Data Mining and The Project Construction Building

As we know that data mining is one of the tools that we used to extract the information from the raw data after two important steps, selection and pre-processing data. According to Bala (2008), from a large amount of data, data minings role is to extract the data into an information and picking out the relevant information that finds the application in various business decisionmaking processes. In this project construction building, data mining was being used on building maintenance during the building life cycle. In a building maintenance, there are several things that need to be considered based on the experience, which are how often a system need to be repair and how long time needed to repair. All these answers depends on the managers ability to obtain reliable information which resulting whether success or failure in developing good schedule. budgets and other projects. The project management tools such as facility managers seek to improve the available scheduling algorithms and estimating spreadsheets are another aspects of building maintenance. A lot of data had been stored and caused flood of data. Therefore, the substantial development of data storage technology with more advantages such as faster, higher capacity, cheaper storage devices, better database management systems and data warehousing technology. All this can make the enormous amount of data into computerized data systems. This technology has becoming more and more available but there some problems when the managers did not have much time to analyse the computerized data, the complexity of the data analysis process is beyond the capabilities of the systems commonly used and there has been no well defined automated mechanism to extract, pre-process and analyse the data and summarise the result so that the managers can use it. Data mining can be applied to solve this problem which act as the powerful tools to extract relevant and useful information from all the data. Data mining also called as Knowledge Discovery in Database(KDD) which has been defined as the nontrivial extraction of implicit, previously unknown, and potentially useful information from data (Frawley et al 1992). To discover and present knowledge in a form that easily understang and applicable to humans, data

mining using machine learning, statistical and visualization techniques. According to Peitgen (1992), data mining enables us to understand about systems that were once in a chaotic actually have a predictable pattern and with KDD this patterns and causal relationship in the data in AEC project can be found. Applying KDD in this project, easier to identify the problem and manager can build a knowledge for the project of on-going construction project and also for the next upcoming project (Soibelman and Kim 2002). The difference between traditional method of statistical data analysis, KDD is an automated process that discovers new trends and patterns without the need of human intervention. There are several roles that be needed for the building life cycle in construction project. They are building design, construction documentation, building construction, physical building, building maintenance and maintenance database. There are also three types of knowledge which corresponded with the roles stated before and this types of knowledgecomes from information database in BMS.Firstly, components that frequently need maintenance and need to be inspected carefully, second, historical consequences of maintenance decisions that may inform future decision and lastly, refurbishment of the building in question. In conclusion, by applying data mining techniques, it helped to discover useful rules that allowed locating some critical issues that will have substantial impact on improving the management of building life cycle. Data mining discovers procedures to reduce future failures, repairs or maintain operations that are being done improperly, ways to improve reports, undocumented methods being used by experienced personnel that result reduced down time and lastly advanced notice before failure occurs.
