PROJECT CITIZEN REACHES OUT TO NEW AUDIENCES

Participation in Project Citizen has grown from a pilot program funded by Disney in 1995 to a widely disseminated, internationally recognized civic education curriculum for upper elementary, middle school and high school students. Project Citizen is currently used by an estimated 2 ,!!! teachers and more than one million students in the "nited #tates. $n %isconsin, over &!! free sets of Project Citizen te'tboo(s have been handed out to teachers and youth group leaders since 199). $nternationally, tens of thousands of teachers and hundreds of thousands of young people have participated in Project Citizen in more than &! emerging democracies. $n 2!!5 %isconsin Project Citizen partnered with *cuador as part of the +ivitas ,atin -merican Program. .he Project Citizen ,evel $$ student te't was introduced in /ctober of 2!!). $t is intended for use by high school students, community college students, and in adult education classes. -lthough high school classes now participate in the program they do not compete against the upper elementary and middle school students in the %isconsin #tate Portfolio and 0earing #howcase held at the #tate 1ar of %isconsin and #tate +apitol each year in 2ay. .hey may, however, participate as e'hibition teams. $n another effort to e'pand the opportunity for more young people to participate in Project Citizen, other school and community3based groups are being urged to use Project Citizen as part of their program activities. 4or e'ample, adult leaders of 1oy #couts and 5irl #couts, 30 +lubs, and similar groups can ma(e Project Citizen available to their members. $n %isconsin, a 30 +lub, 5irl #cout .roop, 1oy #cout .roop, .ribal #chool, $slamic #chool, 0mong #chool, $nner +ity #chool, 0ome #chool, Department of +orrections, and students in an -lternative #chool setting, have participated in the Project Citizen program.
