Dear Nadia, I received your letter this morning and I was shocked to hear that your brother has run away from home. As you requested, Ive tried but Im sorry I dont have any news here regarding him. I have asked the whole neighbourhood, everyone that you knew when you were living here, but nobody has seen him nor heard from him. I promise that I will continue to keep a look out wherever I go. In fact, I cycled around the village the whole afternoon looking for him. I have even checked with his old classmates and friends but they told me he has not kept in touch with them since your family moved to Petaling Jaya. Kadir has always been very obedient. It is hard to believe that he would do something like this. It is strange that he just went off when there are no problems at home. You may be right that his new friends have something to do with it. I know it is useless to tell you not to worry. Please call me as soon as Kadir is home. Do take care of yourself and let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

When I was a child, mum would read to me every night. After a bedtime prayer, I would be tucked up in bed while mum sat on the edge of the bed. She would open a book, draw her breath and begin to read. I never had any idea whom I'd meet on those magical nights. There was Alice going through the looking glass; Robinson Crusoe on his island; Oliver Twist starving in the workhouse or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in

the lab. As the years passed, I grew up, went to university, and found work as a newspaper reporter. Mum grew old and frail. Now she is an invalid, confined to bed. Her body may be weak but her mind is as bright as ever. I read to her now, from some of the well-worn and dog eared books she read to me so long ago. Sometimes I think back to my childhood nights when mum would be weary after a long day's work but was never too tired to open a book and read to me. I thank God for the most precious gift I have ever received - the gift of words and books. 5. Whom did the writer meet on those childhood nights? A. Neighbours B. Friends C. Relatives D.
