Wire Rope
Swaging capacity up to 38mm. The Chain Man Ltd has been supplying and distributing wire rope since 1990. Apart from the distribution of wire rope, our personnel can supply guidance to users on the correct usage and selection of wire rope. We offer a service ranging from the supply of cut lengths through to wire ropes tted with any of our full range of attachments and a complete rigging service. We are able to source a wide range of alternative rope types to suit your requirements. Weights and typical minimum break loads are to be used as guides only to assist with the selection of an appropriate rope when taking into account suitable safety factors. Manufacturer test certicates are available on request.
SEctIoN ONE
Strand Construction
Each strand in a steel wire rope consists of one or more layers of wire laid in a spiral round a centre or king wire (except some marine ropes, in which the centre is of bre.) The simplest construction consists of one layer of 6 wires of equal diameter round a king wire, while others may consist of up to 4 or more layers of wire. Constructions of steel wire rope are expressed in simple numerical forms showing the number of strands x number of wires per strand, and further simplied by being grouped into families known, for example, as the 6 x 19 Group, (all of which have 6 strands of between 15 and 25 wires) and 6 x 36 group. (6 strands of between 26 and 41 wires). Cross Lay - successively layers are not in the same pitch, so that the wires of one layer will cross over wires in the layer below. Although many cross lay constructions have the advantage that all the wires may be of the same diameter, the wires are not as well supported as in equal lay ropes, and damage at the points where wires in two layers cross may reduce rope life. Every time a wire rope bends each wire moves slightly in relation to its neighbours, therefore the sizes and dispositions of the wires are very important to the performance and life of the rope. One distinction can clearly be drawn here between two different types of strand construction, Equal Lay and Cross Lay. Equal Lay - all layers of wire are in spirals of the same pitch, so that each wire supports or is supported by its neighbours throughout its length. These constructions are more compact, therefore have a higher density of steel than a cross lay, so the strand is not easily crushed out of shape and the wires do not have points of relatively high contact pressure.
SEctIoN ONE
Preforming
Preforming is a process by which each strand is shaped to the helical prole it will adopt in the nished rope. If a preformed rope is unlaid (i.e. the strands and wires are separated) it will be seen that the elements all have their set helical forms, and the rope can easily be laid up again. A Preformed rope had the following advantages: 1) The rope is dead and is therefore more easily handled. 2) When the rope is cut, the cut ends do not automatically unlay (i.e. spring open). The process of Preforming is carried out by a Preforming Head, through which the strands pass immediately before the Closing Head, in which they are formed into the wire rope.
Galvanising
To protect the rope from corrosion, a coating of Zinc can be applied to the individual wires. Wire Mills apply this zinc coating using the Hot Dip Process, after which the wires are further drawn to the nished size. This is known as Drawn Galvanising, and provided an intimate bond between the Zinc and the Steel. The alternative is Finished Galvanising, in which the Zinc is applied after the wire is fully drawn, and although the Zinc coating may be thicker it is more likely to ake in service.
Cores
The central core is a steel wire rope maintains the circular cross- section of the rope by supporting the strands around it, and the core may be of two classes:
Fibre Cores:, composed of vegetable bres (e.g.) Manila, Jute or more commonly Sisal) or man made bre (such as When a wire rope bends, each wire moves in relation to its Polypropylene), which has the advantage of being more neighbours, and lubrication helps to reduce friction between resistant to deterioration. Fibre cores are often referred to as F.C or F.M.C ( Fibre Main Core), and are impregnated with a wires. It also helps to combat corrosion, external and internal. suitable preserving lubricant. Specially-selected lubricants have to be applied during the Steel Cores: may be Wire Strand Core - W.S.C - (usually in manufacture of the wire rope, the choice of lubricant depending to some extent on the work the rope will be doing. ropes of a diameter less than 8mm - 5/16) or a complete The lubricant helps protect the wires from corrosion during rope in itself (an independent Wire Rope Core - I.W.R.C. transit