PURPLE RAIN
Om Swastiastu... February in Bali means that the weather is still fairly unpredictable one day it might be sunny and the next day there might be a torrential downpour, or you might nd both of those things happening within the span of two hours. But as youll see in this months FOTOFOLIO, it is business as usual here on the island despite the erratic weather, so take your cue from the photos and dont let the rain get you down! Weve researched some unique indoor activities for you and your family in

Relaxing sound of raindrops against the rooftop, anyone? And this being the month of love, weve pondered the meaning of romance in PONDERING POINT and compiled a number of special menus and programs that are being offered around the island (and Jakarta) throughout February and specically on Valentines Day. So ip through the pages of this edition to learn more about them you might just come across one that sounds perfectly suited for you and your beloved. We hope you enjoy February! Stay positive, stay dry, and before you go, repeat after us (sung to the tune of the popular childrens song): Rain, rain, you can stay. I dont mind you anyway. Im in Bali, I can play. Rain or shine, its my holiday.

A COLORFUL COMMUNITY
OUR CONTRIBUTOR EXPLORES THE MOUNTAINOUS AREA OF SIDEMEN IN EAST BALI, WHICH HAS A LONG HISTORY OF MUSLIMS LIVING HARMONIOUSLY WITH THE HINDU POPULATION.

id you know that there are a number of Muslim communities scattered around Bali? The island is

primarily Hindu, but Muslim villages can be found along the coastal areas of Singaraja, Gilimanuk, Karangasem and Jimbaran. However, it is quite rare to nd them in the mountainous areas.

SIDEMEN VILLAGE
Enter Sidemen (pronounced: Seede-mun), a small and peaceful village on the slope of the mighty Mount Agung. A secret retreat since

the 1930s, its been used as a hideaway for countless dignitaries and even the legendary painter Walter Spies. A small Muslim community resides there, deep in Balis interior and very far from the coast. We have been here for centuries. The king brought us here, said one of the elders to me during my rst visit to the area. The fact that a local Hindu king had brought the rst Muslims to the area was a fragment of history that I found really interesting, so I embarked on a second journey to dig deeper into this story.

THE BEGINNINGS
It turns out that in ancient times, kings and their kingdoms often competed against each other and Bali was no exception. The king of Karangasem, who once ruled the western part of the Muslim-populated island of Lombok, had brought some of the indigenous Sasak people (called iringan) and stationed them in Sidemen. These Sasak people were known to possess magical powers, so they might have been employed as a kind of spy that was highly trusted by the king. As the story goes, the king and the Sidemen royal family were so

grateful for the iringans services that they kindly granted them a plot of land. The Tabola hamlet was the rst place inhabited by the rst eight Lombok Sasaks. Eventually one of them relocated to Bedugul and became the rst Muslim to settle in that area, and consequently

junction coming from the coast you will see a small mosque, and then youve reached your destination. This small mosque is actually the rst place of worship built in the area for the Muslim community. In the beginning there were twelve Muslim families living in Tabola. The local griya (the palace of the Hindu high caste Brahmin) who owned the land grew to love these families and decided to give them a piece of land to build the mosque. Now those twelve families have grown to two hundred families

Bedugul now has a sizeable Muslim community too.

the archipelago like Silungkang or Palembang. You can nd songket weavers and workshops pretty easily in Sidemen. In Tabola for example, there is one weaver named Ibu Ayu whose workshop is right by the road. You can see rsthand how labor-intensive the process is to produce just one piece. Sidemens songkets are not produced solely by the indigenous Hindu population; the Muslim community also takes part, proving there is no need for exclusivity when it comes to preserving this unique cultural heritage. SIDEMEN SONGKET
In addition to its breathtaking scenery and the warm and welcoming residents, Sidemen is also known for its songket one of Indonesias most well known textiles after batik. Made by weaving homemade and naturally colored yarn, songket from Sidemen possess more exquisite and delicate characteristics compared to other Balinese woven cloths such as endek. However, Sidemen songket has not gained as much popularity as the songket from other parts of

