MACKLEMORE AND RYAN LEWIS FT. FENCES
Now he just wanted to act like them He just wanted to rap like him Us as rappers underestimate the power and the effects that we have on these kids Blunt passed, ash in a tin, pack being pushed, harassed by the feds The fact of it is most people that rap like this talkin' about some s*** they haven't lived Surprise, you know the drill Trapped in a box, declined record sales Follow the formula violence, drugs, and, s** sells
So we try to sound like someone else This is not Californication There's no way to glorify this pavement Syrup, Percocet, and an eighth a day will leave you broke, depressed, and emotionally vacant Despite how Lil Wayne lives It's not conducive to being creative And I know 'cause he's my favorite And I know 'cause I was off that same mix Rationalize the s*** that I'd try after I listen to dedication But he's an alien, I'd sip that s***, pass out or play Playstation

OTHERSIDE ANALYSIS
MY INTERPRETATION
In todays society, drugs and alcohol use is advertised through music by several rappers. Because of the way these rappers advertise drugs and alcohol in their songs, all of their fans come to believe it is okay to do these things whether its illegal or not. The lyrics of this song explain that because of the advertisement of drugs and alcohol in music, more and more people each day are trying different things because that is what their idol taught them. Todays society makes it seem as if drugs and alcohol is the new normal and if youre not participating in such activities, then you arent a cool kid. To me, it seems as if this song was written to spread a message about how drugs and alcohol are not something to mess with because they can take a toll on your life. I believe the speaker is trying to portray the message to help stop the spreading of illegal drug usage based on his own personal experience. This song is important to me, because I feel it contains such a strong message that I wish people would actually take into account. There are so many drugs and alcohol related deaths in todays society, it is almost sickening. To see or hear on the news that there are kids my age who have died trying drugs for the first time or who have overdosed on something they have never even heard of before that night is quite upsetting. This song is a great attempt at trying to put an end to that. It is safe to assume that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis created this track in hopes of spreading the message to end illegal usage of drugs and alcohol, rather than promoting them just as almost 90% of rappers today do.
OTHERSIDE ANALYSIS
ACTUAL MEANING
Otherside is a song written based on personal experience. Ben Macklemore Haggerty chose to write this song in the hopes of changing peoples outlook on drugs. Before his career kicked off, Macklemore got into drugs and got seriously addicted. He eventually sought out treatment and made the decision to write the song after he finished his treatment and committed to staying clean off drugs. He wrote this song with the hopes of getting people to change their thoughts on drugs. He wanted to stand out from other rappers who specifically promote drugs and alcohol usage in their music, and instead wrote about the negative impacts that drugs could potentially have in your life.
I'm scared to get close and I hate being alone. I long for that feeling to not feel at all. The higher I get, the lower I'll sink. I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim.
Suicide in todays society seems to be becoming more and more of an issue each day. I feel that this portion of the song Can You Feel My Heart? written by Jordan Keith Attwood Fish, Oliver Scott Sykes, and Lee David Malia, is a perfect example of what goes through the typical suicidal persons mind each day they fight their battles. I believe this song serves as a message attempting to spread suicide awareness. It proves that those who are suicidal, for the most part, feel as if part of them is being defeated by themselves. They feel as if the best kind of feeling is one that allows them to forget about everything, and they feel self-conscious about many things in life. This song shows that some people may even feel so low that if something good is to ever happen to them, bad things will become the only outcome. They feel as if there is no such outcome of happiness. The last line of this specific section of the song proves that the inner demons or fears will always end up defeating them because they are unbeatable, or so they think. This song is important to me because I feel that in a world such as the one we live in today, no one deserves to ever feel alone or like they have no one. I feel that everybody should feel comfortable enough to talk to anyone if they are experiencing suicidal thoughts; I believe it to be absolutely absurd for anyone to think so low of their life or of themselves to the point where they believe death is the only way out. There is no reason in this world good enough for someone to take their own life, and I feel that this song is dedicated to those who feel that way. In my mind, the speaker is singing these lyrics to let suicidal people know that they are not alone and that no matter what, there is always someone out there who feels the same or who is willing to talk. I believe that the speaker is putting himself out there as someone willing to share his own story and feelings with those who feel the same.
