Exploration of the need and evaluation

I am making this item of jewellery that are between the ages of twenty to thirty. This item of jewellery is designed for the women who work and live in the city though have a strong love for the beach and all the beachs features. I have sent around a survey consisting of different sorts of questions that have helped me to determine my decisions on how I will design and construct my piece of jewellery. Below I have screen shot the questions I asked in my survey and the answers. These answers have helped me to determine what sort of style of jewellery I am making.

I have decided to make a delicate, everyday bracelet that everyone can wear with anything. This silver bracelet consists of pearls and features a starfish charm. This bracelet will have both simple and complicated techniques shown throughout the design.

I had an idea to create both a bracelet and a necklace. I decided to ask people which jewellery piece they would rather. Most people chose a bracelet. I have decided to create a bracelet.

I gave people three options on the different types of bracelets. Most people chose the delicate bracelet category. I have decided to make a delicate bracelet.

I asked this question to see if what type of jewellery people would rather, either gold of silver.

I asked this question to see if what type of jewellery people would rather, either gold of silver. Most people chose silver jewellery, therefore I have chosen to make a delicate silver bracelet.

I asked this question to see if people were fond of pearl jewellery because I had an idea of including pearls to my jewellery design. Most people are fond of pearls so I have decided to include pearls. My jewellery design is now consisting of a silver delicate bracelet with pearls.

I asked this question because it determines if my jewellery design is going to be worn on special occasions or every day. Most people chose to wear their jewellery every day. Therefore I am creating this piece of jewellery for people who can wear it every day and so it matches multiple amounts of clothing. The silver chain which I am going to use will also help to make this item of jewellery match different clothing items as an everyday accessory.

I decided to make my jewellery design unique. I am still going with the theme of a beach/city jewellery design look so my jewellery design will already have that unique look to it. Unique jewellery is liked a lot which is good because a lot of people will like this design.

I have decided to also add a charm to my bracelet. My idea was to have a silver starfish charm. Starfish reminds people of the beach though when put with silver chain and pearls it is easily transformed into a city styled design. This idea would be great for the people who love the beach and the city and want to be in both places at the same time.

Who is it for? Age- this item of jewellery is for women between the ages of twenty to thirty. Personality- The personality of the people purchasing this item of jewellery would be women between the ages of twenty to thirty who live and work in the city. These women however love the beach and cant get enough of it, though their everyday life style interferes with this love for the beach and they have to work in the city instead. These women do not particularly wear a lot of jewellery; one delicate item of jewellery is enough. Style- The style of these people is very modern and high class, though part of them has a love for the beach. Interests- The interests in the type of people purchasing this item of jewellery are working and living in the city. They love going to the beach in their spare time. Colour- The colour in this item of jewellery will manly feature cream and silver. This shows the delicacy of the item of jewellery and will match many items of clothing. Symbol- There will be a starfish shown on this item of jewellery. This is to show that although these people live in the city and dress very classy, they still have a love for the beach and all the marvellous features at the beach. Size/strength/material etc.- The size of this jewellery will be quite small and delicate though it will have stand out because of its uniqueness. The materials throughout this item of jewellery will consist of silver chain, pearls and silver charms. I will make these charms using polymer clay, google sketch up & 3D printer (to make moulds), resin, paint and gloss.

Research and evaluation of existing designs

I have researched many photos of both city and beach features. I have attached a video below of my research of existing designs: http://animoto.com/play/0CRQKpQr2iLYjIJy9fbY0A I have created collages of different characteristics of my design and have elaborated on what part of each collage I will include in my jewellery design. Collage 1: Beach Inspiration This collage consists of various pictures influencing the beach. For part of my design I have decided to incorporate beach type items for example pearls and starfish.

Collage 2: City Inspiration This collage consists of various pictures demonstrating the characteristics of the city life. There is a person walking with very modern day clothes and high class accessories. I have decided to incorporate city designs into my piece of jewellery by making the style of jewellery quite modern and high delicate. This jewellery is going to be an item of jewellery that suits the cities atmosphere.

Collage 3: Beach Jewellery Inspiration

This collage gets into more detail about the style of jewellery I am looking for. The bracelet featured on the top left is covered in pearls; part of my design was going to be based on pearls. The picture on the bottom left features a silver starfish charm and a cream pearl beside it. These of the sorts of features I am looking for. The final item of jewellery shown in this collage is the bracelet on the top right. It features both gold and silver designs (which shows elegance) but at the same time incorporates a starfish charm and a shell charm. All these existing jewellery have been very inspirational and has helped me to move closer to my design idea.

