STELLERS SEA LIONS

I am writing a report on the Stellers sea lion. The stellers sea lion is endangered and is almost extinct and there are only 85,000 left in existence. The sea lions are hunted for their meat and for their blubber. Each year about 400 are killed for their meat and their blubber. In the 1980 there where 290,000 and now there are only 85,000. They also get stuck in fishing nets. Sea lions are pail golden brown. Their blubber helps them float in water. The males are 3.3m and weigh about 1,000 kg. The females are 2.5 m and weigh less then 300 kg. The sea lions biome or where you will find them is the ocean. A sea lion is a mammal so when its in the water they need to come to the surface so they can breath. You will find a sea lion throughout the north pacific. Sea lions eat squid, fish, shellfish, and Octopus. They live in a pack and stick together. There are 7 types of sea lions: 1. The California sea lion, 2. The Steller sea lion thats the one Im doing, 3. The Australian sea lion, 4 the Galapagos sea lion 5, The New Zealand sea lion, 6. The South American sea lion, and 7. the Japanese sea lion. The steller sea lion is one of the biggest sea lions. Sea lions are social animals. The males are really aggressive and can get really mean and can actually kill people if they get really mad at them. The Steller sea lion became endangered in 1997. The sea lion are endangered because

of humans not naturally. Sea lions do not lay eggs they are mammals so the give birth. When they give birth to them they some times get crushed and destroyed by other males because they have to get to shore to go in the water and they some times the crush other new born sea lions. The average life span for a male steller sea lion is 18 years. The average life span for a female is 30 years. The Marine Mammal Protection Act, which was enacted on October 1, 1972, protects the sea lions. This act forbids the killing, harming, or harassing of any marine mammal. The steller sea lions breeding season is from mid-May to mid-July. The pup is 35-50 pounds. Sea lion and seal look exactly the same. They both have flippers at the end of there of there limbs to help them swim, they both have thick layers of blubber to keep them warm in the cold ocean, and they both eat a lot of fish. But there is one deference their ears. If you see earflaps on its ears it is a sea lion. But if you just sea a little opening its a seal. I really liked researching the Steller sea lion they are really cute it was awesome.
