A reection upon the rst semester of Graphic Design thesis at UIC. Jackson Hill
Full year courses such as the one in question require a bit of looking backward to make sure nothing gets lost or forgotten. Through the process of the rst project, Work Harder, Play Harder, I found myself looking at work, both design and other wise, in a different light. This new angle is exposed visually in Unknown, the three part zine series that comprised the second project. After blending the lines between work and recreation, I was able to look at the content, layout method and ner detail in a
way previously foreign to me. Looking deeper into the details of why and how we work on projects that we judge with a certain level of signicance shifted my scope from the small victories to the larger picture. Now rather than digging into the dirt searching for eeting specks of accomplishment I attempt to sprint forward into the unknown and brilliant darkness. I realize all of that sounds like a whole lot of bullshit but bear with me because I think I actually learned something this time.
Work Harder, Play Harder was a project intended to take a look at the work and effort people put into things they deem important in their lives, striving to further dene the difference between work and play. If your lifes toil brings you pleasure, was it really work, or your form of recreation? Is there really that signicant of a difference? These were the questions that the work sought to answer, and it failed on several levels. The success, however, was the fundamental shift in my own perspective.
I discovered that I would much rather see hard work and inconsequential recreation as an intertwined duo that cannot exist without the other. A pinnacle example that was realized in the proces of the book was that of the singer/songwriter if someone of this profession does nothing but write songs, what have they to sing about? After completing this project I decided to push myself to let a little fun slide into my work, and to keep my greater goals omni present while fucking off and having fun.

Take a look at some of the elements and layouts from the rst book and youll see what Im getting at when I say that working too hard is a denite and disasterous possiblitiy. Do you see all of those god damn spreadsheets? Why is that interesting? Why go through the trouble of ensuring perfect punctual accuracy on each one? You get the general idea after like, four, ve tops. All fucking fty two? Its like Im working to show how much work goes into work like this, work work work work.
Fuck that. Fuck work for works sake. Thats what I pulled out of the bookif youre not working for the fun of it, the works not going to be very fun, and if youre not in love with what youre doing no one else will be. Im not saying I think the project is complete garbage, but Ive denitely identied a train of thought that I dont want to be riding for the rest of my life. Boring, mind-numbing labor, no matter how maticulous and prestine, amounts to a tedious process and a lackluster nal product.

Yeah, I guess. I mean kinda. This is about where Im at right now. Unknown did a pretty good job at showing me that theres a lot more to making fun work than just say ing youre going to. I feel like I did manage to loosen up a little, in sections. I tried to let myself get caught up in details, and avoid a constant anxious state of worrying about the overlying theme and grid. Of course those are still important, and Im sitting here right now thinking that I shouldve given them more thought, but
really, its a process. Im trying to move towards a different way of looking at design, so I guess it only makes sense that Im gonna be a bit shit at it at rst. No hard feelings. Its hard to stay invested, to consistently care through the whole process. But its a good challenge, one that I feel comfortable, haha, working on. Because its all still work, something is still being accomplished, be it an individual spread, a book, a series, or life itself. This reection stuff is making me get all real right now, shit.
Unknown was a weird piece to work on and a weirder one to try and reect upon. The zine was a group project, and personally my work started with putting together a grid system for the group to use. We felt it was important to maintain consistency and all that, and a systemic-from-the-getgo style approach gelled well with me, so away we went. Our inuences included classic editorial styles and comic book block style layouts, so I tried to keep both of those in mind while I made mock ups. It was my
personal goal to establish a working structure that was rigid enough to be reliable but exible enough to be playful. Since I was trying to shake things up a little in regards to the work and the effort, I thought a system that didnt require a whole lot of maintenence would be ideal, but on the other hand I wanted one that gave us a bit of freedom. What I really learned here is that you always have that freedomjust cant be afraid to bend the gridlines a bit. It felt good to say that. Am I having fun yet?
Content decisions were, of course, a group effort. My methodology behind the editting was an admittedly very sloppy and vague system, but like I said, process. I wanted to constantly verify that the things that were going into the zine were, of course, on topic and relevant to the the points we were trying to make. However, because of my decision to live a little that stemmed from the rst project, I didnt want to hesitate to dive into ideas that seemed fun or interesting based on a simple rst impres-
sion that they werent exactly what we were looking for. In my Marilyn Manson spreads that appear in the rst issue of our zine, a topic is chosen that slightly varies from the point the booklet is trying to make. I do think that by exploring that content, I came across some connections that were less than apparent originally, but wasnt able to express them strongly enough to be completely successful. Its the idea of having a little fun, but being able to tone it back in with hard work. See, connections.

A few steps into the project, I decided that foldable frogs embodied what fun meant to me, and ran with it. I think the outcome of these is pretty bland, but the idea behind it was neato and I let myself play around a little. I mean like, whatever, it works I guess, but the exciting part for me was that it was a novel idea that I could sink my teeth into and run with. The section was made up of a few split-image spreads that, when folded properly, revealed a cute little frog or tree monkey or something. Is it a super unique concept? No, nor is it mindblowingly contextualized or anything like that, but it was fun, and thats what I was going for. I tried to forget about the grid and the guides and all that for a second and just think of something neat to put in a magazine. Thats where these projects are pushing me, to work outside of the page and think about the stuff that I want to say more than about how I want to say it. I rewrote that a few times cause I didnt like how it read. Oh well.

I dont really know man. Guess well see where it goes from here. I havent really laid a solid conceptual framework for what my thesis is going to be, but I think thats okay. Figuring out what I want to talk about is going to be the most important part, remember? Second only to trying to focus on what Ive learned about design, and what it takes to make my process successful. Because that shits gonna last me like, forever. I really do think its important to have a grasp on how Im approaching the eld as a whole, and how that translates to each individual project. Id rather know why what Im churning out is terrible than operate under a veil of oblivious mediocrity. So thats the ticket I guessbe mindful of the work Im doing, but keep it loose. I feel like Im at the end of a movie and Im writing one of those bullshit letters about what I learned at summer camp or some shit. But the movies not over, which is a laughably more cliche line to end on. Oh well, fuck you.
