The Struggle for Aboriginal Rights in Australia Thesis


The Australian government has denied rights to the aboriginal peoples of Australia by the policy of assimilation, the abuse of land rights, and the Northern Territory Intervention while ignoring its responsibility to acknowledge the first people of Australia as part of society.

This picture shows aboriginal Australians at the tent embassy rallying for their rights. This picture is significant since it shows how aboriginals oppose the white settlers. She described her life growing up, and the confusion and fear she feels when she is loaded on a ship with her sister and other girls and taken away by nuns. This source was very useful since it showed the toll the Stolen Generations took on families. This source supports my thesis by providing a strong support for the discrimination against aboriginals.

She described how she was forbidden to speak her native tongue, and she could only speak English. She also described how she and the other children were forced to sleep outside with only a blanket on the ground. This source was very useful since it described the horrible circumstances Jane had to live in. This source supports my thesis by showing how terrible the government treated the aboriginal peoples. In the speech, Tom describes the current state of human rights in Australia. He also describes how these rights sometimes do and dont apply to the aboriginal peoples in Australia. This source was very useful since it drew an overall image of the way the government is handling the aboriginals and it also provided an outside view of these issues. It is used to show how the Australian government discriminated the aborigines since the Constitution was made; certain pages of this document will be used in my page "Background" on my website. This document describes how assimilation of aboriginal children into white families will make a better quality of life for indigenous peoples. I will use this document for background information and in my webpage "The Stolen Generations" to show the government's reasoning for the assimilation.

He described how he was locked up in the dormitories with the other children for endless nights, where they could not escape.

And he was asked what religion he was, and if the children didnt reply Christianity, they were taken to another place and had limited education based on Christianity. This source was useful since it shows the importance of religion and how it was imposed on the aboriginals back then. This source supports my thesis by showing how the government unfairly treated the aboriginal children. Dodson, Michael. Social Justice for Indigenous Peoples. Third David Unaipon Lecture. October 1993. Speech. https://www.humanrights.gov.au/news/speeches/site-navigation-57 This source is a speech by Michael Dodson, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner. In the speech, he talks about the unfair treatment of aboriginal peoples. He describes indigenous people being murdered for the governments benefit and how social justice will never be achieved as long as indigenous people are abused. This source was very useful since it shows how bad aboriginal peoples are being treated. This source supports my thesis since it is requesting for social justice to be served and for aboriginal peoples to have more rights.

It depicts aborigines drinking while in the background white settlers maintain their hotel and watch on with calm demeanor. I used it to show how the aboriginals, from the arrival of the Europeans, were shown as uncivilized; this I used in the "Overview" webpage.

He describes the poor characteristics of where he was taken to, and how he lost the personal love with his mother and siblings, and instead had his inmates as his family. This source was moderately useful since it described the terrible conditions of his stay as well as the loss of his family. This source supports my thesis by giving an emotional and personal experience on losing his family. This source was useful since it shows the nature of the aboriginal peoples in Australia. This source shows the unstable conditions of aboriginal peoples during that time, and the toll on the aboriginal community, supporting my thesis. Kitchener, Keith. This source is an interview with Keith Kitchener, one of the Australian aboriginal children taken away from their families (Stolen Generations). He described how he was sick as a child and every year he was in a hospital; he also described how he was forced to work with other kids and he had to go to school every day, or he would be caned. This source was useful since it described the importance of schooling from the governments point of view so that the aboriginals could convert to Christianity. This source supports my thesis by showing how aboriginal children needed more rights.

He describes the horrors of being treated as an aboriginal, with frequent beatings and working every day for no money, forced to build a railway. This source was very useful since it shows the terrible treatment of the aboriginal children. This source supports my thesis by showing the unfair treatment of the aboriginals. Linnow, Valerie. She described the harsh treatment she received by the nuns that took her. She was beaten if she mentioned her mother or father, and she suffered depression throughout her life, looking for her family. This source was very useful since it describes the emotional toll the children received from the separation of families. This source supports my thesis by showing how the government split aboriginal peoples apart and crushed their hopes. Mackenzie, Ruth. Interview by Stolen Generations Testimonies. She described how she could only speak English around adults and how the children were beaten if they did not

follow rules. Aboriginal girls were offered several older white husbands, and Ruth resisted and eventually married an aboriginal husband. This source was useful since it showed the terrible conditions the aboriginal peoples were taken under. This source supports my thesis by showing how aboriginal children and their families should have had more rights. Marshall, Nita. Interview by Stolen Generations Testimonies. She described how she tried to run away when the police arrived to take her from her family, as well as the grueling work she was subjected to each day, starting at 6:00 in the morning to clean and cook. This source was very useful since it describes how the children were used and treated. This source supports my thesis in showing the unfair treatments of the young aboriginal children. He describes how he was only known as one number, 28, and did not know his real name until later when he married; he was mistreated by the priests that watched over him and the other boys. This source was very useful since it showed repetitive violations of human rights. This source supports my thesis by giving a first-hand experience on how it felt to be disowned by others because of aboriginal heritage. Morrison, Buddy. Interview by Stolen Generations Testimonies. He described what harsh labor he had to go through when he was taken. The welfare did not provide boots in the winter, and the children would get caned if they didnt follow the rules. This source was very useful since it described the terrible conditions the children had to live in as well as

She describes how she was raised in a hunting community, and used to go hunting with her father; as well as how scared she was when she was taken from her parents around the age of 7, and how her white biological father could only see her few times a month since if they caught him he would be arrested. This source was very useful since it showed the strict laws against aboriginal peoples made by the government. This source supports my thesis by describing the unfair laws back then. It is an excellent source because it describes the terrible conditions of living that the Australian aborigines are in and how aboriginal children are being abused constantly in these communities. I will use this document in my webpage "The Northern Territory Intervention" to emphasize the government's ignorance of the recommendations made by this report to communicate with the aboriginal leaders. He described how he was taken from his parents and how he formed bonds with the other boys that were there. He did work and went to school but was not beaten since he followed all of the rules. This source was useful since it described the more positive sides of being taken, although it still showed the loss of love from his family. This source supports my thesis by showing that if aboriginal peoples had more rights, everyone could live in harmony.

This source was useful since it showed how bad the aboriginal children were treated, even in a religious atmosphere. This source is an interview with Rita Wright, one of the Australian aboriginal children taken away from their families (Stolen Generations). She described how she was taken to a Christian place where she had to call the couple that owned the place mother and father. She was taken from her real parents and her parents believed that she and her siblings had been all killed. This source was useful since it showed how the government split aboriginal families apart. This source supports my thesis by showing how the government abused its power over the aboriginal people in Australia.

This source was useful since it described the unfairness against aboriginal peoples in Australia. This source shows the unfairness of aboriginal rights in Australia, and also views the aboriginal peoples as not having enough rights, which helps my argument in the project.