Collage 4: City Jewellery Inspiration

This collage demonstrates the closer concepts of city jewellery. The silver bracelet featured on the bottom left is a delicate, modern day bracelet that any woman would wear in the city to match anything. The bracelet featured on the top right is a cream pearl fine, elegant bracelet including one bead which is covered in sparkling silver stones. This bracelet really captures the city feel. These existing jewellery designs have helped me to find out what I am designing and how I will incorporate them into my own jewellery design.

I have chosen the following Jewellery designs to label in detail. These Jewellery designs appeal to me because they are the type of designs I am looking for in my jewellery idea. These are the jewellery items that I will try to base my design on. Jewellery Idea 1: This design appeals to me because it is a modern day look that can be easily made by just a few simple jewellery making techniques. This jewellery design can be worn with just about anything. The pearl like shape can be made by moulding little circular balls with polymer clay and coating them after putting them in the oven with cream paint and gloss.

I can attach the entire pearl like balls with white string in order to make a bracelet. The white string will combine with the cream like pearls instead of stand out, making the pearls the main feature.

The feature pearl can be made out of polymer clay and rolled into little circular balls, though instead of putting them straight in the oven, I can coat the pearl in little jewels. I will than take it out and gloss it so it is glossy and the Jewells dont come off.

Plus
This bracelet is a great example of a simple, everyday bracelet that would match just about anything.

Minus
This bracelet has no starfish charm; instead it just has a pearl covered in jewels.

Improvement
I could improve this pearl covered in jewel charm by making a silver starfish charm and cover it in jewels instead.

Jewellery Idea 2: This idea appeals to me because it incorporates the modern day look as well as the beach look. You would not however wear this piece of jewellery to the beach because it is more of a delicate piece of jewellery, though this piece of jewellery is perfect for a day out at the city. The shell charm can easily be recreated by using polymer clay, paint and gloss.

The gold chain can easily be added to the bracelet as a modern day look. This starfish is a very delicate charm that can either be made out of polymer clay or out of resin by creating a starfish mould on google sketch up with the 3D printer. I would than add jewels to make the charm look more appealing and to stand out. You can do this by applying them before they are put into the oven when using polymer clay, so that they are stuck when they are set.

The white rope can be recreated with tying two pieces of thick string together. This look incorporates the beach type look though is able to be worn in the city.

Charms can be attached by simple chain. We are supplied with readymade chain. The shell gold feature shell charm can also be easily recreated by using polymer clay, gold pant and gloss.

Plus
This bracelet really expresses the beach look as well as expresses the city look. The silver jewel covered starfish is very delightful as the jewels make the starfish charm stand out.

Minus
This bracelet is a little to beach like; as it has too many beach charms. The bracelet has gold chain instead of silver chain.

Improvement
I could add fewer beach like charms to this bracelet to make it more of a city bracelet. Instead of adding all the charms, I could add some pearls instead to make the bracelet look more delicate. I could change the gold chain to silver chain so it can match more items of clothing.

Jewellery Idea 3: This item of jewellery really interoperates the feeling of both the city and the beach. This piece of jewellery is great for the city as it is filled with delicate little silver charms. These delicate little charms are the objects in this piece of jewellery that characterise the beach. The colour blue symbolises the feeling of the beach through water and the sea horse symbolises the beach through marine life. This piece of jewellery is a great piece of jewellery as it features both city life and beach life in the one bracelet.
The sea horse charm indicates the beach feel as it is a marine animal. This charm can be created by making a mould on google sketch up and printing it out on the 3D printer. You can then use resin to fill in the mould.

Many charms are held by a ring type piece of metal, connecting the charm to the bracelet. We are supplied with these sorts of connectors and it would be a great way to add charms to a bracelet.

The blue coloured charms add a great beach feel to this modern day bracelet. The blue coloured charm can easily be created by sculpting a charm out of polymer clay and finish it off with blue paint and gloss once it is out of the oven. This bracelet is held by a very thick silver chain, this silver chain is very convenient in order to hold all these delicate charms.

Plus
This bracelet really expresses the city look as well as the beach look through the coloured and different shaped charms. This bracelet is a great bracelet to be worn in the city.

