WINDLOADS
1609.1 Applications. Buildings, structures and parts thereof
shallbedesignedtowithstandtheminimumwindloadspre-
scribedherein.Decreasesinwindloadsshallnotbemadefor
theeffectofshieldingbyotherstructures.
1609.1.1 Determination of wind loads. Windloadsonev-
erybuildingorstructureshallbedeterminedinaccordance
withSection6ofASCE7.Windshallbeassumedtocome
fromanyhorizontaldirectionandwindpressuresshallbe
assumedtoactnormaltothesurfaceconsidered.
Exceptions:
1. WindloadsdeterminedbytheprovisionsofSec-
tion1609.6.
2. SubjecttothelimitationsofSection1609.1.1.1,the
provisionsofSBCCI SSTD 10 Standard for Hurri-
cane Resistant Residential Construction shall be per-
mittedfor applicableGroupR-2andR-3buildings.
3. Subject to the limitations of Section 1609.1.1.1,
residential structures using the provisions of the
AF&PA Wood Frame Construction Manual for
One- and Two-Family Dwellings.
4. DesignsusingNAAMM FP 1001 Guide Specifica-
tion for Design of Metal Flagpoles.
5. DesignsusingTIA/EIA-222forantenna-support-
ingstructuresandantennas.
1609.1.1.1 Applicability. The provisions of SSTD10 are
applicableonlytobuildingslocatedwithinExposure,B
or C as defined in Section 1609.4. The provisions of
SSTD 10 and the AF&PA Wood Frame construction
Manual for One- andTwo-Family Dwellings shall not ap-
plytobuildingssitedontheupperhalfofanisolatedhill,
ridgeorescarpmentmeetingthefollowingconditions:
1. The hill, ridge or escarpment is 60 feet (18 288
mm)orhigheriflocatedin ExposureBor30feet
(9144mm)orhigheriflocatedinExposureC;
2. Themaximumaverageslopeofthehillexceeds10
percent;and
3. Thehill,ridgeorescarpmentisunobstructedup-
windbyothersuchtopographicfeaturesforadis-
tancefromthehighpointof50timestheheightof
thehillor1mile(1.61km),whicheverisgreater.
1609.1.2 Minimumwind loads. The wind loads used in the
designofthemainwind-force-resistingsystemshallnotbe
lessthan10psf(0.479kN/m

)multipliedbytheareaofthe
buildingorstructureprojectedonaverticalplanenormalto
thewinddirection.Inthecalculationofdesignwindloads
for components and cladding for buildings, the algebraic
sumofthepressuresactingonoppositefacesshallbetaken
intoaccount.Thedesignpressureforcomponentsandclad-
dingofbuildingsshallnotbelessthan10psf(0.479kN/m

actingineitherdirectionnormaltothesurface.Thedesign
force for open buildings and other structures shall not be less

2003INTERNATIONALBUILDINGCODE
STRUCTURALDESIGN
1609.1.3 Anchorage against overturning, uplift and slid-
ing. Structuralmembersandsystemsandcomponentsand
cladding in a building or structure shall be anchored to resist
wind-inducedoverturning,upliftandslidingandtoprovide
continuous load paths for these forces to the foundation.
Whereaportionoftheresistancetotheseforcesisprovided
bydeadload,thedeadload,includingtheweightofsoils
andfoundations,shallbetakenastheminimumdeadload
likelytobeinplaceduringadesignwindevent.Wherethe
alternatebasicloadcombinationsofSection1605.3.2are
used,onlytwo-thirdsoftheminimumdeadloadlikelytobe
inplaceduringadesignwindeventshallbeused.
1609.1.4 Protection of openings. Inwind-bornedebrisre-
gions,glazingthatreceivespositiveexternalpressureinthe
lower 60feet (18288mm) inbuildings shall be assumedtobe
openingsunlesssuchglazingisimpactresistantorprotected
withanimpact-resistantcoveringmeetingtherequirements
ofanapprovedimpact-resistingstandardorASTME1996
andofASTME1886referencedthereinasfollows:
1. Glazedopeningslocatedwithin30feet(9144mm)of
gradeshallmeettherequirementsoftheLargeMis-
sileTestofASTME1996.
2. Glazed openings located more than 30 feet (9144
mm) above grade shall meet the provisions of the
SmallMissileTestofASTME1996.
Exceptions:
1. Woodstructuralpanelswithaminimumthicknessof

inch(11.1mm)andmaximumpanelspanof8
feet(2438mm)shallbepermittedforopeningpro-
tectioninone- andtwo-storybuildings.Panelsshall
beprecuttocovertheglazedopeningswithattach-
menthardwareprovided.Attachmentsshallbede-
signedtoresistthecomponentsandcladdingloads
determinedinaccordance withthe provisions of Sec-
tion1609.6.1.2.AttachmentinaccordancewithTa-
ble1609.1.4ispermittedforbuildingswithamean
roof height of 33 feet (10 058 mm) or less where wind
speedsdonotexceed130mph(57.2m/s).
2. BuildingsinCategoryIasdefinedinTable1604.5,
including production greenhouses as defined in
Section1608.3.3.
