Munezo has lived modestly with his mother and sister Shino after his father was forced into suicide after the failure of a bridge pro ject. Kie, a farm girl serves them as a maid in their house. As time passes, Mun ezo's sister marries Samon, his mother dies, Kie is married into a merchant fami ly, and he is required to learn western methods of warfare such as the use of ar tillery and firearms from an official sent from Edo. Learning that Kie is ill du e to abuse, he rescues her from her husband's family. Although sharing mutual af fection and respect, a marriage between Munezo and Kie is still impossible due t o different castes, and when he, now a bachelor, is criticized for her serving i n his house, Munezo sends her back to her father's farm. After being caught in a failed political intrigue, Yaichiro is sent home in disgrace and imprisoned in solitary confinement. After Yaichiro escapes, Munezo is ordered to prove his inn ocence from complicity by killing his old friend, and he seeks the help of his o ld teacher, the sword master Kansai Toda. Although Yaichiro had been the better swordsman when they studied together, Toda entrusted the secret of the "Hidden B lade" only to Munezo. Toda now teaches him a new technique to use as he prepares to face Yaichiro, who has taken hostages in a farm house. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Individuals vs. Society Beautifully Portrayed in the Closing Age of Samurai, 12 July 2006 "The Hidden Blade (Kakushi-ken: oni no tsume)" is filmed in a deceptively old-fa shioned and leisurely style to make pointed observations of Japanese society, mu ch as "Far From Heaven" did for the U.S. Director/co-writer Yji Yamada again adapts Shuuhei Fujisawa stories as he did so beautifully in "Twilight Samurai (Tasogare Seibei)". Taking place just a few yea rs before Hollywood's "The Last Samurai", this feels like a rebuke and response to that very Westernized interpretation of some of the same issues of how change s in military technology impacted feudalism and imperialism, as well as visually referencing many classic Japanese samurai films, but from a more individualized point of view then Kurosawa, Kobayashi or Inagaki The first half of the film establishes the complicated domestic life and frustra ting work of the struggling samurai (a solid and sympathetic Masatoshi Nagase, c

hanneling Toshir EMifune). The broadly comic scenes of fumbled rifles and cannon t raining recall similarities with the "Sharpe" TV series of the just a bit earlie r Napoleonic wars. Particularly lovely are household hearth scenes of warmth bet ween generations and between master and servants.
