MODULE 4 SKIMMING
Skimming is used to quickly identify the main ideas of text Usually it will be used when we read newspaper to figure out if an article interesting or not Skimming = reading fast and efficiently

SKIMMING STRATEGIES
Find main idea of each paragraph Figure out the suitable title for the text Determine content of the text based on title, first paragraph and the last paragraph

Skimming works well to find dates, names, and places. It also might be used to review graphs, tables, and charts.

EXAMPLE
Health Minister Nafsiah Mboi said on Friday that Indonesia remained an endemic country for neglected tropical diseases that could cause disabilities and decrease the quality of human resources. Neglected tropical diseases were poverty-related infectious illnesses mostly affected the poor in developing countries, she said. They [the diseases] are often neglected. Its true that they are not so deadly but they can cause disabilities and create huge potential economic losses, she told a press conference on the sidelines of a two-day ASEAN seminar on neglected tropical diseases entitled Clinical practice, guidelines for the strategy and management toward the elimination of neglected tropical diseases in the ASEAN region. According to the Health Ministry, five out of a total of 17 neglected tropical diseases remained endemic in Indonesia despite efforts to eliminate them. They include filariasis, leprosy, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis, and yaws.

Everyone wants to be beautiful, but what is it about a person that really makes her beautiful? The truth is that its not any one thing. Beauty is a combination of many qualities that give pleasure to the senses or mind. Your personality, sense of humor, and compassion for others are a large part of what makes you beautiful. The secret to being beautiful is feeling beautiful. It is more about inner qualities than physical appearance. You may not love all of your quality but if you see yourself as a strong person with many goals and talents, you will begin to feel more comfortable with yourself. Feel good about yourself and let your positive attitude shine. What is the main idea of paragraph?
