Madeleine Evangelista 1-5-14 Period 1 Candidate Analysis In the Maryland governor race of 2014, Anthony Brown is likely to secure

the nomination over fellow democrats Heather Mizeur and Doug Gansler. Anthony Brown is the current Lt. Governor under Governor Martin OMalley, and his experience in the governors office will earn him credibility with voters that Mizeur and Gansler do not have. While Doug Gansler has similar agendas as Brown, he has not shown himself as capable of following it through, and has swayed public opinion away from him in his recent statements. Heather Mizeur, on the other hand, has extreme liberal political agendas, and for this reason may not have as wide an appeal to voters as Brown or Gansler. Because of his close experience with the position of governor, his strong public appeal, and demonstration of capability in office, Anthony Brown is likely to win the Democratic nomination for Maryland Governor in 2014. Anthony Brown represented Prince Georges County in the Maryland House of Delegates and was the Majority Whip before being Lt. Governor of Maryland. He and Governor Martin OMalley have had favorable public opinion during their two terms, and having served in such a position is beneficial to Brown in having existing public support, and recognition of both his name and his experience and actions. Brown has transformed what was once a largely undefined and ceremonial position into one of substance, by being actively involved in not only working with OMalley, but in setting his own agendas and carrying them out (Office of Lt. Gov.). This active involvement in his position sends the message to his voters that he has a high capacity to enact change where change is due, a quality for which many are looking at a time when ineffective politics seems the norm. He has shown success in implementing policies regarding increasing jobs, providing for schools, expanding health care, and legalizing same-sex marriage. He helped in passing legislation to legalize same-sex marriage in Maryland and to

Madeleine Evangelista 1-5-14 Period 1 extend health care in Maryland to about 400,000 people, most notably, and is working toward implementing Obamacare in Maryland, though with some difficulty. While all three candidates support equal marriage rights, Equality Maryland, the leading gay rights organization in the state, has endorsed Brown as the most capable of carrying out action to ensure equal rights, which is likely to gain support from voters who feel strongly about the issue, and also speaks to his power to get things done in a general sense (Wagner). Brown has a strong public image that has set him up to win the nomination. Doug Gansler has a similar agenda to that of Anthony Brown, but lacks the type of experience and proven efficiency of Brown, and has lowered public opinion about him with recent comments against his opponents. Gansler is currently Marylands Attorney General and was the chief prosecutor in Marylands largest jurisdiction before that. He has advocated for protection of the environment, homeowners, and online safety, in addition to same-sex marriage rights and healthcare (Douglas F. Gansler). Gansler also appeals to Montgomery County residents, saying that since he lives there, he sees what and how problems can be fixed, including the higher taxes for the countys residents (Wagner). Although Gansler emerged as a popular choice, his recent comments on the failings of implementing Obamacare in Maryland have been detrimental to his public image. Following issues in the governors office regarding the implementation of Obamacare, Gansler made comments which some felt were aggressive and damaging to his image, saying that he is furious over the course of action that is being taken in Maryland (Fitzgerald). He also made a statement in which he said that Brown was relying on his minority status to get him votes, which was received poorly by the public (Lee). His complaints oppose the stances of Brown and Mizeur and isolate him in that respect, which will likely cost him the support of voters.

Madeleine Evangelista 1-5-14 Period 1 Heather Mizeur has decidedly more extreme liberal politics than her opponents, which may earn her strong appeal to a select few, but lose her the average voters full support. Mizeur is now a Montgomery County delegate, having been a Takoma Park city councilmember and appointed by Obama to the Democratic National Committee and to an advisory group on health care prior to her current position (About Heather). Expanding health care, protecting same-sex marriage rights and reproductive rights, and legalizing marijuana are Mizeurs main focuses, and she was a key player in the fight for equal marriage rights in 2010 and 2011 as well as in the protection of female reproductive rights (Wagner). From 2007 to 2011, Mizeur sponsored several successful bills ensuring such reproductive rights and giving aid to low-income women, as well as extending health care to more Maryland residents. She takes strong stances on issues and consistently stands by them, and has received praise for her perseverance and ability to actualize her plans. Despite her praise and success, Mizeur consciously makes her campaigning devoid of any excess hype or exaggeration in order to get her points across at face value. She may lose presence in the campaign because of the nature of campaigning and because her opponents are not operating the same way. Although she supports many of the same issues as her opponents, Mizeur also actively advocates more extreme liberal views such as the legalization of marijuana and raising taxes on the top 10% of Marylanders and lowering them for the remaining 90%, which is likely to isolate her from voters who are not as accustomed to such strong viewpoints and may not be willing to support her with a vote (Wagner). If elected, she would also be Marylands first female governor and the countrys first openly gay governor. While she may gain solid support in specific local areas that are prominently liberal, such as Takoma Park, in which she was a councilmember, the majority of voters may find her beliefs too extreme.

Madeleine Evangelista 1-5-14 Period 1 Although Anthony Brown, Doug Gansler, and Heather Mizeur all have similar objectives in their campaigns for the Maryland Governor nomination, Doug Gansler has damaged his public image and has not shown the same ability as Brown and Mizeur to implement plans, and Heather Mizeur advocates extreme liberal standpoints which may deter voters and has not made herself a prominent figure. Anthony Brown is the most likely to win because of his active involvement in his already prominent position, demonstration of his capability to effect change, and preexisting positive public image.
