Un doctorado en Chile
Chile est ubicado en el extremo suroc-
cidental de Amrica del Sur, entre la cor-
dillera de los Andes y el ocano Pacfico.
Su largo y angosto territorio se extiende
desde el desierto de Atacama (el ms
rido del mundo) hasta los glaciares de
la Patagonia. Es una de las naciones ms
seguras y estables de Latinoamrica,
hogar de 17 millones de personas.
El nivel de sus instituciones acadmi-
cas lo hace un pas atractivo para visi-
tar, estudiar e investigar. Situacin que
se ve reflejada en el permanente incre-
mento de alumnos extranjeros y la mo-
vilidad estudiantil en sus instituciones
de Educacin Superior.
Laboratorios naturales, el incremento de
la inversin en ciencia y tecnologa, ade-
ms del potenciamiento de la innova-
cin, la asociatividad entre los sectores
pblico y privado y el nfasis el incre-
mento del capital humano avanzado, son
algunos de los aspectos que caracterizan
el escenario chileno actual en materia de
investigacin, mbito en donde las uni-
versidades van a la vanguardia.
Ven a investigar a la UC
La Pontificia Universidad Catlica de
Chile (UC) es una de las universidades
ms importantes de Chile y Latinoam-
rica. Fue fundada el 21 de junio de 1888,
posee 18 facultades distribuidas en 4
campus en Santiago y un Campus re-
gional, localizado en el sur de del pas.
La investigacin est presente en todas
las reas de la Universidad, con 35 doc-
torados que incluyen desde Artes hasta
Neurociencias. Ms de 900 alumnos
(20% de ellos extranjeros) se encuen-
tran cursando estos programas, que ya
han graduado a ms de 1.000 doctores
a lo largo de su historia. De esta forma,
la UC ha contribuido a crear una masa
crtica de investigadores dentro y fuera
de Chile.
A travs de su liderazgo en la investi-
gacin y de sus programas de postgra-
do, la UC ha tenido una considerable
influencia en la cultura y la ciencia del
pas, lo que la ha transformado en un
importante centro de investigacin en
ciencias sociales, ciencias naturales,
salud, economa, agricultura, filosofa,
teologa, artes y letras. Sus actividades
de investigacin permiten apoyar pro-
gramas de doctorado y crear un estimu-
lante ambiente educativo e intelectual.

Caractersticas de los doctorados UC
Requisitos de admisin
Para postular a un Programa de Doc-
torado, se requiere estar en posesin
de los grados acadmicos de Licencia-
do o (equivalente) y/o Magster. Cada
programa de doctorado cuenta con
su propio calendario de admisin, que
se puede consultar directamente en
la web de cada programa a travs del
link www.doctorados.uc.cl
Estructura de los programas
Programas de 6 a 8 semestres que
contemplan la realizacin de cursos
obligatorios y optativos, adems de
un Examen de Candidatura, actividad
acadmica en que se evala el cono-
cimiento y la capacidad de anlisis
crtico que tiene el alumno respecto
de su rea del saber. La aprobacin
del Examen de Candidatura habilita
al alumno como Candidato a Doctor
para continuar el desarrollo de su tra-
bajo de tesis.
El ao acadmico
El ao acadmico en Chile comienza
en marzo y termina en diciembre. Ene-
ro y febrero corresponden a los meses
de vacaciones de verano. El primer
semestre acadmico va desde marzo
hasta julio, seguido por dos semanas
de vacaciones de invierno. El segundo
semestre comienza en agosto y se ex-
tiende hasta diciembre.
Financiamiento
Ms del 90% de los alumnos de Doc-
torados UC cuenta con algn tipo de
beca de cubre sus estudios y gastos
de manutencin.
Internacionalizacin
La UC cuenta con numerosos conve-
nios de cooperacin con universida-
des de prestigio internacional. En este
contexto, Doctorados UC promueve
la internacionalizacin de la investi-
gacin y la cooperacin internacional
a travs de la realizacin de tesis en
cotutela con otras universidades, pa-
santas de investigacin, profesores
visitantes y otras acciones conjuntas
o de movilidad. Actualmente ms del
20% de los alumnos de Doctorados
UC son extranjeros, en su mayora
provenientes de Sudamrica, Europa
y Norteamrica.
Respaldo institucional
Considerada como la Universidad n-
mero uno de Chile y la segunda de La-
tinoamrica

, la UC cuenta con el mxi-
mo nivel de acreditacin institucional (7
aos) que puede otorgar la Comisin
Nacional de Acreditacin CNA-Chile.
Esta acreditacin abarca todas las reas
evaluadas por la Comisin: gestin insti-
tucional, docencia conducente a ttulo,
docencia de postgrado, investigacin y
vinculacin con el medio.