EVENING SHOW
Devdan: Treasure of the Archipelago is a captivating 90-minute performance that combines storytelling with Indonesian dance and stunning aerial acrobatics. Its a perfect way to stay dry indoors while getting a glimpse of the vast array of culture that dots the Indonesian landscape. The performance begins with two children who stray from their tour group in Bali and stumble upon a treasure chest full of iconic objects from around the Indonesian archipelago. As they pick up each object, they are magically transported to the source and greeted warmly by the locals. The children are introduced to the traditional dances, music, day-to-day activities and legends that are specic to each region, from Bali to Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Papua. Each scene features vibrant costumes and energetic choreography; it is a fairly fast paced show, so we nd it hard to imagine your childrens attention will wane at any point. And there are actually a handful of short acts

and rather emotional opening score. The Devdan show starts at 7 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. There are several ticket categories, starting from US$ 55 (US$ 32 for children) all the way up to US$ 120 for VIP (includes leather lazy-boy seating and return transport from your hotel to the Bali Nusa Dua Theatre). in between the main scenes geared specically towards the little ones; they can be a tad on the silly side, but once you hear the giggles echoing in the audience youll understand exactly why they are there. Our personal favorite part of the show is the Saman dance from Sumatra (all dances have been modied slightly while staying faithful to their roots) and the grand

Chef Kevins freestyle Tapas dishes, based on the nest seasonal local ingredients, are sublime mouthfuls of balanced texture, color and avor. Not being a fan of leafy and bland varieties of salads, hes made sure the ones at Cuca are anything but. Inspired by Greek stab and bite salads they are served slightly warmed, exploding with intoxicating avors and crunchy goodness.

The ones I sampled, Honey Baked Pumpkin Salad with creamy yoghurt, wing bean, coconut muesli and tarragon, and the Glazed Young Carrot Salad, drenched in zingy lemon balm with mountain strawberries and cashew nuts, I could eat all day, every day. The same goes for the Crispy Fried Chicken, assembled with wild organic honey, coleslaw, sesame dust and Asian basil, and the Smoked Sablesh with its sensuous

Im no fan of octopus (it can be like chewing on latex), but Cucas BBQ Octopus tastes dead tender, grilled to burnt smokiness and delicately enhanced with caramelized coriander. Kevins obsession with gourmet sausages led him to craft his own, inspired by Spanish chicha traditions of coarsely chopped, richly seasoned re-roasted premium meats. The Cinnamon Smoked Wagyu Beef Chicha comes served as rustic-style slabs suspended over shaved cabbage and young zucchini. I remarked to Chef Kevin that Cucas tapas seem to be on another stratosphere compared to Balis usual suspects, to which he reminded me that Cuca emulates the great authentic tapas found in Barcelona.

PRIME CUTS
WE TALK BEEF WITH BEN BLACKMORE OF BLACKMORE WAGYU BEEF, WHICH IS PROUDLY SERVED AT SOME OF THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN JAKARTA AND BALI.

BB: And what is Kobe beef? BBM: The Kobe Beef brand uses the Wagyu breed of animal to produce its famous beef. Authentic Kobe Beef only comes from the Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. BB: At a dinner last year, we couldnt help but marvel at the marbling of your beef. Could you explain to our readers what marbling is? BBM: Marbling in Wagyu is intra-muscular fat deposits within the muscle that adds unparalleled tenderness and avor to the beef. The Wagyu breed is totally unique, as the marbling is a mono-

Bali & Beyond (BB): Tell us a little bit about what it was like for you to grow up on a Wagyu farm? Ben Blackmore (BBM): Growing up on a Wagyu farm in Australia was fantastic. Dad rst started with Wagyu when I was 7 years old in 1988, he was one of the rst to introduce the Wagyu breed to Australia. As Wagyu became more popular I certainly had more friends wanting to be invited to our family BBQs to eat our Wagyu! BB: What is the difference between Wagyu beef and other kinds of beef? BBM: Wagyu is a breed of cow that is native to Japan. Wagyu have been genetically blessed with high levels of intra-muscular fat within their muscles.

