All of these resources can in some way help students for their future by finding and relating to jobs in the field of Kinesiology.

Who the Guide is for


The guide is intended for the use of Pennsylvania State University undergraduate students majoring in Kinesiology; it can be used as a study aid or for further exploration of information, or career opportunities. The guide is useful for all kinesiology students no matter their status, since it ranges from basic information to specific and complex ideas. Many of the sources are beneficial for students thinking about a career in kinesiology. The guide would be well suited for students looking for internship and job opportunities. Furthermore, students writing a thesis paper or doing extensive research will benefit greatly from this guide, because it is comprised of many sites with data and references.

What the Guide Assumes


On its own, the guide wont help anyone get what they need. Instead the guide will aid in finding credible resources. The guide is meant for someone who is motivated to learn new information and who has an interest in Kinesiology itself. The guides focus is for undergraduate Kinesiology students and their level of knowledge. Although, some resources are by Kinesiology professionals in their careers; many of these included have the assumption that the user is enrolled at Penn State currently. Finally, the guide assumes that the user has some knowledge with computers and using the Internet.

Organization of the Guide


The guides organization allows for quick and easy navigation. The Table of Contents assists in the navigation of the guide, and directing to interested information. The Preface section contains information about the guide. The General Information section has basic sources that can be used by anyone interested in Kinesiology. The Kinesiology Publications section holds sources that are specific towards people that are interested in Kinesiology.

Tips for Using the Guide


The best way to use the guide most effectively and efficiently is to know precisely what you are looking for. By knowing what you want, you will be able to focus on getting the information that best suits your interest. If you know what you want out of the guide, you can use the Table of Contents to find the resource that is specific to your need. Though, if you are unsure the exact information you are looking for, you can read through this entire document and find what interests you.

General Information
This section contains basic references that can be used to help find research within the Kinesiology field.

PubMed
Electronic Database Location http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed Abstract PubMed is a government created database, which contains online journals regarding the US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. The database includes research articles and review papers from many medical and health journals. The journals provided give an abstract of the full article, and some articles have full access for the user. To view entire publications, the user needs to have a membership with the site. Penn State students will have access to view a greater amount of material on the database. The database is divided into many different subsections that the site differentiates the journals into; this creates simpler navigation to retrieve information of interest. The division of subsections allows for specific searches for the user. The search engine style used is a great tool for kinesiology students by allowing for further research into topics of interest. Overall, PubMed is a great resource for projects and papers for kinesiology courses and future careers. Tips There is a search bar at the top of every page. The browser allows the user to sort the list of journals by discipline. The browser allows for an advanced search, and has a link to a YouTube tutorial for instructions. The left side of a Search Results page allows for filtering to specify the search. The right side of a search consists of results by year, related searches, titles with your search terms, and free full-text articles in PubMed Central.

Catalog of U.S. Government Publications


Government Database Location http://catalog.gpo.gov/F?RN=58610744 Abstract The Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP) is a search tool for publications from: legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the government. The CGP contains records of historical and current publications and the links to them. The CGP contains over 500,000 records from 1976 and includes documents from the 1800s. The CGP website gives the user access to the online versions of publications, locates records at nearby Federal depositories, and conducts both general and advanced searches. Users can search the subject, title, keyword, or authorizing agency to find certain documents. Users can further search resources by year, format, or language of document. Kinesiology students can find information on research or to stay current on federal programs concerning the field when using the CGP. Tips Make use of the advanced search option to find specific publications, such as keywords/phrases, year/s, format, language, catalogs, etc. There are Search hints located on the bottom of the advanced search page, this is to assist in the making the best searches for the user. A Help tab on the top of the page can assist in the finding of other catalogs to search, and cross-catalog searching, etc.

Statistical Abstract of the U.S.