and storage, resisting oxidisation and water penetration. usually of 7x7 construction - 6 strands of 7 wires round 1 strand of 7 wires). During prolonged periods of storage, and during its working life, a wire rope should be examined regularly and further The Steel Core will resist distortion when the rope is heavily lubricant or dressing may be added if necessary. This loaded, passing over relatively small diameter sheaves or pulleys, or subjected to drum crushing. Distortion may lead to dressing generally only acts as a preservative, since it will only penetrate the rope if it is applied where the rope is bent impaired running over sheaves etc, and may lead to failure over a sheave, so that the strands are open enough to allow due to unequal loading of individual wires, so where these such penetration. dangers are present a wire rope with I.W.R.C will normally give a longer fatigue life than one with F.C. It is also superior Lubricants are generally petrolatum-based and compatible in very hot working conditions, such as steel making plants, with similar petroleum jelly type lubricants. where the F.C will soon dry out and cease to support the strands. In general, a wire rope with I.W.R.C. has a breaking strength 8% higher than a similar rope with F.C.
Lubrication
SEctIoN ONE
Reels - Place a shaft horizontally through the centre of the reel, and raise the shaft after checking that the base is stable. Then pull the free end of the rope in a straight line. Alternatively, the shaft can be vertical, on a turntable, but the former method is preferred. Re-reeling - from one reel to another - avoid reverse bends i.e. feed from top of the rst reel to the top of the second, to bottom of the rst reel to bottom of the second, but never top to bottom or vice versa.
The Diameter of a wire rope is the diameter of a true circle enclosing the rope. Measurement must, therefore, be made across the maximum dimension of a wire rope with an even number of strands i.e. between the crowns of two opposite strands as in Fig.1, and not with the callipers in contact with 4 strands as in Fig.2. To be certain that the maximum dimension is measured, the callipers should be rotated around the rope. After a rope has been in use, diameter measurements correctly taken may vary. This occurs when the rope had been braided, or when it has lost its shape due to crushing, or where there has been internal corrosion or damage to the core. In all these cases the cause of the varying diameter measurements should be ascertained. With used ropes some distortion is inevitable, it is recommended that two measurements are taken at right angles to each other which will allow the mean diameter to be calculated.
Coils - Place the coil over a turntable, release the ties and pull the free end as above. Alternatively, the coil may be rolled along the ground, leaving the rope lying straight on the ground, although manhandling a long length of wire rope in a coil can be very difcult.
SEctIoN ONE
Sheave Grooves
The rope is supported in the best possible manner if the arc of contact with the groove contour can be 150 deg. This corresponds to a throat angle of 30 degrees. However, with a large eet angle or with oscillating loads, the throat angle should be larger to avoid undue wear of the rope and sheave anges. The height of the anges should be at least 1.5 times the rope diameter to prevent the rope running off the sheave. A radius 5% larger than half the rope diameter will give the longest service life of the rope.
Drum Winding
The direction in which a wire rope winds on to a drum depends on the direction of the lay of the rope. The diagrams indicate the methods used for Right Hand and Left Hand Lay ropes respectively, together with a useful means of remembering the system, using the right and the left hand.
Sheaves and pulleys should be of hard metal. Soft metal is abraded and will wear to the diameter of the wire rope being used, and may also be imprinted with the lay of that wire rope. A new rope will not t this imprint exactly, and will therefore, suffer damage. Sheaves should be checked frequently for wear and alignment. Lubrication of sheave and pulley bearings should be maintained. Use the hand to indicate the correct direction, the right hand for the Right Hand Lay rope, and the left hand for Left Hand Lay rope. The closed st represents the drum, the thumb indicates the side at which the inside end of the rope is anchored and the index nger represents the rope leading off the drum. Most ropes are supplied Right Hand Lay, but some machinery will only accept Left Hand Lay ropes, and if the latter is required it MUST be specied clearly on the order, as Right Hand Lay is always assumed if no lay is indicated. 8