unsaturated fat that is good for you. No other beef breed has this type of healthy fat. BB: Wagyu beef is typically viewed as a luxury good. May we ask how much it usually goes for per kilo? BBM: There are many different grades and types of Wagyu. We produce 100% Fullblood Wagyu with the highest Australian marble score of 9+. Our premium loin cuts in restaurants range from AU$ 500/

and sustainability. All of our animals have been removed from a feedlot environment and are raised naturally. Our animals are raised on their mothers for the rst 9-12 months, and then the animals are fed our secret feed ration for 650 days. We have 25 animals in 5 acre paddocks grazing on pasture and laying under gum trees. Our secret feed ration is fully sustainable with natural feed commodities that are not suitable for human consumption. Our objective is to feed our animals naturally produced by-products. BB: Weve been hearing rave BB: Tell us briey about blood lines and the genetics of Wagyu. BBM: 100% Fullblood Wagyu is the authentic Wagyu produced in Japan. Both mother and father are 100% Wagyu genetics (Blackmore Wagyu is 100% Fullblood Wagyu). Many other Wagyu breeders produce Crossbred Wagyu, this is Wagyu that has been crossed with another breed of cow and often produces a lesser quality product that is at a more affordable price. BB: Can a nose print really be used to identify a cow the way nger prints are used to identify humans? BBM: Yes, absolutely! Traditionally in Japan they used nose prints to identify each animal. Each animals nose print is different, just like our ngerprints. We now use DNA to identify each animals genetics. BB: Any hints on whats going down business-wise in Bali in 2014? BBM: We will continue to develop our product within the Bali market and hope to have 4-5 new venues BB: And how about Bali? Where can beef connoisseurs get a sample of Blackmore Wagyu? BBM: At this stage the best venues to get our product are Alila Villas Soori and Teatro. We are a very small boutique producer; we only have 55 animals per month available and we currently export this product to 14 countries. reviews about the Wood Fire Grilled Strip Loin at the Potato Head Garage in Jakarta. BBM: Yes, the Potato Head Garage is the only restaurant in Jakarta using our strip loin. BB: Lastly, tell us some of your favorite places in Bali to visit during your leisure time! BBM: Potato Head Beach Club is a world class venue to swim and sunbake with a cocktail. At Alila Villas Soori, Chef Dwayne Cheer has an amazing menu that is continually changing to use local ingredients with the most beautiful and tranquil beachside restaurant. The Alila spa is also a pretty amazing way to spend an afternoon and well worth a visit to Tabanan. And dinner at Mejekawi is absolutely amazing; Chef Ben Cross is producing some spectacular food. DESPITE HAVING A VERY BUSY SCHEDULE LAST YEAR, THE WESTIN RESORT IN NUSA DUA MANAGED TO COMPLETE ITS REFURBISHMENT AS WELL AS TO ADD MORE FACILITIES INCLUDING THE BRAND NEW HEAVENLY SPA BY WESTIN, WHICH WAS DESIGNED WITH BALIS OWN TALE OF ROMEO & JULIET IN MIND.

Legend has it that Jayaprana, who had been adopted as a young boy by a Balinese king, fell in love with a beautiful ower seller named Layonsari. He wished to wed her, but when the king met Layonsari he became so enamored with her that he secretly ordered a guard to kill Jayaprana. The guard failed several times to kill Jayaprana, so nally confessed that he was carrying out

It is said that when they both died, a beautiful oral scent spread throughout the forest and the coral reef changes colors around the area where they are buried.

The Heavenly Spa by Westin has incorporated elements of this story into their design, creating a dreamy atmosphere that makes you feel like you have been transported to ancient Bali and into the legend itself.

Walking through the dimly lit hallways, the sheer, oral curtains hang down on both sides and up above you, making it feel as if you are being enveloped by the oral scent that permeated the kingdom following Jayaprana and Layonsaris tragic deaths. The earthy color scheme and other representations of nature, from the curved paneling on doors and walls that resemble owing water to the leaves that seem to be blowing across the walls, add to the surreal feeling of being in the forest where Jayaprana and Layonsari once tread.

PLUSH, PLUSH, PLUSH

The Westin Heavenly Bed has a name that is really self-explanatory. This bed is truly and utterly divine. The resorts signature bed was rst introduced worldwide in 1999 and features a 10 layer set, however, at The Westin Nusa Dua, the resort offers an eight-layer tropical version that is no less comfortable. The eight layers are comprised of a custom-designed soft pillow-top mattress set, a mattress pad, two crisp 250thread count cotton sheets, a uffy duvet and duvet cover and ve down-feather pillows for a very special slumber experience. We wager you wont want to get out once youre in. www.westinnusaduabali.com

