At the 3 p.m. dismissal of all
Haddonfield elementary schools,
children can be seen running
about town in excitement and
anticipation for whatever the re-
mainder of their day may bring.
Less noticeably, in most cases,
the crossing guards of Haddon-
field can be seen assuming their
assigned posts.
Theyre the unsung heroes of
our town, said resident and par-
ent Nancy Sullivan.
They are the ones who keep
our kids safe, said resident and
mother Dawn McCormick.
Longtime resident of Haddon-
field Rosario Ross Vecchio as-
sumes a post at the corner of the
intersection of Grove Street and
Hopkins Avenue.
My granddaughter started
going to Tatem. She asked me to
become the crossing guard
here, Vecchio said.
After applying with the police
department, and figuring out an
agreement with the family who
owns the corner house on the in-
tersection to park his car in their
driveway, Vecchio fulfilled his
granddaughters wish to guard
three years ago. He also fulfilled
neighbors dreams of having a

At the corner of Glover and Grove streets, Haddon-
field crossing guard Marianne Mihalick directs traffic
down Grove Street. Mihalick guards in front of Tatem
Elementary School, assuring that cars do not travel
down the one-way entrance by making an illegal left-
hand turn onto the street. Mihalick is affectionately
known to the kids as Aunt Snoop.

MARCH 1218, 2014 THE HADDONFIELD SUN 3
By L. HABER
The Sun
The March 4 meeting of the
Planning Board was highlighted
by the topic of sign deviations.
The previous ordinance re-
garding sign deviations explains
that all Haddonfield businesses
are allowed to erect signs that
take up approximately 1.2 square
feet. The same rule has been ap-
plied in the past, and still applies
to multi-person residence build-
ings.
The board explained that signs
can be attached to buildings, or
separate from buildings. The
board reminded those in atten-
dance that it does not specifically
delegate where signs can be
placed.
Its all about size, zoning offi-
cer Steve Walko said.
After receiving requests from
building owners who only have
up to two tenants living in multi-
person residences, Walko and the
other board members empha-
sized that such small residences
do not require an abundance of
signs for space and aesthetic rea-
sons. Such residences, and most
professional office buildings in
Haddonfield, are allowed only one
1.2 square foot sign.
Other than the topic of sign de-
viations, the board did not have
much to say.
There really werent any
other highlights, Walko said.
The board reminded residents
all questions regarding signs, and
other topics, may be answered by
the official Master Plan previous-
ly approved by the board.
The public can now view the
Master Plan and all other board-
mandated documents online at
www.haddonfieldnj.org/bor-
ough_boards-planning.php.
There was a meeting reminder
that historic preservation com-
mission applications are due to
the zoning board.
The next regularly scheduled
planning board meeting will be
held on Tuesday, April 1.
Board members have not yet
discussed what may be on the
agenda for the next meeting,
though, according to Walko,
spring meetings tend to garner
more topics than those at the end
of the winter season.
The board is scheduled to meet
on the first Tuesday of each
month, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bor-
ough Hall auditorium.

Haddon Fortnightly
thanks police for help
The Haddon Fortnightly Gen-
eral Club would like to publicly
express its appreciation to the
Haddonfield Police Department
for controlling the traffic in front
of the clubhouse on Feb. 21 for the
annual Valentine Luncheon.
Due to the remaining snow
along the curb, dangerous condi-
tions existed for guests. Patrol-
man Joseph V. Marano was the
first to respond to the groups call
for assistance. With additional po-
lice help, guests were able to safe-
ly exit to their cars and cross
Kings Highway to enter our club-
house.
The Fortnightly Club is ex-
tremely grateful for their service.

