Introduction:Individualswhoexerciseregularlyarefamiliarwiththe
needforpostworkouttimetorecoverfromthefatigueofeffortaswell asthepainordiscomfortassociatedwitharigorousworkout.During thistimeofrecovery,thebodyisactivelywashingoutthebuildupof wasteproductsfromcellularrespirationaswellasrepairing microscopicmuscletearscausedbytheexertion.Thewiseathlete knowsthattomorrowsworkoutisonlyasgoodastodaysrecovery, buttimespentrecoveringistimethatisnotspenttraining.Thus, athleteslookingforanedgeinextremelycompetitivesportsoftengo withoutadequatepostworkoutrecoverytime(PWOR). Lacticacidisacommonmetabolicwasteproductgeneratedduring intensemuscleactivityandfrequentlythecauseofthediscomfort experiencedafterworkout.(Anacidisdefinedasacompoundthat donatesaproton(H+,orhydrogenion)toasystem.)Activatedzeolite suspension(AZS)isarelativelynewclassofnutritionalsupplement designedtoaidthebodyinexcretionoftoxins,particularlyheavymetal ionswithapositivecharge(cations).Throughthismechanism,AZSalso helpsbalancethepHofbodyfluids. Theothermajorcauseofpostworkoutmusclepain,musclefiber damage,isrepairedovertimethroughcomplexcellularmechanisms. Methods:Thepurposeofthisstudywastodetermineif
supplementationwithAZScouldreducethetimeneededtorecover afteraworkoutbyeliminatingthesecontributoryions.Tothisend, questionnairesweresentto500volunteerathletes,including250 individualswhoidentifiedthemselvesascompetitiveand250who wererecreationalparticipants.Eachathletereceiveda30daysupply ofNaturalCellularDefenseanda30dayjournal.

Volunteerswereaskedtoevaluatetheeffectofthesupplementon athleticperformance,PWORtimeandperceivedpaindaily.After30 days,theformsandjournalswerereturnedandevaluated. The357respondentsweregroupedbysport(powerlifting/ bodybuilding,runningandbicycling)andthenbycompetitionlevel (competitivevs.recreational).Throughthequestionnaire,wesoughtto determineimprovementinperceivedpainandreductioninPWOR time,ratedas:nochange,minorreduction,moderatereduction,and significantreduction.Wealsosoughttoidentifyanyimprovementin athleticperformance,ratedas:noimprovement,minorimprovement, moderateimprovement,andsignificantimprovement. Aftercatalogingtheresponsesofeachparticipant,datawereanalyzed andevaluated.
Results:Participantsinallsportsatalllevelsreportedimprovements
inbothperceivedpainandPWORtime.82.8%ofcompetitiveathletes reportedmoderatetosignificantreductioninPWORtimeand perceivedpainwhile47%reportedanimprovementinathletic performance.76.5%ofallrecreationalparticipantsreportedsignificant improvementwhile85%ofrecreationalbicyclistsreporteda performanceboost.70%ofrecreationalrunnersgotmoderateto significantreductioninPWORtime.
Conclusion:WeproposethatAZSisdirectlyactingonthemuscular
microenvironmenttoreducethepresenceofbothhydrogenandheavy metalionsthatareresponsibleforthediscomfortexperienced followingarigorousworkout.ThepHregulationoccurswhenAZS sequestersthishydrogenionandeitherredistributesitorfacilitates excretionviathekidneys.Further,theAZSisalsotheretoscavengeany strayheavymetalionsthatmightreducetheabilitytoconductcellular andmuscularrepair.