*** The WLL of the RLP may be double in case of 1-leg applications provided only axial loading takes place, i.e. no bending force applied in the direction of the thread. Note: Threaded depths need to be at least 1xM for steel, 1, 25xM for cast iron and 2xM for aluminium alloy. **** Will be launched during 2004. The patented new design of the RLP makes it suitable also in applications where a conventional Lifting point would not be fully adequate. Intended to be used as a Lifting point, Lashing point or Towing attachment. Dismountable open D-ring. Enables assembly of roundsling, master link, link or hook directly onto the RLP. Hexagon-headed screw for easy assembly/disassembly by means of an ordinary wrench. RLP can rotate 360 and articulate 180. Forged in Grade 8+ material permits higher WLL than Grade 8 and DIN 580 eyebolts.
* Safety factor 4:1 ** In case of 1-leg application where loading is limited to straightloading in the direction of thread (no bending force) it is possible to use ELP with four times higher WLL than given in the table. Note: Threaded depths need to be at least 1xM for steel, 1.25xM for cast iron and 2xM for aluminium alloy. Working load limits (tonnes)

Alternative method of rating An alternative method of rating may be used for a specic lifting application. It is essential that the Working Load Limit for each single component of the sling should never be exceeded. For further information contact your Gunnebo dealer. Severe environment Grade 8+ chain and components must not be used in alkaline or acidic conditions. Comprehensive and regular examination must be carried out when using Grade 8+ equipment in severe or corrosion inducing environments. In uncertain situations consult your distributor. Plating Hot dip galvanizing or plating is not allowed outside the control of the manufacturer. Extreme temperatures The in-service temperature of the whole or part of the chain sling affects the Working Load Limit as follows: Temperature Reduction in of slings Working Load Limit -40 to +200c None +200 to +300C 10% +300 to +400C 25% Upon return to normal temperature the sling reverts to its full capacity. GrabiQ chain slings should not be used above or below these temperatures. Advice for safe use 1. Never exceed the working load limit. 2. Do not use a sling with a greater top angle than 60 from the vertical (see page 33). 3. In case of multileg home pocket loop, the angle to the vertical should not exceed 45 (see page 33, home pocket loop). 4. Do not use greater home pocket in-loop angle than 30 (see picture at left). 5. Keep a register of all slings in use. 6 Use suitable lifting equipment for each lifting operation. 7. Never lift with a twisted chain. 8. Chain slings should be shortened in the GrabiQ home pocket, never by knotting. 9. Protect the chain from sharp edges by proper padding. 10. Never point load a hook, the load should always seat correctly in the bowl of the hook. 11. Always use the correct size sling for the load, allowing for the included angle and the possibility of unequal loading. 12. The masterlink should always be able to move freely on the crane hook. 13. Avoid snatch loading at all times.
SEctIoN Two
Denition: The home pocket is the shortening pocket of the top component to which the chain is connected. Asymmetric loading conditions For unequally loaded chain slings we recommend that the Working Load Limits are determined as follows: 2-leg slings calculated as the corresponding 1-leg sling. 3- and 4-leg slings calculated as the corresponding 1-leg sling. If it is certain that two legs are equally carrying the major part of the load, then the WLL for the corresponding 2-leg sling can be allowed. 30

Thin tapes of polypropylene which are then twisted into yarn, then into strands and nally into rope. Polyprop is an inexpensive all purpose rope. Advantages/Characteristics Made from Polypropylene Good abrasion resistance. Impervious to water, petroleum products, dilute acids and alkalais. Value for money(price relative to high strength and light weight). Polypropylene laid rope is treated with U.V inhibitor to improve its U.V resistance. Uses many general purposes ideal for towing and temporary mooring ropes because it oats. Because of the low cost, polypropylene products are sometimes used for anchor warps. However, although normally satisfactory, this practise may be hazardous because of the ropes oating characteristic. It is recommended sinking ropes be used for anchor warps. Nylon ropes
Nylon is the strongest of the man made bres in common use. It has excellent shock absorbtion, is not affected by wide variations in temperature, and is very elastic, stretching up to 46% before breaking. Due to its high stretch however, it is prone to internal stretch abrasion (which is caused as the bres scissor over one another as the rope extends and contracts) with hard use. Nylon is 1.14 times more dense than water and therefore sinks. Nylon makes an excellent anchor warp and light towing rope. It has other applications where a high strength shock resistant rope is required. Nylon rope has a shiny white appearance and when new, an oily feel. Advantages/Characteristics High elasticity - stretches up to 46% before breaking. Medium abrasion and U.V resistance. (Slightly less resistance than polyester.) Excellent shock absorbtion. Sinks in water. Strongest of all conventional synthetic ropes. Uses Light and heavy tow ropes (possible because of excellent shock absorption). Anchor and mooring ropes (because of high elasticity) Sizes and Breaking Loads Nylon rope.

Polyester rope is generally considered to be the best all purpose rope as it has a high resistance to abrasion and at normal working loads very little stretch. When new it has a dull white colour and it is 1.38 times more dense than water and therefore sinks. Polyester is ideal for lifting gear and for all other ropes where minimum stretch and a good resistance to abrasion are required. Construction Manufactured with a 3 strand hawser laid construction. Advantages/Characteristics low stretch. High Strength, and high breakload. Very high U.V and abrasion resistance (superior to nylon) Resistant to most chemicals, both acidic and alkaline. Non-oating.

