Born in the small town of Semans, Saskatchewan in April 1927, Norma, one of twin girls, had a Scottish mother and an Irish father. A great combination she says. The familys store where Norma spent much time was sold in the 1960s and the family moved to a farm in Quebec. Though she worked in a hospital for some time, Norma felt her future lay in teaching. At age 40, she enrolled in Teachers College in Ottawa and her graduation marked the start of a 20-year career as a grade 5 teacher in schools in the Shawville, Quebec area. Norma had her own particular way of disciplining children - and adults too, for that matter. An example: when she was working in the store a male customer had the habit of sneaking chewing tobacco from a can near the front counter without paying. Norma had a solution for that: she put a dead rat in the can. There was no more pilfering! Norma was happily married to Nellis Stewart for 59 years. In their retirement they spent 13 winters in Daytona, Florida. She has two daughters who live in Almonte and Toronto and is proud of her 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She took up residence at Waterside in September 2013.
