Snack Menu/Activity Carpentry with Graham Crackers and Peanut Butter Food/Materials Needed Graham Crackers Peanut Butter Plastic Butter Knife Napkins Paper Plates Directions Prep Explain to the kids that they are about to experience the life of a carpenter A carpenter spends most of his or her time building things like houses and other buildings Use the peanut butter to hold the graham crackers together to build your dream house When finished, feel free to knock it down and enjoy it Pass out graham crackers and peanut butter During Monitor children, especially lower grade levels Sit with lower grade levels and assist with building the houses if necessary

Craft Activity Paper Airplane Crafting Materials Needed Paper Crayons, colored pencils, etc. Paper airplane designs Directions Craft Activity Prep Supply ample paper at each table for each kid to make an airplane Leave several copies of each airplane design at each table Set crayons and colored pencils out on each table Have kids find a seat at a table Explain activity Each kid will construct any paper airplane they wish They can decorate them in any way if they choose to After the craft activity is over, everyone will move to the gym area where a flying competition will take place During Craft Activity

Walk around, monitor status of kids Offer assistance to younger kids if needed Developmental Explanation 5-7 Think concretely and deal with specific content Airplane designs are simple, with folding lines printed on them 8-10 Think more logically and objectively Airplane designs slightly more complicated, and require a slightly greater ability to follow and interpret directions Give relatively more weight to language than to contextual clues Many airplane diagrams have written directions for each step 11-13 Develop problem-solving strategies and Engage in abstract thought Airplane designs are most complicated, many require some sort of abstract thinking and problem-solving Think sequentially Designs require the proper ordering of steps for successful completion In general Giving students the ability to choose the design they wish to complete should ensure a design that is developmentally appropriate while still challenging. The competition following the craft activity should encourage students to challenge themselves to make a good paper airplane.

Gym Activity Paper Airplane Flying Distance Contest Materials Needed Tape Tape Measure (something to measure distance) Directions Gym Activity Prep Use tape measurer and tape to mark out every 5 feet, starting at the baseline Do this 2 times, creating 3 lanes equally spaced apart During Gym Activity Have kids line up at the baseline according to their age group (ages 5-7 have one lane, 8-10 another, and 11-13 in another) Explain to the kids that they will each get 3 attempts, and their longest throw is the one that will be counted After their first attempt, ask them to go back in line and wait for their second attempt.

For any kids who appear restless waiting in line, ask them if they want to help be measurers or if they want to help in collecting the airplanes and handing them back to the other kids. The kid with the longest throw out of each grade will be announced at the end and will receive a small prize After Gym Activity Have kids bring their airplanes to their cubbies to collect at the end of the day. Developmental Explanation The kids will be broken up into their specified age groups.

Work Sheets
Name_________________________________ Grade Level: 4-5 You want to build a log cabin; the only problem is you do not know how big it will be or how much it will cost! Follow the directions on this sheet to figure those things out. 1. First, you need to figure out how many logs you will need to build your cabin. Your cabin will have four sides and each side will have 9 logs in it. How many logs will you need?

2. Now that you have figured out how many logs you will need, you will need to find out how much they cost! A log in Pennsylvania costs $50. How much money will it take to buy all of your logs? (Use the amount of logs that you found in the first problem!)

3. You need to get a commercial truck to deliver your logs. How many trucks do you have to choose from? (Look at poster!) 4. Once you have chosen a truck, you will need to figure out how long it will take the driver to get to your cabin. The driver left at 7am and got to your cabin at 10:20am. How long did it take him to get there?

Now that you have all of your logs, you will need to hire a carpenter to build your cabin! Below, draw the log cabin that you want that carpenter to build. Make sure that each side has 9 logs!

Name_________________________________ Grade Level: 6-7 You are the General Contractor in charge of building the new Lewisburg Area High School. Fill out this sheet to help you plan your new school! 1. First you need to understand your position, how many contractors will be at the work site and what is your job as the contractor?(refer to poster)

2. Your first task as the General Contractor is to figure out how much your materials will cost. (price of material x amount needed = total cost) a. Steel costs $5 per pound. For the school you will need 410 pounds of steel. How much money will you need to spend on steel?

b. Brick costs $100 per truck load. For the school you will need 35 truckloads. How much money will you need to spend on bricks?

c. There will be 115 doors throughout the entire building. A door costs $20. How much money will you need to spend on doors?

d. The school will need 700 lights. Each light costs $3 to buy. How much money will you need to spend on lights?

e. What is the TOTAL amount of money you will need to spend on materials? (Add up your previous four solutions!)

3. You need your shipment of bricks to arrive on Tuesday at 11:00am. The brickyard that you are getting them from is 60 miles away. The truck driver can drive 30 miles per hour with a load of bricks. What time will the driver need to leave the brickyard to make it to the school on time?

4. There are many challenges that you will have to face when trying to build a school. Write about some of the challenges you might face, and if you cant think of any, write about all of the different people (different jobs) that are part of building a school.

Name_________________________________ Grade Level: 6-7 You just spent time planning out some of the things you will need to build the new Lewisburg Area High School. Now draw out what you think the High School will look like. Label the different parts of your drawing. On the back of this page, write a paragraph explaining what you did.
