hen Fr. Louis Querbes formed the Clerics of St. Viator in the 1830s, he decided to honor a well-loved saint from his hometown by the name of Viator. Viator was born sometime in the early 4th century in the city of Lyon, in an area we now call France, in Western Europe. Some information about the times in which Viator lived helps to make sense of the story you are about to read, especially because the events in this story took place almost 1,700 years ago. During the life of Viator, Lyon was a part of a province of the Roman Empire known as Gaul. This province was so huge, Roman leaders developed Lyon as a central location to govern the region. Over time, Lyon grew in size and importance and became the capital of Gaul, the most important city in the region. Lyon was the birthplace of two Roman emperors as well as a very important Catholic bishop from the 2nd Century, St. Irenaeus. St. Irenaeus was named bishop of Lyon only after the previous bishop was martyred by the Roman leader, Marcus Aurelius. Following the severe persecution under Marcus Aurelius, Christianity slowly began to spread throughout Gaul in the 3rd and 4th Centuries. As a youth, Viator was active in sharing his Christian faith with children living near the cathedral in Lyon. He read Scriptures to children and taught them how to live and celebrate their faith. His zeal in serving as a lector and catechist gained the attention of Lyons bishop, St. Just. St. Just could see that Viator was strongly committed to serving Jesus and the two became life-long friends. This is the story about their friendship and how this friendship helped them live out their faith.
he story you are about to read is old, very old. It is found among some of the most ancient collections of stories about the lives of the saints, some more than 1,800 years old. Such stories transport us into the lives of ordinary men and women whose lives demonstrated extraordinary acts of faith, hope and love. For this reason, the Church publically honors these men and women of faith and makes special efforts to direct our attention to the pious practices of our ancestors in faith. This retelling of the life of St. Viator appeared originally in Spain in 1960. Owing to the simplicity and beauty of the story, we decided to redraw the images and translate the story into English. We thank Fr. Goio Esqubel, C.S.V., Provincial Superior of Spain, for sharing the original images. A thorough account of the life of St. Viator can be found in St. Viator and the Viatorians by Fr. E.L. Rivard, C.S.V. (Chicago:1916) as well as in the excellent pamphlet, Saint Viator: Our Patron Saint, by Fr. Jack Linnan, C.S.V. Complimentary copies of this pamphlet are available upon request in writing or through our website.

he Clerics of St. Viator was founded in Vourles, France in the 19th Century during the years following the French Revolution. It was a time of political upheaval and social unrest. Christian education, especially in the rural areas, was woefully neglected. It was within this context that Fr. Louis Querbes (1793-1859) founded the congregation. Realizing the need to provide education for youth, Fr. Querbes vision was to send religious brothers and lay catechists of deep faith and competent learning to parish schools in the countryside. In addition, these men assisted country pastors in their parishes. Episcopal approval of the congregation for vowed members only was granted on Nov. 3, 1831 followed by papal approval on Sept. 21, 1838. Canonical regulations prevented the inclusion of the lay catechists by Rome. In 1865, three Viatorians from the recently established Province of Canada implanted the vision of Fr. Querbes on U.S. soil in Bourbonnais, Illinois, 40 miles south of Chicago. On Aug. 2, 1882, the Province of Chicago was established. In 1978, the congregation gave new life to the lay catechists that Fr. Querbes had imagined and accepted lay men and women associates who would commit themselves to participate in the charism of the congregation. In 1999, the first associates of the Province of Chicago were welcomed.