Oportunidades de nanciamiento
Existen diversas fuentes de financiamiento externas e internas desde donde se
pueden obtener becas para estudios de doctorado en la UC, as como tambin para
la realizacin de estadas de investigacin y cotutelas en universidades extranjeras
de primer nivel.
1. Becas externas
Entre las principales fuentes de financiamiento se encuentran organizaciones ex-
ternas de cooperacin acadmica, agencias gubernamentales de cooperacin y
programas de movilidad y cooperacin acadmica internacional, tales como:
- Comisin Nacional de Investigacin Cientfica y Tecnolgica (CONICYT)
- Agencia de Cooperacin Internacional del Gobierno de Chile (AGCI)
- Organizacin de Estados Americanos (OEA)
- Programa de Becas de Movilidad Estudiantil y Acadmica de la Alianza del Pacfi-
co (Chile, Colombia, Per y Mxico)
2. Becas internas
A su vez, la UC, a travs de su Vicerrectora de Investigacin (VRI), cuenta con
mecanismos internos de apoyo para sus alumnos de doctorado, tanto para
financiar sus estudios como para realizar actividades complementarias de in-
ternacionalizacin.
2.1. Becas y benecios de manutencin y liberacin de arancel
Becas de ayudante e instructor be-
cario: Libera del 90% del arancel y
ofrece financiamiento para la manu-
tencin de alumnos de doctorado
que inician sus estudios o que hayan
aprobado su Examen de Candidatu-
ra e iniciado su trabajo de tesis. Su
apertura y cierre se coordina con el
periodo de postulacin de la Beca
para Estudios de Doctorado en Chile
de Conicyt.
Beneficio de residencia para estu-
diantes de doctorado: Libera del
100% del pago del arancel a los alum-
nos que han terminado de inscribir
todos los crditos de su Programa
de Doctorado, incluyendo los de la
Tesis, y que an tengan pendiente la
finalizacin de esta.
Seguro de salud: La universidad ofre-
ce pagar hasta el noveno semestre
de permanencia de sus alumnos de
doctorado que no cuenten con co-
bertura mdica, mediante un seguro
colectivo que cubre en gran parte las
necesidades bsicas en caso de en-
fermedad o accidente.
Premio a la excelencia en tesis: Re-
conoce y estimula la investigacin
desarrollada por los alumnos de doc-
torado, cuyas tesis representan un
aporte a la proyeccin de las ciencias,
humanidades, artes y tecnologas de
nuestro pas.
Premio a la excelencia: A los mejores
alumnos que ingresan a nuestros pro-
gramas de Doctorado se les premia
con un incentivo.

2.2. Fondos concursables para la internacionalizacin
Cotutela o codireccin en el extran-
jero: Financia pasantas preferente-
mente de cotutela con obtencin de
doble grado o grado en conjunto, en
universidades y centros de investiga-
cin extranjeros de excelencia.
Estada en el extranjero para tesistas
de doctorado: Fomenta la integracin
internacional e intercultural en las ac-
tividades de investigacin y forma-
cin de los doctorandos y postdocto-
rados UC, mediante pasantas de 1 a 6
meses en el extranjero.
Apoyo a la participacin de doctoran-
dos en congresos internacionales:
Financia parcialmente pasajes, estada
y/o inscripcin, para alumnos que pre-
senten trabajos en congresos interna-
cionales.
Profesor visitante a tesis de doctora-
do: Financia visitas de profesores de
renombre internacional que participen
en el Examen de Candidatura o defen-
sa de tesis de alumnos UC.
Apoyo a la organizacin de semina-
rios por doctorandos: Busca apoyar
la organizacin de encuentros de in-
vestigadores en temas disciplinarios
o interdisciplinarios, a travs de semi-
narios, simposios, workshops o simila-
res que sean organizados por equipos
de alumnos de doctorado UC.
Beca Universidad Catlica - Notre
Dame - Boston College: Financia
la realizacin de pasantas breves
para acadmicos y alumnos de
doctorado que quieran consolidar
proyectos y actividades de inves-
tigacin y/o docencia, en las tres
instituciones asociadas.
Concurso tesis en 3 minutos (3MT
UC):Se trata de un competencia en
donde los alumnos de doctorado
tienen tres minutos para presentar
un discurso en ingls sobre tu tesis,
demostrando dominio de habilida-
des de comunicacin efectiva de la
investigacin.

A Doctorate in Chile
Chile is located in the southwestern cor-
ner of South America, between the An-
des and the Pacific Ocean. Its long and
narrow territory stretches from the Atac-
ama Desert in the north (the driest in the
world) to the glaciers of Patagonia in the
south. It is one of the most secure and
stable countries in Latin America, and
home to 17 million people.
The level of Chiles academic institutions
makes it an attractive country to visit,
study and research. This is reflected in
the steady increase of foreign students
and their student mobility in Higher Edu-
cation Institutions.
Natural Laboratories, increased invest-
ment in science and technology, plus the
enhancement of innovation, partnership
between the public and private sectors
and the emphasis on advanced human
capital growth are some of the aspects
that characterize the current stage of re-
search, an area where universities are at
the forefront.
Research in UC
Pontificia Universidad Catlica de Chile
(UC) is one of the top universities in Chile
and Latin America. It was founded on
June 21, 1888, and has 18 schools spread
over 4 campuses in Santiago and one
regional campus, located in the south of
the country.
Research is present in all areas of the
University, with 35 doctoral programs
ranging from Arts to Neuroscience. More
than 900 students (20% from abroad)
are enrolled in these programs, which
have graduated more than 1,000 doc-
tors throughout their history. As a result,
the UC has helped to create a critical
mass of researchers.
The University leadership in research and

natural sciences, health, economy,
agriculture, philosophy, theology, arts
and letters. In addition, the research
activities allow for the support of
doctoral programs and create a