CONTEMPORARY CHIC
If modernity is what you desire, then you should go no further than the Le Mridien Jimbaran. STATELY LUXURY
Indulgingly luxurious is the term that best describes The Mulia Balis uber-comfortable beds. The bedding is made 100% from the nest cotton and ranges from 400 to 1,000 thread count, the pillows are amply lled with hypoallergenic down feathers and the mattresses are more-than-ordinary sized. The Mulias beds are easily qualied as top category when it comes to comfort and being stately. The thick and soft pillows are a most pleasant feature if you enjoy watching TV while lying on the bed you wont need to pile up the pillows to comfortably position your head to face the screen. www.themulia.com

SUNSET IN BED
There are many places where you can enjoy Balis memorable sunsets by the beach. But nothing beats viewing the beautiful pink sky and sparkling azure waters with your beloved from a big canopied bed with silky smooth 300 thread count sheets and plush down feather pillows. Where can you do this you might ask? That would be at The Legians Sunset Suite, which sits on the very top oor of the resort, lending you an unhindered view of the glittering ocean. One might even go as far to say that the bed is the most romantic in Seminyak.www.ghmhotels.com

During the wet season, the temperature in the area can get quite low, so huddle up if you need more warmth! Another option is to jump into the huge Jacuzzi bathtub for swirling hot water. PONDERINGPOINT

MATTERS OF THE HEART

IS A FINE ROMANCE SIMILAR TO A FINE WINE? AS IN, DOES ROMANCE GET BETTER WITH TIME?

was sitting at my dining room table the other day, staring intently at my laptop screen while attempting to scour the Internet for posts related

to love and romance. It was raining heavily outside and thunder crashed loudly, breaking the calm every few seconds. I admit it was not the preferred love, but it seemed an appropriate prelude to the quote that I suddenly stumbled upon. The anonymous author offered an intriguing metaphor for love, which went something like this:

atmosphere for thinking about

48

BALI&BEYOND FEBRUARY 2014

Love is when you are on one side of a canyon and your lover is on the other. You wave to each other across the divide. You have a parachute. Your lover has a parachute. But the cords to open the parachutes are on the back, not the front, so only your lover can open your parachute for you, and you for your lover. You pause. Are you ready to jump? Will your lover jump too? If you and your lover jump simultaneously, grasp mid-air and yank each others cords, youll glide together sweetly to a getaway island where a candlelight dinner awaits. If one thing goes wrong a glitch in timing, a puff of wind, the slightest hesitation youll be crushed on the rocks below. My reaction upon reading this was, What the? It was the most terrifying denition of love that I had ever heard. Im not sure what had happened to the author, but Im pretty sure that he had been through some pretty challenging romantic situations. Or maybe he was a parasailing athlete (or perhaps it was both). In any case it was far from the denition that I had developed, based on my experiences.

TIME WILL TELL

When it comes to long-term partnerships or married life, romance is denitely no longer dened by owers, chocolate or love letters. There might still be some fancy gifts here and there, but those

WHAT IS LOVE?
My very rst denition of romance was not passed down to me from my parents. They were relatively conservative Balinese parents who believed that romantic gestures in front of the kids was a big no-no, as children often mimic those around them without knowing the meaning. This is why my rst introduction to the idea of romance came from a Snow White book that my aunt bought for me. And so I came to believe that romance was equal to a kiss. When I become a teenager, my denition of romance evolved from a kiss to the exchange of owers, chocolates, fancy gifts and love letters. These days, I believe that everyone has their own unique understanding of the word romance. And Ive come to the conclusion that it may take an entire lifetime for someone to be able to dene what romance means to him or her.

are most likely not what we deem to be truly special. For those of you who are currently in a long-term partnership, how would you dene romance? How does it feel and when was the last time you felt this so-called romance? Is it true that a ne romance is similar to a ne wine? Does it really get better with time? The more you think about these questions the more confused and perhaps even overwhelmed you might become. But let me give a hint to help you answer all these questions at once. Simply look at your partner, who might be sitting across the room at this moment or by your side, and think about the entire journey that you two have been through together. There you will nd your answer. By Bayu Rahanatha