Minus
There are a bit too many charms featured on this bracelet and it is a bit over whelming. The blue coloured charms will not be helpful as an everyday bracelet because it wouldnt match all items of clothing.

Improvement
I could add fewer charms and add more plain chain or even some pearls. I could change the blue coloured charms to silver coloured charms so that they can match all items of clothing.

Overall These existing designs have been an inspiration and helped me to figure out what I will be designing. I have decided to go with the beach/city theme and create this item of jewellery for the women who live and work in the city though find it hard because they love the feeling of being present with the beach. I have decided to make my bracelet out of sterling silver chain and charms either out of polymer clay or resin. My designs will include characteristics of both beach features and city features and will demonstrate an item of uniqueness. The images in which I have gone into more detail are examples of both City and Beach types of jewellery. I have labelled both of them and elaborated on how I could make these designs myself using my own jewellery making techniques.

Generation and evaluation of 2 ideas with annotations (image- high light specific points)

Design 1:

Plus
The design combines both the city feel with the pearls and jewels, as well as the beach feel with the starfish. This design also expresses the simple look that you could wear every day. This design consists of the colours cream and silver, making it an item of jewellery that can be worn with anything.

Minus
The bracelet seems a little too plain as most of the bracelet just includes plain pearls.

Improvement
I could improve on this design by adding more details to the bracelet. I could add more statement charms instead of just three.

11

Design 2:

Plus
This item of jewellery really expresses the city and beach theme. The city theme is expressed through the pearls with Jewells and the beach theme is expressed with the pearls with textured detailing. This design also includes the colours silver and cream, making it an item of jewellery that can be worn with anything.

Minus
There is a bit too much happening in this design. The starfish is supposed to be the feature charm that stands out. Even though it is the only one with no pattern or texture to it, it doesnt stand out as the feature charm.

Improvement
I could improve on this design by adding less detail to the pearls and more details to the starfish in order for it to stand out.

12

Final design with dimensions and materials

My final design is a delicate, everyday bracelet that consists of the beach/city look. This bracelet has a starfish covered in silver jewels to stand out and distinguish that it is the feature charm. The cream pearls to the left of the starfish, have textured detail created by a tooth pick. This creates the effect of the soft waves flowing in and out onto the sand. The cream pearls to the right of the starfish are just plain pearls. I have designed this design to have two different types of pearls to add variety and make it more unique. These pearls and feature charm are all held together by clear elastic, this is also so the bracelet can stretch making it handy and convenient for anyone to wear. In conclusion this bracelet is quite small, though it has a big personality. The main material featured in my jewellery design is polymer clay. The other materials featured in my design are: Plastic elastic- to attach beads to bracelet. Silver jewels- to apply to starfish for it to stand out as the feature charm. Cream paint- To make the pearls look more realistic. Silver chain- To attach the starfish charm to the bracelet Tooth pick- To create the textured look into the pearls on the left side of the bracelet.

3. Develop a flow chart of a design process undertaken by the team at Dinosaur Designs.

4. Dinosaur Designs uses specialist designers for some aspects of their work, for example, architects and graphic designers. Compare the design process used to design Dinosaur Designs' jewellery and that used by the product designer Angelo Kotsis. What are the similarities and differences between the two processes? The two designing processes were used to make this product by Angelo Kotsis and the designers. The architect aspects were the research and get influenced from other torches and sketches of how the torches could look. The Graphic designers aspects included using 3D modelling to communicate their ideas and making models made of wood or foam to the exact sizing. The similarities in which the two processes had in common were that they both research and discussed many ideas and issues, whether it was through 3D images to sketches. 5. The Dinosaur Designs team are passionate about their work. They use a particular language to communicate their process of design, for example, hand-felt and finessing. Select these words and in the context of the passage, discuss what the designer means by them.

16

Dinosaur Designers are very passionate about their work and love developing ideas through different Medias (wax, plasticine). The word hand-felt is expressing resin as a relatively modern material. People image plastic as a hard material, though they wanted it to be relative to how something feels in the hand. The word finessing means to make something better. A lot of the workers love finessing products to improve them and make them more modern. They especially like making jewellery more fashionable and trendy. Some other words used throughout the Dinosaur Designs environment include: Modelling- A development of prototypes, scale models, computer models before construction to test a possible design solution. Graphic Designer- Designers who use graphic elements and text to communicate an idea or concept. 3D- Three- dimensional. Having, or appearing to have length, width and depth.

