At the end of the 20" century, a new kind of poisonous waste was found worldwide. This rubbish is called electronic waste or e-waste. E-waste refers to all modern electronic machines that have become outdated. One example is the computer which becomes obsolete every two years due to the rapid advancement in technology. However, computers are not the only electronic hardware which is becoming outdated. A change from the current analog signal televisions to digital high-definition televisions would result in the former being inoperable. In 2005 alone between 1.5 and 1.9 million tonnes of computers, televisions, video cassette recorders, monitors, cell phones, and other equipment were discarded in the United States of America. If all sources of electronic waste were tallied, it could total 50 million tonnes a year worldwide. E-waste eventually ends up in landfills, despite a growing number of laws that prohibit it. This is because dumping of e-waste may leak toxics such as lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, beryllium and others into the ground. In addition to toxics, e-waste contains high amount of silver, gold, and other valuable metals. These metals are highly efficient conductors of electricity and thus can be sold. This makes recycling of e-waste attractive to people. For example, gold is recycled from old computer motherboards. Asia and Africa are the major dumping grounds for e-waste. China in particular, has long been the world’s electronic graveyard. According to Basel Asian Network (BAN), a group that opposes shipments of hazardous waste to developing nations, thousands of families in Guiyu, China are engaged in dangerous practices like burning computer wire to obtain copper, or using powerful acid to remove gold from circuit boards. In poor areas of New Delhi, India, informal e-waste processing is a common household business. Lead from circuit boards is smelted in the same pots used for cooking, which is a potentially deadly practice. China had specifically prohibited the import of electronic waste in 2000, but that had not stopped the trade, E-waste is still being smuggled into China, and this activity has diverted to other parts of Asia, E-waste is increasingly dumped in West African countries like Ghana, Nigeria and Ivory Coast. In China the air near some electronics recycling operations contains the highest amount of dioxins measured anywhere in the world. Dioxins are released if PVC-coated wires are burned to extract copper. They may harm the endocrine and immune function in humans. If e-waste is buried in landfills, incinerated or improperly dismantled, the elements and compounds in it can leach into soil or scatter as particles in the air. Toxics from e-waste are harmful to mankind. Lead for instance, harms the kidney and reproductive system, and can affect a child’s mental development. Inhaling hexavalent chromium can damage liver and kidney, increase risk of cancer, and cause asthmatic bronchitis. Beryllium dust causes lung cancer, and mercury is linked to brain and kidney damage. 1119/2 [Lihat sebelah SULIT 15 20 25 30° 35 26 27 28 29 SULIT ll 1119/2 Dumping e-waste in countries like China and India is not the best solution. This is because in a global economy, things come in a full circle. For example, Chinese-made jewellery in the U.S. market is found to contain high amounts of lead. Ultimately, 40 developed countries that have shipped out their e-waste are getting it back in the form of contaminated products.
