NBA's Against The Spread Ratings As Of 3/16/2014

Weve definitely seen some big surprises this season in the NBA. Lots of teams we
expected to protagonist in their respective conferences are tanking, while others
have been over performing. Judging from the results weve seen up to now in the
NBA, almost one month prior to the end of the regular season, lets try to break down
some facts about the most significant teams in the league.
First of all, we have seen teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles
Lakers, which were projected to at least make the playoffs, tanking badly. The Bucks
are dead last in the NBA, with an astonishingly bad 13-54 record. Milwaukee also
has a 29-37-1 against the spread record in total. The Los Angeles Lakers are battling
to avoid the humiliation of ranking last in the Western Conference. Thy currently hold
a 22-44 record and they have set several negative records this season, including the
biggest-margin loss in franchise history. LA has a 34-31-1 against the spread record.
On the other hand, teams like the Toronto Raptors, the Chicago Bulls, the Charlotte
Bobcats and the Portland Trail Blazers are doing better than projected. In fact, the
Portland Trail Blazers were considered one of the apocalypses of this current
season. Whilst Damian Lillards company lost a few seeds in the West and currently
stands at the fifth position with a 43-24 record, the Blazers emerged as one of the
favorites for the title in the West.

The Bulls were projected to tank after Derrick Rose went down with an injury and
especially after Luol Deng got traded away. However, they have managed to climb to
the fourth seed in the East, holding a 37-29 record, while they are just half a game
behind the Toronto Raptors. Toronto is has also been impressive this season. DeMar
DeRozan earned a spot in the All-Star game thanks to his superb outputs while Kyle
Lowry averted a trade, which the GM of the team Masai Ujiri was considering, thanks
to his great outputs. The Raptors have a 39-25-1 against the spread record and a 3728 winning record for the third spot in the East.
Finally, the powerhouses we expected to dominate in each conference confirmed
their potential. The San Antonio Spurs lead the West for yet another season, holding
a league-best 50-16 record. The Oklahoma City Thunder follow right behind with a
48-18 record and the emerging Los Angeles Clippers have climbed to the third seed
of the tough Western Conference, with a 48-20 record and 39-31-1 against the
spread.
In the East, the Indiana Pacers have been leading the conference almost throughout
the 2013-2014 campaign, currently holding a 49-17 record and the Miami Heat are
monitoring their opponents three games behind, 45-19 up to now in the season.
As we get ready for the playoffs, things at the top of the two conferences seem
almost clear. The Heat and the Pacers will be the two top teams in the East while the
Spurs, the Thunder and the Clips will most probably fight for the top three seeds. The
Blazers and the Houston Rockets follow not that far away. We can also expect the
Memphis Grizzlies to gain one or maybe two spots by the end of the regular season.
The Phoenix Suns and the New York Knicks will most probably fight all the way till
the end to gain a playoff ticket.