2. Jewellery design is a design specialisation of the area of study: Products. What other design specialisations does Dinosaur Designs work in? Dinosaur Designs not only design jewellery but they also specialise in a line of home wares.

3. List some of the reasons people wear jewellery. Describe your favourite piece of jewellery and the reasons it is important to you. There are many reasons why people wear jewellery. People wear jewellery to express an opinion, to spice up an outfit, people even wear jewellery as a meaning of something, for example a wedding ring symbolises marriage. One of my favourite pieces of jewellery would be a collar bone necklace than has various jewels all around it. It is plain silver with white jewels. I like this piece of jewellery because it is delicate, though at the same time it is extremely pretty. This piece of jewellery is important to me because it was given to me from my parents on the day of my First Communion. This piece of jewellery symbolises love from my parents and also faith because I wore it to a sacrament.

Section 4: Generating Ideas

1. Identify some of the methods used by Dinosaur Designs to generate creative ideas. Ideas pop up all the time. They can be as simple as starring at a bus ticket and coming up with an idea. Some of the methods used by Dinosaur Designs include: Always having sketch book with them- this is so if they think of any creative ideas, and they can sketch it down wherever they are and expand on the idea from that. Create designs out of nothing- one of the hardest things to do is when you are creating things out of whats lying around. This creation may not be the end result of your product but it will help you to come up with a unique creative idea. Inspiration from art- A lot of ideas and designs can even come from looking at art history, paintings, sculptures and even the natural world.

Section 5: Selects, Analyses, presents and applies research

1. Experimenting and testing of design ideas was important for the development of Dinosaur Designs' first innovative products for Paddington markets. Describe the experimentation and testing that was carried out. The development of Dinosaur Designs which was hand-painted clothes and Fimo jewellery designs was a great success for the Paddington markets. After this, all three of the designers received degrees in Professional Arts Study. They then started to experiment with hand-painted resin for jewellery production. After this their career of Dinosaur Designs took off. 2. Dinosaur Designs are influenced to a certain extent by current trends. What sources of information would be particularly useful for jewellery designers? The Dinosaur Design workers constantly are influenced by current trends. They will have a sketchbook out and develop drawings and ideas. They will then use wood, plasticine or wax to create models of their designs. Sources of information that would be particularly useful for jewellery designers would be art galleries, art history, paintings, sculptures and the natural world. Also if jewellery designers wanted to design modern/current trends, sources of information could be fashion shows and magazines.

Section 6: Mixed Material Technologies

1. If you were to design a small pendant how could it be mass produced? Research the different ways in which you could produce multiple copies of this object. If I were to design a small pendant that could be mass produced, I could design it on the google sketch up and print multiple copies on the 3D printer. 2. For the small pendant research how it can be finished. How does it affect the visual appeal of the object? By mass producing the same pendant through a 3D printer, the visual appeal may affect the object because it could be slightly off track to what it actually looks like. The pendant could turn out lop sided if not created properly on google sketch up. 3. Research other products made from polyester resin, e.g. bathroom vanities, bathtubs, canoes, surfboards. Compare the characteristics of these products with the characteristics of Dinosaur Designs' products. Polyester resin is a synthetic resin that is insoluble. Polyester Resin has good adhesive properties, good chemical resistance and outstanding strength. A product made of polyester resin is a surfboard. An object like a surfboard is very different to an object made from Dinosaur Designs. Surf boards are made from polyester resin and fibre glass, whereas Dinosaur Designs have made their very own polyester resin that they have developed themselves. This polyester resin has been approved by experts such as chemists. The characteristics to create a surfboard consist of the components of a surfboard, the types of surfboards and the materials used in surfboards. The compounds of the surfboard include: Length Width Nose Tail Rails Fin Foil Deck The types of surfboards include: Shortboards Longboards Funboards Fish Gun Hybrid Other The materials of a surfboard include: Foam blank Fiberglass cloth
23

Resin Stinger The Characteristics of Dinosaur Designs process includes Polyester resin, Intellectual property and Constrains. The Polyester process resin includes: Resin that has such ability that it can deal with a lot of impact. Researching materials using a variety of sources. Using the internet to find out about tools and techniques that can be used in the manufacturing process. The Intellectual property process includes: Many techniques and materials have been developed over time and kept secret by the company. The Constraints process includes: Training in visual arts so it is easy to design and make objects. Developing business management skills by building slowly and making sure than any mistakes remained small.