FOR THE EXOTIC

Theres a new kid on the block called Ah Yat Abalone Seafood Restaurant, which has become another great option for Chinese food in Bali. Located at Rimba (one of the latest hotels in the Jimbaran area), it is a branch of the legendary Ah Yat Abalone Restaurant in Beijing and offers exotic menu items that are usually only found in Mainland China. Try their signature abalone often described as a cross between scallops and foie gras that is imported from countries like Japan, Mexico and South Africa. This abalone is cooked in a variety of styles, such as steamed, fried or put in a soup. You can also place an order for their beautiful Birds Nest

dishes that are believed to have health benets like strengthening the immune system and aiding in the digestive processes. If you are not really an adventurous eater, Ah Yat Abalone also has traditional Chinese delicacies like dim sum and Hong Kong-style live seafood. In addition, the restaurant offers an all-you-caneat Yum Cha at lunchtime from Monday to Saturday at a price of Rp. 168,000++/person, featuring an extensive choice of delicious steamed and fried dumplings, toxia long bao, buns, egg tarts and hakaw that really appeals to everyones palate. Go ahead and bring a big group the restaurant can handle up to 300 guests at a time.

Order a bowl of their minced beef and egg congee, a couple crispy cakwe (Chinese crullers that come sliced) and a portion of their century egg. Century egg is not for everyone (and not so pleasing to the eyes), but its worth a try because of how it perfectly complements the congee, adding tanginess from being immersed in sesame oil. explained Tama, a parkour instructor there. I asked Tama the difference between parkour and freerunning, thinking there might be some sort of rivalry there. But apparently they used to be one and the same. Freerunning was a term that a British journalist coined simply to overcome the French language barrier. However, nowadays freerunning has become slightly different, adapting fancier moves like front and back ips, while parkour keeps it simple and focuses on overcoming urban obstacles. Obstacles this is something that most of us avoid, but it is exactly

what parkour folks look for. In fact, obstacles are the ingredients for fun! While ordinary people see a waist-high brick wall as a roadblock, parkour enthusiasts see it as a thing to jump on, do a kong leap over, or even somersault over. This sport has made room for everyone to express themselves, said Tama. Everybody has a different level of body strength and ability, therefore everyone has their own distinctive style and approach when facing, say, a one-and-a-half meter tall brick wall. Physical tness is paramount for this activity. Thats why at 3V

they have a strict warm up session for everyone taking the course, ranging from squats to pull ups and everything in between. It is crucial that these warm ups are done rigorously prior to each session, since this activity requires your body to undergo serious exertion. There are explosive jumps, impact suppressions and suspensions that test both the joint and the long limb muscles. If you fancy a walk under the shadow of Mount Rinjani, then this is a great place to base yourself for a couple of days. Mount Rinjani, the second highest mountain in Indonesia (sitting at 3,726 meters), is a serious climb

and you can start your trek from Sembalun Lawang. For those who wish to engage in a softer adventure option, day-long hikes still offer a chance to explore the area without the big climb to the summit. The Rinjani Information Center provides you with all the information you need on short walk options. A popular day hike is the lovely fourhour guided village tour including a wildower walk, which is a great way to start your orientation of this beautiful region.

VILLAGE LIFE
Culture abounds in North Lombok, and you can stop at two interesting traditional villages for an up close and personal look. The Segenter traditional village is a Sasak village that keeps a strong Muslim faith. There are 117 families living together in traditional houses and they welcome guests eagerly. This village sustains itself by growing tapioca, corn, spinach, peanuts and soy beans, and they produce one harvest of rice a year.

MOUNT RINJANI CLIMB Trekking season is April to October. Check with the Rinjani Information Center (RIC) rst. Due to landslides, the trail is closed during the wet season from November to March. RIC Sembalun Lawang: (0878) 6334-4119 THE SUMMIT CLIMB: TWO OPTIONS The most popular route is the 5-day trek starting at Senaru and nishing at Sembalun Lawang. Sembalun is the second option this is a 2-day return trek that is very steep and quite grueling. Tips: It is mandatory to take a guide. Registration is at either RIC in Senaru or RIC in Sembalun. It is advisable to take a porter. Guides will only carry a light daypack, so one or two porters are needed to carry your food and supplies.

The local people, known as Wetu Tulu, combine three elements in their faith Islamic practice, ancestral worship and to a lesser degree, animism. They seem to like to do things in threes, praying three times a day (instead of ve) and embracing the ideal of the Holy Trinity: the sun, the moon and the stars, which are representations of heaven, earth and water. The other Wetu Telu village you can visit is the Senaru traditional village, which has 20 families living

For Bali Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace uids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