This song is about the speaker attempting to find different ways to escape his problems, whether its through drugs, alcohol, or people. All the questions he asks throughout the verses are directed either at something or at someone. He is trying to find someone or maybe even something capable of fixing him. The speaker in the song talks about how he has had many attempts of drug use and alcohol use to get rid of his demons. The higher I get, the lower Ill sink represents the times where drug usage causes him to think too much and only brings him down. I cant drown my demons, they know how to swim represents how the speaker attempts to drown his sorrows in alcohol, but these attempts all fail because even while intoxicated, his demons still appear.
She sits up high surrounded by the sun One million branches and she loves every one "Mom and dad, did you search for me? I've been up here so long I'm going crazy!"
And as the sun went down we ended up on the ground I heard the train shake the windows You screamed over the sound And as we own this night I put your body to the test with mine This love was out of control 3-2-1 where did it go?
Now don't be crazy Yes now of course you can stay here. Been in a touring band for going on ten years. "Big deal," she said, "I guess you're official." I only said it 'cause I know what it's like to feel
Burned out It gets you down, We've all been there sometimes But tonight I'll make you feel beautiful once again
And as the sun went down we ended up on the ground I heard the train shake the windows You screamed over the sound (over the sound) And as we own this night I put your body to the test with mine This love was out of control 3-2-1 where did it go?
If I were you, I'd put that away See, you're just wasted And thinking about the past again Darling you'll be okay
To me, this song represents the rough life of a young teenage girl. Throughout the song, her struggles are briefly explained. Towards the end of the song the speaker tries to convince this girl that everything is going to be alright. She responds, If you were me, you'd do the same. 'Cause I can't take anymore, I'll draw the shades and close the door. Everything's not alright and I would rather... This statement proves that throughout the girls life, she has faced numerous struggles of which some were never resolved. The beginning lyrics back up the previous statement by proving she wasnt close with her parents. (i.e. Mom and dad, did you search for me? I've been up here so long I'm going crazy!) This statement suggests that maybe the girls parents werent around and she would wonder where they were. This song is important to me because I feel that everyone should try and have an established relationship with their family; because family is typically there for you whenever you are in need of help. Usually, family is always willing to listen to you and help you get through youre problems as long as you are willing to discuss your problems and seek for help.
Vic Fuentes said in an interview when asked about Pierce the Veils song Hold on Till May, A girl I used to date once told me that her parents neglected her as a child. She remembered climbing this tree in her backyard and hiding from them just to see if they would look for her, or even notice that she was gone. I always thought it was such a sad story and I wrote this song for her. It also talks about the ups and downs in a relationship that weve had recently.
Now, son, I'm only telling you this Because life can do terrible things You'll learn, one day, I'll hope and I'll pray, That God shows you differently. She said, "Boy can I tell you a terrible thing? It seems that I'm sick and I've only got weeks. Please, don't be sad now, I really believe, You were the greatest thing that ever happened to me."
Many songs today serve as storytelling devices. In this song, the story is about a young man and woman who fall instantly in love. The story is being told by the speaker, to his son. Throughout the song, the speaker mentions to his son to be careful because he believes, based on his experiences, that in life, only terrible things may arise. The story is of how the speaker met his sons mom, and throughout the song the story continues. It explains that the two were young and in love and eventually the song leads to why it is that the speaker is telling his son to be careful in life. The reasoning behind his belief that life leads to terrible things is the event of his wifes death. His wife became sick shortly after giving birth to their child and passed away; thus, is the reasoning for the speaker to come to believe that all things in life end terribly. I find this song interesting because from my experiences, not everything in life ends badly. I believe that if something seems as if it is ending terribly, you have to look at it positively so you do not succumb to the negativity such as in this song.
The reasoning behind the writing of this song was to demonstrate how something that can seem so surreal and perfect and indestructible is capable of changing at a moments notice; this may not necessarily be for the better, either. It also was meant to promote the message that you should never take anything in life for granted, for it can slip out of your fingertips at any given moment or even change in a way that will leave you wishing you would have been more appreciative.
