en science and religion collide with each other throughout the story. One of the many turning points in regards to such an argument would be the revelation of how the pope fathered his child. When discovering how such an influential and holy relic like the pope produced a child through insemination, the plot begs to offer the suggestionastowhetherreligionandsciencecancongregatetogetherinacivilunion. The popes startling secret is revealed during a heated confrontation between the Camerlengo and Mortati. According to Mortati, although the pope had a son, the art of science enabled him such a gift of fatherhood without breaking his vow of celibacy.1 This quote aloneshowshowtheadvancementof science has allowed a person assanctifiedas the pope goaround religiousruleswithout committinga sin. Although both science and religion stand for practical and spiritual beliefs of the universe, both sides can have momentsofcoexistenceininstancessuchasinsemination. The advancement of modern day science saves lives and has provided opportunities to people like the pope. Others believe that although science provides physical evidence, it neglects to acknowledge the man that bestowed such abundant resources to this growingworld.According to the Camerlengo,that man isGod. In Camerlengos captivating speech on the effects of science and religion, he declares nationally that, science, yousay,willsave us.Science, I say,hasdestroyed us.2 This quoteis both rightand wrong. True, science has brought forth nuclear and destructive weapons and harmful chemicals that we use in battle against each other. However, science has given us medicinal care and physical statistics as to how the worldhasevolvedsincethebeginningoftime. This novel compels the reader continuously with the lingering question of whether science and religion will everfindaharmonizederatogether.
