Listen to part of a conversation between a student and a professor

M- Professor, can I talk to you?
W- Hello. Yes, I am free right now. Is there something you didnt understand in todays
lecture?
M- Actually it is about the *assignment on Medieval England. I am unsure about *citing the
sources.
W- Alright. Can I first see your outline?
M- Well, I dont have it written down, but I planned it out in my mind. I already started writing
the *first draft.
W- hmm.. Are you sure you can write your research paper without a written outline? You may
not have enough information to finish your paper.
M Ill be fine.
W It really helps to write an outline. I strongly recommend you write one. The outline will
help you see how much progress you have made in the paper and organize your information,
guiding you to the right track. You know what I mean?
M Yes. I get it. I think it will help me a lot because I will be writing about *a whole bunch of
information.
W- Great idea. So, what is your topic again?
M I want to write about castles in the 11
th
and 12
th
century.
W Alright. What about castles exactly?
M- Um, I was thinking about the shift in the role of castles, such as the role in castles after
being used as a *military fort.
W- Okay. I am just checking, but do you know what the military purpose of castles was?
M- Of course. When the Vikings were *raiding England, people had to find themselves a
shelter, where they could be safe from enemies. So, rich aristocrats would often build high
walls around their castle.
W- Correct. Do you also remember what the rich aristocrats were called by the people?
M- *The Lord. If they were raided, all the people would hide behind the castle walls so that
the walls protected the people.
W If it served such a good purpose, why did castles disappear?
M The Vikings disappeared as well as dangerous wars. People eventually did not need
protection. However, some people continued to build castles just for their *reputation.
W- That is true. Anything else you were thinking of including in the paper?
M- I was thinking of including information about the law back then. The law was that the royal
family could use any castles whenever they wanted if it was necessary. In fact, the Lords
took it as a great *privilege for them to be using their own castle. W- I was worried that you
might not be prepared enough, but it seems like you have done a lot of research.
M- Thanks. But I am still stuck with citing my resources. You know, I am not even sure
whether I should make a *bibliography or to add *footnotes.
W- You should definitely make a bibliography.
M- Okay, but how do you make it? Is there some kind of set format for it or is it just listing the

name and dates?
W- Im afraid I cant give you all the information right now. There are several formats used in
different fields, so its hard to give you just one specific guideline. So I think you should visit
the writing center, and they can probably help you. As far as I know they have a weekly
workshop to help students. If you take part in it, you can get some useful information you can
refer to.
M- A weekly workshop?
W- Yes. The writing center is there to answer your questions.
M- I guess I should go there then.
W- Sounds great. Good luck with your paper, I am looking forward to reading it.
