NEW ZEALAND BLAZED: RECTIFYING ELECTRICAL FIRES

INTRODUCTION

Electricity is one of the most important resource we relies in the modern age, it is a part of the necessity of our daily living. However, misuse of appliances or instabilities of power network can cause huge damage to one's personal and property safety. Saviour switch is a device that can protect and prevent any electrical fires by controlling electricity usage and take immediate action in emergencies. You will no longer worry about the TV you forgot to switch off when you are not at home.
3.BUSINESS SECTION 3.1 Vision

Our goal is to protect personal and property safety by preventing potential electrical fires and make electrical appliances safe to use at Anywhere, Anytime and by Anyone.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Fire prevention Industry

Industry: Fire prevention industry

Force:

High/Low:

Justification:

Buyer power:

Low

Buyer power in the industry is low. There are only a few options for customers to choose from, such as the Fire Preventors (Fire Preventors Limited, n.d.) Because the options for buyer are limited, the buyer's power is therefore low.

Supplier power:

Low

Even though the product in the fire prevention industry could involve high technology, however
2

the material required are not hard to purchase and there are many raw material providers on the market so the supplier power is low in the industry

Threat of new entrants:

Low

The threat of new entrant is low because a high level of standard quality must be met in New Zealand in order to sell the product on the market. The technology involved in product preventing fires required a big amount of capital investment, this builds an entrant barrier in the industry

Threat of substitutes:

Low

Threat if substitutes are lowest in the industry because there are nothing that can prevent fires and deny fires that is outside the industry. An item such as a fire extinguisher can put out a fire, however, it cannot prevent any potential threat of fires

Rivalry among existing High competitors:

Because there are only a few companies in the industry and each company have a big amount of market share, the competition between

competitors are high.

Overall attractiveness of the industry: The industry is worth investing in, by analyzing the five force model it shows that the industry is attractive and profitable for investors. The low on buyer and supplier power means there will be low bargain power on both supplier and buyer, this can increase a firm's profit in the industry. The low on threats of new entrants and substitutes means the product will remain on a high value and customer are less sensitive to the price changes. The rivalry among existing competitors is high, but according
3

to the Infosys 110 course book (2014) the trends of the competition are increasing in just about all industries. Thus the overall attractiveness of the industry is high.
3.3 Customers and Their Needs

According to New Zealand Fire Service (2010) there were 423 residential electrical fires. This shows the needs of providing fire caused by electrical appliances. As long as one relies on electricity the need of preventing electrical fires can be described as a basic need to household. This need makes every household our potential customer
3.4 The Product and Service

Our product is an add on device to the main power switch and its distribution leads. This device provides three functions, power monitoring system, SMS system and power cut off system for protecting a potential electrical fire. The power monitoring system logs the power usage in normal operation, when an abnormal operation is detected the SMS system sends a message to the owner informing the abnormal operation. The owner can reply the message to activate the power cutoff system. This will protect ones personal and property safety caused by any potential electrical fires thus satisfies the customer's needs
3.5 Suppliers and Partners

The two main supplier for our business are raw material producer and IT technician to provide their support to complete our product. The material producer provides all the raw material which is needed for the manufacture of our product and the IT technician provides their support for building the system of the product such as the voltage log. The partners of our company are delivery firms and telecommunication provider. Our business uses the delivery company to ship all our products to our customers. A partnership is formed with a delivery company for using their exclusive services in exchange for better price and fast delivery. An alliance is required with a telecommunication provider for them to support the functionalities of our product such as the SMS system or the call system.

3.6 Strategy: Differentiation

As "customer and need" illustrate, our potential customer can be every household that relies on electricity, so the scope of our market is a broad market. The business will have a high cost because of the high capital requirement due to the standard the product must meet. Looking from the vision statement the company also aims to provide the best quality service to our customers so all these will increase the cost of the business. The overall strategy is therefore Differentiation
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Make the product or service

The most important value chain activity for this business is Make the product or service This is the most important value chain activity because the purpose of Saviour switch is to protect people's personal and property safety/ In order to achieve this the product must reach a set of standard to insure the quality of the product.

3.8 Business Processes

3.8.1. INVENTORY ORDERING PROCESS - This process is important because it

assures that the

orders for raw material is generated automatically when there's a shortage on the material inventory. When the warehouse finds a shortage on the inventory of raw material it will put the request into the ordering process system and the system will generate an order request. This request will then be sent to the raw material manufacturer. The material will be sent to us from the manufacturer followed with the invoices, the invoices will go to the accounting department for financial records and payment and completing the whole process.

3.8.2. PRODUCT MANUFACTURE PROCESS - This

process is important because it controls the

production of the products and test whether it meets the high standard the company set. This match with the value chain activity for the business. The material is sent to the factory from the warehouse for manufactory, use, this involves the inventory movement system, the material is then put on an assembly line to assemble. The finished goods will be tested for their quality, this is taken to the quality control department and all the goods that met the standard are taken back to the warehouse for sales.

3.9 Functionalities
3.9.1.INVENTORY ORDERING PROCESS

Collect all the requests for inventory Generate orders from the collected requests and sends the order to the material provider

3.9.2.PRODUCT MANUFACTURE PROCESS

3.10 Systems

Records all the inventory movement within the business Finished goods are tested for their qualities.

3.10.1. INVENTORY ORDERING SYSTEM - This system will collect all the requests from the

warehouse. Analysis it and generate a final order form that is sent to the raw material manufacturer.
3.10.2. INVENTORY MOVEMENT SYSTEM - This

system will track the inventory movement

within the business, such as how many materials sent to the factory for production and how many finished goods are received after the production.
3.10.3. QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEM -

This system will test all the goods when they are

assembled for their qualities, the goods that met the quality is sent back to the warehouse with the inventory movement system and those goods that does not meet the standard are to be destroyed
