Analysis of Silence of the Lambs

To start we hear the music which is orchestral, it is a building tension and

makes the viewer feel a little uneasy and creeped out. The setting is in a
woods and it is foggy. The audience can already start to feel the idea of
the genre, as the music builds up and gets louder.

In the opening titles appear across the screen as we watch a girl climbing
and running. The titles appear after the name of the movie which is bold
and across the screen. As the names of the actors come up, the first name
is Jodie Foster who is well known, and can drag the audience in to
continue watching. The names of the actors come up with the biggest
names first and then the smaller names.

The camera is tracking her as we follow her and we learn about her. This
is introducing the main character. The main shot is a mid shot, as we see
what she is wearing and what she is doing. There are a range of close ups,
to show determination on her face. We get an insight to our main
character as we can see that she is sweating but she won’t stop. This
shows that she is focused, and has a goal. We can assume she is healthy
as she is running at speed and not stopping.

She’s then stopped by a man and we discover that she is an FBI agent,
and she has been requested. We follow her round as she makes her way
to the building that she is going to. We watch as other people star at her
and she doesn’t respond, indicating she doesn’t care what they think. She
highly respects the people who are in higher power as she refers to them
as ‘sir’.

The music gets louder her, and is a drumming sound to match her rhythm
and her focus. As she passes one of the corners there is a close up of
‘Behavioural Analysis Unit’ directing that this is where she wants to be.
The audience is still unaware of what she does, who she is, and why has
she been called here. The audience are questioning and follow her as we
are as intrigued as she is.

When she has entered the office she waits before she looks around, again
highlighting the respect that she has. But it also shows her lower status in
this line and that she is under power. But we see grim pictures of a new
murder case which the FBI is working on, and the harshness that they are
working in.

While she is in the meeting with the lead of the case, we learn that she is
smart and they believe in her as they ask for her help. We understand
that there is a risk in the task that she has been asked to do and she
stands there strong and happy to do so.
The audience is left worried about the main character as she is warned of
what to do and what not to. The seriousness in his tone directs the level of
importance of what he has to say. The audience listen intensively so that
we are able to understand the situation better and to make it clear to us
what she has to do.
