Undulating Flight Modes

Starlings Sturnus Vulgaris are small to meduim-sized passerine birds.

Toward the latter half of the day, Starlings demonstrate fantastic

flight characteristics. Their intermittent bounding and undulating
flight modes are the subjects of both leisure observation and in

debth scientific research the world over.
2ND LEVEL (2)
In the evenings, the Starlings quit feeding and take to the air. They
GROUND LEVEL (G)
start out in groups for some time, eventually merging into a single
entity, a gross structure of components. As the structure undulates, LOWER LEVEL (L)
flight morphology takes place. Zones of the structure grow in
component number and lessen in distance between components,
resulting in a density gradient.

What looks chaotic is in fact completely controlled. A collision has

yet to be observed.

(A) Bounding (flap-bounding) Most species of birds do not flap their wings continuously during flight.
Rather, they exhibit one of two intermittent flight patterns: flap-gliding and
flap-bounding. Mathematical models predict that flap-bounding is
energetically cheaper than continuous flapping flight at high speeds,
while flap-gliding is more efficient than continuous flapping at low speeds.

(B) Undulating (flap-gliding)
