NATIONALS WIRE

OPPONENT

WET, WILD AND WORTH THE WAIT

Jordan Zimmermann and 5 relievers scattered 8 hits and worked around a 3-hour,
17-minute rain delay to blank the Dodgers, 4-0, on Mon. night/Tue. morning in DC
Zimmermann tossed 4.0 scoreless-but-unrewarded innings, as he was saddled with
a n0-decision due to the rain delay...Denard Span and Anthony Rendon began the
Nationals first inning with a double and 2-run shot, respectively...Washingtons
6-pack of pitchers combined to walk none, strike out 10 and retire all 6 Dodgers
faced with RISP...the games final out was recorded at 1:21 a.m.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS

Dodgers President and CEO Stan Kasten served as Nationals President
for 5 seasons from 2006-10...Hall-of-Fame voice of the Dodgers, Vin
Scully, began his broadcasting career at WTOP radio in DC shortly after
graduating from Fordham University...Scott Hairston is nearly 4 years
younger than his brother, Jerry Jr., who played 75 games for the Nationals in 2011 and is currently an analyst for the Dodgers pre- and postgame shows on SportsNet LA...Oct. 19, 1981 is still to this day known as
Blue Monday in Montreal, as Rick Mondays 9th-inning solo homer
off Steve Rogers gave the Dodgers a 2-1 win in Game 5 of the NLCS and
halted the Expos lone post-season appearance.

RUNS AMOK
Despite significant injuries to Wilson Ramos, Ryan Zimmerman and Bryce Harper,
Washington currently ranks 4th in the NL having scored 4.28 runs per game...only
COL (5.71), MIA (4.78) and SFG (4.38) rank higher in the Senior Circuit.
By plating 137 runs in 32 games, Washingtons run production is up 21.2 percent
compared the initial 32 contests of the 2013 season (113 runs).
SCORE 4 = WIN MORE
The Nationals are 15-1 when scoring 4 or more runs and, conversely, just 3-13 when
limited to 3 or less runs by opposing pitchers.

THE SERIES
Washington snapped a 5-game losing streak in the series by winning
Mon.s opener, 4-0, in DC...Washington won its first series at Dodger
Stadium in 2005 (2 of 3), but is 0-7-1 in series play there since...the Nationals/Expos franchise has not won games on consecutive days at
Dodger Stadium since the 1999 Expos posted 3-0 and 10-7 victories on
Sept. 13 and 14.

HOMER HAPPY
Under Rick Schus tutelage, the Nationals have homered in 24 of 32 games to date
(75%)...in all of MLB, only the Rockies (26 of 34 games, 76%) and Blue Jays (25 of 32
78%) have hit at least one home run in more games this season than Washington.

ARMED AND DANGEROUS

The Nationals are currently tied with 3 other teams for 2nd in MLB with a 3.03 ERA
(ATL, 2.69)...in 16 games dating to Apr. 18, Steve McCattys staff has fashioned a
1.99 ERA (32 ER/145.0 IP) and allowed more than 4 runs just once (L2-7, Sat. at PHI).

K STREET
Nationals pitchers lead MLB in strikeouts (302), K/9.0 (9.45) and strikeout percentage (24.9)...the last DC team to pace MLB in strikeouts: the 1919 AL Nationals (536).

2014 AGAINST THE DODGERS

FISTER MAKES 5
The Nationals are 17-10 in games started by Stephen Strasburg (5-2), Gio Gonzalez
(5-2), Jordan Zimmermann (4-3) or Tanner Roark (3-3) and 1-4 in all other contests.
RHP Doug Fister appears likely to join the Nationals rotation this week after beginning 2014 on the 15-Day DL (right lat strain)...from 2011-13, the Tigers finished
46-32 (.613) in 75 regular- or post-season contests started by Fister.

RECENT TRANSACTIONS

BULLISH ON THE NATIONALS PEN

At 1.89 (22 ER/105.0 IP), Matt LeCroys bullpen is one of just 3 in MLB to currently
sport a sub-2.00 ERA for the season (Padres 1.76, Giants 1.88)...beyond the Nationals, SDP and SFG, no other team is below even 2.50 (the Pirates rank 4th at 2.71).
BETTER TO BE SAFE WITH SORI
Dating to Aug. 27, 2013, Rafael Soriano has tossed 24.0 consecutive scoreless innings, the longest consecutive scoreless innings streak of his career and in the
9-plus season history of the Nationals (2005-pres.), among relief pitchers.
SLOW STARTS, FANTASTIC FINISHERS
While the Nationals have run up a 17-run first-inning deficit (15 for, 32 against) this
year, Washington has outscored opponents, 63-25, in from the 7th inning on.
The Nationals pace MLB with a +38 run differential after the 6th inning (a.k.a. 7thinning+)...only CWS (+24) and PIT (+21) currently enjoy a differential beyond +20.
DCS COMEBACK KIDS
Washingtons 9 comeback wins are tied for 3rd in MLB behind only the Tigers (11)
and Brewers (10)...like the Nationals, the following clubs also have 9 come-frombehind wins in 2014: Mets, Padres, Rockies, White Sox.
MEET MATT WILLIAMS
Matt Williams, 48, was named the 5th field manager of the Nationals on Oct. 31,
2013...the managerial position is the first of his career...joins the Nationals organization after spending the previous 4 seasons on Kirk Gibsons coaching staff in ARI...
Williams hit .268 (1878-for-7000) with 338 2B, 378 HR, 1218 RBI and 997 runs in 1866
games spanning 17 decorated seasons with ARI (98-03), CLE (1997) and SFG (8796)...Williams was a 5-time All-Star (90, 94-96, 99) and a 4-time recipient of the
Rawlings Gold Glove (91, 93-94, 97) and Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger (90, 9394, 97) awards...his 359 career homers as a third baseman ranks 5th on the all-time
list (Mike Schmidt 509, Eddie Matthews 486, Chipper Jones 389, Graig Nettles 368).
Williams reached the postseason on 6 occasions, won 3 pennants and claimed
a World Championship (2001 Diamondbacks)...in all, played in 51 postseason
games/18 World Series contests...sports previous managerial experience gained
with the Salt River Rafters (AFL division title, 12) and the Double-A Mobile BayBears (skippered final 5 weeks of 07 after Brett Butler suffered a mild stroke)...
Williams baseball DNA traces back to his grandfather, outfielder Bert Griffith,
who was a member of the 1924 World Champion AL Nationals...born in Bishop,
CA and a native of Carson City, NV, Williams is an alum of UNLV.

IN THE COMMUNITY
MAY 10
Baseball Tomorrow Fund/Nationals Field Maintenance Clinic - Developed
in 13, the Nationals and the BTF partner to host a Field Maintenance Clinic
at Nationals Park. Nationals groundskeepers instruct adult representatives from local youth baseball/softball leagues on the fundamentals of
grounds keeping and techniques to keep youth fields playable. The BTF
also provides a $10,000 grant to a local non-profit organization for the
upkeep and renovation of a baseball field in the District of Columbia.

DATE IN DC BASEBALL HISTORY

May 6
2007 - For the first time in the rich history of Major League Baseball, 6
players with the first name Ryan (Church, Langerhans, Wagner, Zimmerman, Dempster, Theriot) play in the same game. The Cubs sport just 2
Ryans, but somehow edge the Nationals, 4-3, in 10 innings at Wrigley Field.