Admission Requirements
To apply for a Doctoral Program, it is
required to hold a Bachelor degree (or
equivalent) and/or a Master. Each Pro-
gram has its own system of admission
and timing of applications that can be
accessed directly from the web site of
each program through the link:

Structure of the Programs
Programs are 6-8 semesters, including
obligatory and elective courses. Ad-
ditionally, students must complete a
Candidacy Examination, an academic
activity that assesses the knowledge
and critical thinking skills that the stu-
dent has regarding their field of study.
The approval of the Candidacy Exam-
ination enables the student and Doc-
toral candidate to continue the devel-
opment of their thesis work.
The Academic Year
The academic year in Chile runs from
March through December; January and
February are summer vacation months.
The first academic semester runs from
March through July. There are two weeks
of Winter Break in mid-July and the sec-
ond academic semester begins in Au-
gust and ends in December.
Funding
Over 90% of UC doctoral students have
some type of scholarship that covers
their studies and living expenses.
Internationalization
The UC has many cooperation agree-
ments with internationally renowned
universities. In this context, the Univer-
sity promotes the internationalization of
research and international cooperation
through co-tutelle or co-supervised the-
sis in other universities, research intern-
ships, visiting professors and other joint
actions or mobility. Currently over 20%
of UC doctoral students are foreigners,
mostly, coming from South America, Eu-
rope and North America.
Institutional Support
Considered number one in Chile and
second in Latin America, the UC has the
highest level of institutional accredita-
tion (7 years) that can be granted from
the National Accreditation Commission
CNA-Chile. This accreditation covers
all areas assessed by the Commission:
institutional management, teaching,
postgraduate teaching, research and
social connectedness.

Funding Opportunities
There are several funding opportunities, both external and internal, for doctoral stud-
ies at UC, as well as for conducting research stays abroad.
1. External Scholarships
Among the main sources of funding are external academic cooperation organiza-
tions, government agencies, cooperation and mobility programs and international
academic cooperation. Such as:

The UC, through its Vice-Rectory for Research (VRI), has internal mechanisms to
support doctoral students, to finance both their studies and related internation-
alization activities.
2.1. Doctoral Scholarships and Benets
Scholarship for Fellow Assistants
and Instructors: Covers 90% of the
fees and provides funding for the
support of doctoral students who be-
gin their studies or who have passed
their Candidacy Examination and ini-
tiated the thesis work.
Residence Benefit for Doctoral
Students: Covers 100% of fees for
students who have completed the
registration for all credits in their doc-
toral program, including the thesis,
but still have pending completion of
the thesis.
Health Insurance: The university of-
fers coverage up to the ninth semes-
ter for doctoral students who do not
have health insurance. It is a group in-
surance that covers much of the basic
needs in case of illness or accident.
Award for Excellence in Thesis:
Recognizes and encourages the re-
search conducted by doctoral stu-
dents whose dissertations represent
a contribution to the projection of
the sciences, humanities, arts and
technology in our country.
Award of Excellence: The top stu-
dents entering our doctoral programs
are rewarded with an incentive.

2.2. Competitive Funding for Internationalization
International co-tutelle or co-super-
vision: Finances internships, prefera-
bly under co-tutelle, to obtain a dual or
joint degree during the development
of the thesis, in universities and for-
eign research centers of excellence.
Stay abroad: Promotes international
and intercultural integration in research
and training of UC doctoral students
and postdocs, through internships of
1-6 months abroad.
Supporting the participation of doc-
toral students in international con-
ferences: partially finances airfare
and/or registration for students who
present papers at international con-
ferences.
Visiting Professor at a Doctoral Dis-
sertation: Finances visits of interna-
tionally renowned faculty who partici-
pate in the Candidacy Examination or
thesis defense of doctoral UC students.
Support for Doctoral Seminars: Sup-
ports the organization of meetings of
researchers in disciplinary or interdisci-
plinary topics through seminars, sym-
posia, workshops, etc. organized by UC
doctoral students.
Pontificia Universidad Catlica - No-
tre Dame - Boston College Scholar-
ship: Financing short internships for
scholars and doctoral students who
want to consolidate projects and re-
search and/or teaching in the three
partner institutions.
3 Minutes Thesis Competition (3MT
UC): This is a competition in which
doctoral students have three min-
utes to present a speech in English
on their thesis topic, demonstrating
mastery of efective communication
skills of research, explaining their
work thesis in a language appropriate
to a lay audience.
