According to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS, as per its abbreviation in Spanish), there are 9,979 clothing companies in Mexico. In 2008, the textile and clothing industry contributed with 3.72 percent of Mexicos gross domestic product (GDP) in the manufacturing area. Mexico has a vast experience in manufacturing and exporting casual clothing, suits and lingerie. By focusing on these value added products, Mexico faces a great opportunity to offer fashionable products that are focused on niches with specific needs.

Mexico was the world's 9th largest leather goods and shoes supplier. Mexican exports of leather and shoes reached 554 million USD. The footwear and leather industries contributed to 1.24% of the country's GDP in the manufacturing industry.

The shoe industry market in Mexico generated a 2.7 billion dollar income in 2008 and recorded a 9.9 percent average annual growth rate between 2004 and 2008. It is estimated that it will sustain a 10.4 percent average annual growth rate from 2008 to 2013, generating 4.5 billion dollars at the end of such period. Regarding production volume, the Mexican shoe market grew 9.1 percent between 2004 and 2008 and it produced 273.5 million pairs. It is estimated that it will increase to 366.3 million pairs by the end of 2013, with an estimated 6 percent average annual growth rate between 2008 and 2013.