Nobody's gonna love you if You can't display a way to capture this Nobody's gonna hold your hand And guide you through No it's up for you to understand Nobody's gonna feel your pain When all is done And it's time for you to walk away So when you have today You should say all that you have to say
I believe that the message in this song is to demonstrate that not everything in your life is going to be done for you. There is a time and point in life where you need to learn how to get up and do things on your own, because there will be moments where no one is there to hold your hand through everything. It also says that not everyone will understand the way you feel pain and how you think and interpret things, so sometimes you will have to walk away. This song promotes the message to always speak whats on your mind, because if you dont, it might be too late. So while you have the opportunity to speak up and say how you really feel, you should utilize it, because who knows when that opportunity is going to disappear.
The band wrote this song to promote the idea of learning to love yourself first before you can love anyone else. In the song, the speaker is really saying that nobody is going to help you through all your little problems in life. This means that you need to learn to help yourself and you have got to learn to love yourself before anybody else can love you. Nobody's going to be there to hold your hand and guide you through everything in life. You have to grow up and learn how to do things on your own and always stand up for yourself; be strong.
All I want is a place to call my own, To mend the hearts of everyone Who feels alone (whoa) You know to keep your hopes up high, And your head down low.
I believe this song was written as a call out to those in the world who feel that they are alone and dont have a place in this world. The speaker sings that hes there for them and feels the same way. By saying Keep your hopes up high, and your head down low, the speaker means that you always want to keep high hopes in your head but keep your head low just in case. This statement proves to the listeners that if you keep trying, youll eventually find your place in this world and that will lead to happiness.
The intention of this song was to prove the speaker is just like his fans; he wants a place to belong, not just for himself but for everyone like him who's ever had to suffer, been made to be something they're not, or had their heart broken. You don't have to be alone because there's a place for you if you look long and hard enough. Just be humble in keeping your head low but on the inside keep hope that you'll find that place and be happy.
Baby, can you hear me? When I'm crying out for you I'm scared oh, so scared But when you're near me I feel like I'm standing with an army Of men armed with weapons, hey, oh
When you say you love me Know I love you more And when you say you need me Know I need you more Boy, I adore you, I adore you
I love lying next to you I could do this for eternity, you and me Were meant to be in holy matrimony God knew exactly what he was doing When he led me to you
This song represents a love story. In this specific portion of the song, the speaker sings to her lover about how when shes scared, she knows he will always be there to protect her and make her feel safe. She feels that his protection is equivalent to an army of defensive men. This also reinforces the traditional gender stereotypes of relationships where the men were supposed to love and protect their lover. The speaker sings this song directly to her lover in attempt to make sure he knows how great her love for him is. In the chorus, she insists that she loves him more because of how he treats her right and she needs him more than he needs her; she adores him.
Although this song wasnt written by Miley, she sings it with strong emotion which makes her fans believe she actually wrote it. The reasoning behind Mileys strong emotion is her ex -fiance, Liam. This song reveals how she really felt about him before they called off their engagement. In the song she spells out her unconditional love. She not only sings about loving him, but later in the song addresses their engagement by saying they were meant to be in holy matrimony, and that God knew exactly what He was doing when he put them together. Despite being so you, Miley seemed rather confident that she and Liam would get married and live happily ever after. This song only makes their split even more tragic.
To me, this song references long distance relationships. Perhaps the speaker is singing to his lover who is not near him at the moment. He sings out to her that she shouldnt be sad because hell be home before she knows it. He says that hell be there to comfort her in her dreams. By saying Miles away I can still feel you lay your head down on my embrace he means that although they are far apart, he can still feel her presence there with him. This song is important to me because it proves to me that there is hope for all relationships in the future. No matter how far you are away from your loved ones, you will never stop thinking about them and they will also always have you in their thoughts.
In this song, Shayley Bourget is talking about his long-distance relationship with his girlfriend and how absence is making the heart grow fonder. She's crying because he's leaving, "Pretty little lady with the swollen eyes would you show them to me." He's telling her to stay with him because he has so much to offer her, "I know I'm not that perfect but just stay awhile maybe then you will see." "Miles away I can still feel you lay your head down on my embrace" Suggests that even though he's miles away on tour, when he goes to bed at night, he still is able to imagine her laying her head down on his and that brings him comfort.
