Fraternities and sororities prepare for Greek Sing LaTasha Atcity TNE Writer

LaTasha Atcity/TNE Fraternities and sororities set time aside to practice their routines for Greek Sing. NSU campus and the Tahlequah community are encouraged to attend the event and support the RiverHawk Greeks at 7 p.m., April 5. Greek Sing is an annual fundraiser and competition between Greek organizations. Each fraternity is paired with a sorority for a chance to showcase their Broadway skills. The teams work toward a common goal while enjoying friendly competition. The theme this year is From Broadway with Love, said Casey McCullough, Mustang

junior. The Greek Sing directors, Ethan Hayman and Alix Wells, wanted to give each Greek organization an opportunity to be creative. McCullough said last year, Greek Sing raised $6,000 for Tahlequah Public Schools by selling tickets for the show. The Greek organizations at NSU strive to give back to their community through this process. This years proceeds will be donated to a girl named Payton who was diagnosed with cancer and is going through chemo. Daniel Murray, Bixby sophomore, said he is excited for Greek Sing because it helps everyone grow closer as a Greek community and helps establish new relationships. Raising money for something bigger then ourselves helps people understand how productive we are, said Murray. There are lots of students involved with the Greek system, so we are able to make a greater impact. Greek Sing requires work, dedication and time. The students devote numerous hours to practice, and teamwork is also a huge factor while preparing for the event. Katie Portillo, Poteau freshman, said she enjoys preparing for the event and she is excited to see what the other organizations have arranged. We are able to help raise money for a good cause and build strength in the community, said Portillo. There are also major bragging rights if you win the competition. This years Greek Sing is at 7 p.m., April 5. For more information, email wells04@nsuok.edu. Published 3/12/14
