use cell phones less often.G " ,agda (avas, /hD

B. 'ym$hatic #ancer and Bone (arrow #ancer /eople who were living near a high power voltage line has greater chance of getting lymphatic cancer and one marrow cancer according to +niversity of *asmania and +niversity in )ristol. #. (iscarria!e *he electromagnetic waves can damage the cellular structure of an em ryo. *he develpoing em ryo are more vulnera le in developing structural defects. *heir skulls, their tissues and their rain are not fully. A pregnant woman should avoid e%posure from the

electromagnetic fields. /regnant woman are at risk of miscarriage if they are e%posed to high electromagnetic intensity during pregnancy.

". Asthma According to the research that was held at California, during pregnancy childEs tendency of getting asthma due to magnetic fields could have a greater possi ility than the others who were not e%posed.

E. #ataract *he effects of too much e%posure to electromagnetic radiation can lead to cataract. *he clouding around the eyes that can cause permanent lindness.

). "*A "ama!e According to ?erman &esearch ?roup of >erum eing too much e%posed to cellular phone fre;uencies could damage human and animal cells. It showed that after the e%posure to the radio fre;uency the DNA had some reaks that couldnEt e repaired y cells again. *hese could e pass to other cells and lead to cancer.