Resident concerned with
possible church parking lot
Many Haddonfield residents have ex-
pressed concern to date about the Christ
Science Church's demand that it be permit-
ted to erect a parking lot on Sylvan Lake
Avenue.
I share those concerns, and would like to
take this opportunity to respond to a Feb-
ruary letter from the church's lawyer,
Damien Del Duca, to the Haddonfield zon-
ing board, in which he pressed the church's
case for a variance.
In his letter, Mr. Del Duca wrote that if
the Haddonfield zoning board were to ap-
prove the church's application for a vari-
ance, there would be, "No substantial detri-
ment to the public good."
That claim is erroneous at best, and mis-
leading at worst.
Clearly, granting a variance that allows
the installation of a parking lot in what is
essentially a noncommercial, residential
area of Haddonfield would cause substan-
tial detriment to residents.
Indeed, the variance would sanction the
purchase and leveling of homes in those
areas, for the construction of unsightly
parking lots. This precedent, in turn,
would threaten the property values of in-
numerable homes in our town, not to men-
tion the aesthetic and historic integrity of
many of those neighborhoods.
At a time when repeated demolition and
construction of McMansions threatens
the property values of more modest neigh-
boring homes in Haddonfield, the last
thing Haddonfield homeowners need is a
precedent-setting variance that allows
homes to be ripped out in favor of erecting
parking lots.
This is a road that the Haddonfield zon-
ing board must not force residents to go
down, irrespective of whether the appli-

E
ver since the school shooting
in Newtown, Conn., in Decem-
ber 2012, school districts across
the country have done their best to im-
prove school security.
Some have hired armed guards to
stand watch in school buildings. Some
have improved security systems, lock-
ing all exterior doors and filtering visi-
tors through one main entrance. Some
have installed metal detectors and
other screening devices. Some have
done all this, and more.
New Jersey officials recognize the
need for increased school security, and
they want to do something about it
or, at least, they want to study what to
do about it.
The state Senate and Assembly re-
cently established a School Security
Task Force that will ultimately give
recommendations on how to improve
school security and safety. The group
will also make recommendations on
building security and assessment
standards for current school buildings
and new ones to come.
Some of the areas of focus they will
study:
Placing screening systems at
school entrances
Using biometric, retina or other
advanced recognition
Stationing police officers in each
school building
Requiring advanced student and
visitor identification
Conducting an official study on
school security with a panel of indus-
try experts is a tremendous, and long
overdue, idea. Just like with student
testing and budgeting requirements,
its a good idea to have a standardized
system for security at schools through-
out New Jersey.
But this begs the question: How will
we pay for whatever this task force
recommends?
Lets say, for example, the task force
recommends a biometric, retina or
other advanced recognition system
for visitors entering school buildings,
and our state government then passes
that bill. How are our already-cash-
strapped school districts going to pay
for what sounds like an expensive sys-
tem?
Studying school security on a
statewide level is a great first step.
Making recommendations on how to
improve security is a natural second
step. But a necessary third step must
be how any required security en-
hancements will be paid for, and by
whom. In an age when schools are hav-
ing trouble paying for teachers, its
hard to imagine biometrics being easy
to fit into the budget.
in our opinion
Tighter school security
Safer is always better, but whos going to pay for it?
Your thoughts
Do our schools need tighter security?
Should state government play a role in
telling school districts what they must do
in regard to school security? Share your
thoughts through a letter to the editor.

The Rotary Youth Exchange
Program is seeking host families
in Haddonfield to sponsor a for-

2014-2015 academic school year.
These students, who wish to ex-
perience a greater understanding
of our culture and language, will
attend classes at Haddonfield Me-

Hosting an exchange student
from another country is a chal-

challenges a host family to be-
come familiar with another cul-

Host families must be able to
provide room and board for the
exchange student.
Parents are also expected to ex-

would their own children, and in-

Ideally, the exchange program
tries to have two to three host

I feel proud, and I think its re-

good with people it makes the
whole community safer, Vec-

Along with his fellow guards,
Vecchio puts the safety of chil-

of his priority list.
Im supposed to be here at 8 o
clock, but I come at 7:30 because
of the earlier kids, Vecchio said.
Hes the best crossing guard
in town, said resident Michael
Feeney, after crossing the street
with Vecchio on March 5.
My kids love him. Everybody
loves Mr. Ross, especially his bad
jokes, McCormick said.
Vecchios jokes are also appar-
ent to the children.
Hes always telling jokes to
everybody, said Leo Brickner, a
Tatem student who walks to and
from school.
At the corner of Glover and
Grove streets is another beloved
guard, Marianne Mihalick. She is
also known to the kids as "Aunt

cant for the variance is a noted
church, business or private citi-
zen.
Ultimately, the members of the
Haddonfield zoning board must
ask themselves whether putting a
parking lot next to their own
homes would be a substantial
detriment.
I share the view of other resi-
dents of Haddonfield that granti-
ng this variance would cause sub-
stantial detriment to innumer-
able homeowners in our town.
The sooner the zoning board also
acknowledges that fact, the better.