Government Database Location http://statab.conquestsystems.com/sa/?id=061d2037-15db-450b-b37d-59c83d0ab23f# Abstract The Statistical Abstract of the U.S. holds information on: households, businesses, geography, world news, and special topics. The information includes things such as facts for students and teachers like college admissions information, etc. The data stays current by updating constantly. Users can either use the search engine at the top of the page, or use the Table of Contents; this links to different sections that the database holds information. The user is able to narrow their search to the 2014 edition alone, allowing for a more specific search. For example, clicking on section three will lead to Health and Nutrition. Then, the user can click on National Health Expenditures which will show the increasing spending on different health services. The Statistical Abstract includes many different areas that can be seen for more information on heath care. Tips For general searches there is the Table of Contents" on the left side of the homepage. There is a search engine on the top left portion of the page that allows for specific searches. There is a guide page that gives background information on the Statistical Abstract of the U.S., and a guide in using the site most efficiently. Refine searches by using the left side of page using filters for search.

Google Scholar
Database Location http://scholar.google.com Abstract Google Scholar is a research database, which contains scholarly articles in any field the user is interested in. The database includes research articles and review papers from all journals. The articles provided give access to full articles, and some articles have full access for the user. To view entire publications, the user needs to have a membership with the site. Which, being a Penn State student, you will have the access to view a larger amount of material on this database. It ensures that you will find actual scholarly articles in your search instead of opinions by random people. This is a useful tool for kinesiology students, it allows for research into topics of interest. Also, this is a great resource for projects and papers for kinesiology courses. Tips There is a search bar at the top of every page. The browser allows the user to sort the list of journals by discipline. The browser allows an advances search. The left side of a search allows for filtering of a search, allowing for a more specific search. Putting search in quotations will allow a search of the phrase.

Journal of Applied Physiology


Professional Association Location http://jap.physiology.org Abstract The Journal of Applied Physiology is a source of information in the form of research. The journal holds research studies that are relating to the physiology and its relation to the human body. The American Physiology Society has reviewed all studies published within the journal. The site contains a search bar to allow the user to create specific searches. The site allows for the viewing of different articles, which gives the user a choice to see the abstract or the full text. Penn State students are permitted to access the full site for no charge. Access to the full site includes current issues of the journal, or old material dating back to 1948; this can be very useful for kinesiology students because it allows for research and further exploration on information regarding human physiology. The user can stay up to date with new discoveries, technologies, and theories in the field. Tips Search bar on right side of page with advanced search option, allows for searches of specific years, volumes, authors, etc. Select articles to allow user to view multiple articles on the same page for easier comparisons. Click on Current Issue tab on top of page for a list of the latest articles that have been reviewed.

National Strength and Conditioning Association

The NSCA website holds information from articles that their journal publishes, and contains different education options. The NSCA has a certification for people that have the hope to train or work with other people with exercise endeavors. Also, the NSCA has a job listing portion of the website; this allows for companies to post job opportunities to their webpage, allowing for a broader search for applicants. Jobs listed can vary greatly, from professors to spinal cord rehab specialists. The user is able to select types of jobs and locations. By selecting a certain job posting, it will bring you to the job post where more information relating to the position is shown. The job information may include: requirements, salaries, job descriptions, etc. The site can help Kinesiology students with accessing a greater database to find internships and career opportunities. Allowing students to build experience and build up their resume. Tips Search bar in center of page. There is a save job listings to allow user to view them at a later time. American College of Sports Medicine


Fitness Resource Location http://www.acsm.org Abstract The ACSM is an organization, which holds resources, job opportunities, and certifications. They have over 45,000 members and certified professionals from 90 different countries. The research and collaboration aids in the progress of science practice, education and policy. The ACSM allow for memberships, which have an initial and maintenance fee, this gives full access to the website and all articles and resources provided by the site. And, by being a Penn State student you will be given a discount in the membership cost. Member of the ACSM organization receive invitations to seminars and are given access to articles, and continuing education opportunities. Members also receive discounts on certification costs, and are able to receive awards and grants provided by the ACSM. These can be student scholarships and grants to recognition of outstanding achievements. This can be a great resource for kinesiology students, allowing them to keep educated all the new comings in their field of interest. The journal holds research studies that are relating to the biomechanics and its relation to the human body. Journal of Biomechanics publishes reports of original and substantial findings. The journal accepts original articles, surveys and perspective articles, book reviews and letters to the Editor. The site contains a search bar to allow the user to create specific searches. The site allows for the viewing of different articles, which gives the user a choice to see the abstract or the full text. Penn State students are permitted to access the full site for no charge.
