Illustration Black & White Project


Objectives: After a discussion and evaluation of composition in creating a black & white piece showing a strong emphasis on the value scale students will be able to show: Show an understanding and awareness of composition and how to arrange elements in a design. Use prior knowledge to create an imaginative illustrated piece based on a text. Identify use of visual elements and principles such as form, line, shape, and emphasis in a personal design as well as designs of others. Use drawing equipment (like pencils, charcoal, paper, erasers, etc). Create an original piece, there can be inspiration from a photograph, but the piece must be put together in the students own vision. Create an artist statement focusing on personal values, critical thinking, and art-making.

Grab a laptop and do some research on stories. In your sketchbook, please answer the following questions: a. What story, song, poem inspires you and why? b. Is it the whole poem, song, or story, or one section of it that makes you like the work? c. Is it a classic work or a current work (within the last decade)? d. Is it a cultural story for creating values within a culture, or a piece more about one event or idea? e. What images does it make you think of? f. Draw out, as best as you can, what ideas the work of writing inspires in you. g. Print out a few pictures of different references you will need to help you draw a successful piece. In your sketchbook, create a collage (combination of images) that you can use to tell the story. a. We will need to copy this and make it black and white. b. Practice drawing and shading challenging areas. c. DO NOT replicate or copy the exact image from another artist, please use a part and make a collage. Tell your own version of a story.

Criteria: Student must create an illustration with reference to a story, poem, or song that inspires the student Student must have a printed out copy of the section of story, poem, or song that they have chosen in their process notebook. Student must have a finished collage of images to use for their piece Student must use shading and demonstrate a wide variety of values in their piece. Piece must look finished and use all the space provided. An artist reflection will be expected, please use these questions below to guide your writing. o Please use the hot pink artist statement handout to help aid you in completing in your artist reflection/statement

References/tips: Design hints Pick a story, song, poem that you know well and enjoy. Ask your peers if they think that your collage tells a story. Make sure youve really read your song, poem, or story. PRACTICE shading in the packet before you shade on your piece.

Due: March 21st (Dont forget that theres TCAP testing the first week in March, so this sounds far off, but its not).