PERFECT PINK
Made a wrong turn, once or twice Dug my way out, blood and fire Bad decisions, that's alright Welcome to my silly life
Mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood Miss "no way, it's all good", it didn't slow me down Mistaken, always second guessing Underestimated, look, I'm still around Pretty, pretty please Don't you ever, ever feel Like youre less than, less than perfect. Pretty, pretty please If you ever, ever feel Like youre nothing You are perfect to me.
You're so mean,
When you talk about yourself, you are wrong. Change the voices in your head, Make them like you instead. So complicated, Look happy, you'll make it! Filled with so much hatred,
PERFECT CONT.
The whole world's scared, so I swallow the fear The only thing I should be drinking is an ice cold beer So cool in lying and we try, try, try but we try too hard And it's a waste of my time. Done looking for the critics, cause they're everywhere They don't like my jeans, they don't get my hair Exchange ourselves and we do it all the time Why do we do that, why do I do that (why do I do that)?
Pretty, pretty please, Don't you ever, ever feel Like you're less than, less than perfect Pretty, pretty please, If you ever, ever feel Like you're nothing, you are perfect to me
Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel Like you're nothing, you are perfect to me.
This song is a message to people everywhere who are self-conscious about themselves in any way, whatsoever. In the song, the speaker explains that no matter what you feel or what you do, there is always going to be someone out there who thinks you are perfect and will always love you no matter what. This song is important to me because the lyrics explain exactly how I feel. Never in my life have I felt perfect and Ive always been a little harsh on myself; I have never looked at myself in the mirror and felt completely satisfied with my life. Ironically, though, I tell people who feel the same way as me that they should never look down on themselves and always keep their chin up. In a way, this song has helped me realize the truth; it doesnt matter what people think of you, as long as you love yourself for who you are, you will be happy. And no matter what, there is always someone out there who cares about you, whether you can see it or not.
Pink's song is anti-depression and cutting. At one part in the song she say's done waiting for the critics because theyre everywhere. What Pink is saying here is that she's done changing herself to be perfect for the critics, because shes perfect to herself. She also says change the voices in your head... make them like you. She is saying have more self-esteem because it doesn't matter who doesn't like you it only matters that you like you. Pink also says that the world is scared so she swallows the fear; the world is scared that no one likes how they look. Pink says we try too hard to be perfect when we already are. In the chorus, she explains that if any of you think youre less than perfect, that is not true because you are perfect the just the way you are.
The rain is falling on my window pane But we are hiding in a safer place Under covers staying dry and warm You give me feelings that I adore
They start in my toes Make me crinkle my nose Wherever it goes I always know That you make me smile Please stay for a while now just take your time Wherever you go But what am I gonna say:
BUBBLY CONT.
I've been asleep for a while now You tuck me in just like a child now 'Cause every time you hold me in your arms I'm comfortable enough to feel your warmth
It starts in my soul And I lose all control When you kiss my nose The feeling shows 'Cause you make me smile, Baby, just take your time Now holdin' me tight
BUBBLY CONT.
The 'tingly' feeling she gets in a special place is similar to the giddy or heart fluttering feeling you only experience from someone who just makes you feel special in your own little unique way. When she is with this guy she feels like a little girl again. She feels secure in his arms, like no harm can be done to her, and it gives her a protective feeling of warmth. This guy gives her feelings that no one else in the world can do, and she can feel it in her soul. At the end of the song she is saying that wherever he goes is alright because she knows how she feels about him and it makes her smile. This song is important to me because it reminds me of my boyfriend. It reminds me of something I would say to him (Wherever you go, I always know. 'Cause you make me smile, Even just for a while.) before he leaves in less than a week for his basic training for the Air Force in San Antonio. It makes me realize that I shouldnt be sad when hes gone because I know that wherever he goes, hell always have a place in my heart.
"Bubbly" isn't about anybody specific, Caillat explains, "It's about the feelings you get when you have a crush on someone and they make you make smile all the time; they give you butterflies and you just adore everything they do." She also adds, "I didn't have a crush on anyone, and its always fun to have a crush. So I was just thinking about missing those feelings and wanting them."