Nomination applications
for character award available
Nomination applications for
the Julie R. Macier Character
Award are available through
April 15, in the main offices of
Haddonfield Memorial High
School and Haddonfield Middle
School.
Nomination forms are also
available at the front desk of the
Haddonfield Public Library. The
Board of Education and Parent
Teacher Association are asking
for help in selecting one eighth
grader and one high school senior
to receive this award in memory
of Haddonfield Memorial High
School student Julie R. Macier.
After Macier passed away from
a hard-fought battle with
leukemia on Oct. 7, 1994, the
awards were established in 1995
to memorialize such a positive
and courageous student.
The nominees for the award
should be Haddonfield eighth
graders or high school seniors
who have exhibited wonderful
character traits, such as courage,
honesty, integrity, sense of
humor, compassion, persever-
ance, friendship, trustworthiness,
patience, respect and faith.
Any or all of the traits exhibit-
ed in nominated students should
be ones that Macier exemplified
in her own life. Nominations
should be submitted not only by
school administrators and teach-
ers, but also students and resi-
dents of the community.
The final deadline to return
nominations to the pick-up desti-
nations mentioned is April 15.
For more information, contact
Julie R. Macier Award chairman

Mihalick, a retired Cinammin-
son police officer, received the
name after writing articles for the
Police Athletic League titled
Snoopys Dog Box. Mihalick ex-
plained guarding to be as chal-
lenging as police work, in certain
aspects.
People dont realize how hard
we work, Mihalick said.
Mihalick has been guarding for
10 years, and at the particularly
challenging corner of Glover and
Grove for five. Because of her pre-
vious police certifications, Mihal-
ick not only helps kids and others
cross the street, but has the addi-
tional challenge of directing one-
way traffic leaving Tatem Ele-
mentary School.
Karen-Joy Schultz, principal of
Tatem, elaborated on the tough
position Haddonfield crossing
guards hold.
Theyve always been a consis-
tent, loyal, friendly presence in
town, Schultz said. The com-
munity needs to know they go
above and beyond, particularly
around Tatem.
Its tough youre protecting
peoples lives, said Mihalicks
daughter, Christine Derenzo.
Derenzo guards in Runnemede,
and understands the difficulties
of controlling traffic flow at the
same time as helping people cross
busy streets.
The cars constantly blow
their horns they dont want to
let up or stop, Derenzo said.
Theyre in their warm cars,
shes out here in 14 degree weath-
er.
Mihalick is used to extreme
temperatures of all kinds, as she
also used to be a volunteer fire
fighter. Still, the brutal conditions
of this winter have surprised all.
They are here in any kind of
weather, Sullivan said.
With all of this weather, they
are just amazing they were
here mornings when it was scary
out there, Schultz said.
Ask any of the guards around
town about their jobs, and they
may tell you it is necessary for
them to be out there at all times,
whether schools are openning or
letting out. Most also have exten-
sive knowledge of street safety,
and are happy to answer any
questions from the public.
You cant be afraid of traffic.
Be aggressive, but careful, Mi-
halick explained.
In addition to guarding, Vec-
chio, Mihalick and other guards
go above and beyond the call of
duty. Guards bring children gifts
and candy on special occasions
and during the holidays. Schultz
mentioned that some of the
guards, including Mihalick, have
even knitted sweaters for people
in the past, without any direct
thanks in return.
My kids mean the world to
me, and I have watched them all
grow up, Mihalick said.
The guards contribution to the
kids has not gone totally unno-
ticed, however.
They give out candy during
the holidays they are always
rushing so people are OK snow,
rain, they are never not there,
Brickner said.
Theyre all really friendly. It
makes you feel safe when youre
walking places, Hilgan said.
The guards are allies to all who
enjoy walking in Haddonfield.
For those who have never talked
to their neighborhood guard,
there has never been a better time
to try it, or show support, espe-
cially after this harsh winter.
