Chanting Flips the Happiness Switch! Call and Response Foundation Announces 2014 Schedule

! (March 10, 2014) The Call & Response Foundation, an organization devoted to serving and expanding mantra music and the healing power of chant, announced today its 2014 schedule of concerts, intensive retreats, and community outreach projects that include visits to maximum security prisons. ! Among the highlights for the year are tours by a number of kirtan artists: The Hanumen, a four-man group that celebrates sacred sound with a unique experience of world music, mystic poetry and chanting (March 14 -- March 31 & July 5 - August 1); Brenda McMorrow & John de Kadt, a duo that creates a powerful experience of song and sound blending voice, acoustic guitar, percussion and spoken word (May 22 -- June 16); Sheela Bringi a versatile singer and musician whose hypnotic performances blend inuences from her classical Indian and jazz roots, (April 25 - May 9); and Adam Bauer a compelling and deeply soulful new artist who is stepping out on his own after years as a bassist supporting other well-known artists, (April 20 -- May 19). See Hanumen video here. ! The Call and Response Foundation also plays a key role in supporting large scale events for the public throughout the year. On the schedule for June 2014 is 24Hour Kirtan in West Virginia and Wanderlust Vermont, followed by two Vermantra events held respectively in October and December. See full schedule below.

In addition to presenting public concerts, the Call and Response Foundation is committed to serving diverse populations by partnering with community organizations. The Call and Response Outreach program works with educational institutions, health organizations, correctional facilities, shelters and halfway houses by offering grants that cover production expenses so that mantra artist can perform in these facilities and share the healing benets of mantra music with everyone. ! ! Earlier this year, the outreach program visited Oregon State Prison in February. Also on the schedule are Oregon State Hospital (March), Riverbend Maxium Security Prison (March), Skyland Trail Psychiatric Facility (March), Second Spring, a residential recovery treatment facility in Vermont (April), and Rutgers University (May). Additional partnerships are being added to the calendar throughout the year. ! We offer these events with the intention of creating hope, said Jennifer Caneld, the Foundations director. We have found that when people are exposed to the healing sound of mantras there is a change that occurs in them, their faces soften, they relax -- sometimes there are tears of relief and joy. Even among the most hardened prisoners the vibrations of mantras cut through fear and soften closed hearts. ! ! A mantra is an instrument of the mind, a powerful sound or vibration that one can use to enter into a heightened state of awareness and a deep connection to the heart. It is said that mantras work with the bodys physiology to regulate and balance internal states -- in a sense, ipping on the happiness switch. Mantra music comes in many forms including kirtan, an ancient Indian practice of call and response chanting, which is now undergoing a renaissance in the West. The call and response approach encourages listeners to become participants as they repeat simple mantras along with the musicians. ! After a recent performance at a residential treatment center for the mentally ill, the facilitys director commented, I was away for the entire event but when I came in the door at the end, there was something very different in the building. I couldnt believe how calm the energy felt, peoples faces were different, and I wondered...what just went on for the last hour? ! A prisoner at a correctional facility shared this experience, I found the moment! I found a connection with my breath and my body that I carried with me each and every day of the week. That helped me so much. ! ! The Call and Response Foundation is funded by private donations and in-kind offerings from those who share a vision of conscious music as a transformational tool. Individual and corporate support allows the Foundation to accomplish its mission of advocating on behalf of the healing power of chant, organizing events to reach underserved populations who can benet from mantra music, and offering management

services to the community of chant artists.