NB. Sizes indicated are an approximate guide only. Variation on the type of yacht (cruiser, cruiser racer, hightech racer) and factors such as displacement, righting moment, sail area and rig types will produce different load characteristics. As a general rule Challenge Braid and Super Braid can be the smaller of the diameters shown. Note: Ensure that the line is of sufcient diameter to avoid slippage on self tailing winches, cleats and jammers.
45
Knots
Know your ropes. Tips!! Synthetic ropes are much more slippery than their natural bre counterparts and knots can sometimes slip. Allow plenty ot extra tail in synthetic rope knots to compensate for this. Polypropylene is the bre that shows least slippage and polyethylene shows the most. One of the ropes worst enemies is direct sunlight. This can make outer bres brittle and cause serious damage in small sized ropes if left exposed for very long periods. This effect is most noticed in Polypropylene.
Blakes Hitch Prusik Loop Used to self belay when using the foot-lock it allows the climber to rest during the ascent.
Where a length of rope has a certain proportion of its length in frequent contact with a working surface such as a sheave, change the rope end-for end occassionally - or alter its length so that the wear is evenly distributed. In this way, as with swapping around the tyres in a car, you will get longer and more reliable service from your cordage.

The tightening torque shall be achieved on greased bearing surfaces of the nuts. With improperly tightened nuts, or with fewer grips than the number recommended, the end of the rope might draw through the grips even at light loading. The grips furtherest from the eye of the thimble should not be over tightened as that is the most vulnerable part of such an assembly. The tightening torque applied to the nuts should always comply with any recommendations provided by the manufacturer; however where recommendations are not provided by the manufaturer, the tightening torque applied to the nuts should comply with the table below.
Method of Application
The efciency of a wire rope termination made with wire rope grips depends on their number per connection, their correct placement on the ropes, and the care and skill in the tting and tightening of the grips. The number of wire rope grips per connection should not be less than the minimum specied in the table alongside. The grips in a connection should be spaced along the wire rope at a distance between adjacent clips of approximaetly six rope diameters, with the position of the clip nearest the end connection as shown. The sequence of tightening an assembly of wire rope grips on a wire rope connection after they have been correctly positioned is from the thimble outwards.

Wirelock
Wirelock is a unique socketing compound for use with wire ropes. It is quite simply the best socketing solution for safety, dependability and unparalleled fatigue performance. Wirelock started life in 1962 and has been in general use for more than 30 years. Wirelock is the original cold socketing compound and, therefore, eliminates the hazards of working with a molten metal, allowing socketing to be done on site in virtually all weather conditions. It is extremely difcult to produce a void free socket when using molten metal, but extremely easy to produce a void free socket using Wirelock. This ensures a quality socket everytime. Wirelock improves productivity by eliminating all these problems: No heat No acid No special skills No expensive equipment No special storage conditions No guessing of temperature No hazardous molten material No long cooling/curing process No loss of lubricant at socket neck General Engineering Uses are extremely varied and include crane ropes, boom pendants, winches, lifting straps and mast stays. Wirelock should always be used when socketing P.F.V ropes as the use of a molten metal will melt and vapourise the polymer in the valleys of the rope. Structures These are generally long term applications such as suspended roofs for stadia, aircraft hangers and other diverse structures. Bridges Wirelock is now widely used on prestigious new build projects such as the Bosphorous II in Turkey and the Storebaelt in Denmark. Its use in the refurbishment of existing bridges includes those at Albegna in Italy, Elke in Spain, the Forth Road bridge in Scotland and the Point dAquitaine in France. Some of the bridges use polymer sheathed ropes for maximum corrosion resistance. Wirelock, being a cold process, does not damage the sheathing material and is, therefore, ideal for these applications. Mining Wirelock is the only socketing medium that is currently approved in the UK for both man and materials winding. It is extensively used for the same purposes in the gold mines of South Africa and mines in Australia and Canada. Offshore Wirelock is the preferred socketing medium for offshore mooring system worldwide. Moreover, it is the only socketing system that meets the requirements of D.N.Vs Certication Notes No. 2.5 Certication of Mooring Steel Wire Ropes May 1995. It has both Lloyds approval and ABS type approval. Wirelock is manufactured under very strict quality controlLloyds Register Q.A ISO 9002. 64

Adjuster Gripple
The Fast and Flexible Approach to Terminating Wire Rope One Gripple replaces a Turnbuckle and Grips Gripples can be used wherever you use a wire rope in static bracing and suspended load applications. ( it is not designed to lift or suspend persons). The Gripple allows you to push a wire or rope through in one direction, but not in the other. As each Gripple has two channels which work in opposite directions, a termination can be made by simply forming a loop. Because its action is automatic, each Gripple provides the same consistent quality of termination regardless of site conditions and skill of the operator.
