Production reliability is essential in offshore and maximum productivity
is important anywhere. The control of sand flow in unconsolidated
formations can be one of the most critical problems in down-hole well
completion.

The sand control technology has developed over the years
involving chemical and mechanical solutions. Still the
simplest and by far the most reliable and effective method
of sand control is the use of sand-retention:
SLOTTED LINERS & WELL SCREENS

Nowadays an open hole completion with stand alone
screens is a well balanced solution for highly deviated and
horizontal wells where sand control has to be achieved
without gravel packing.

H H. .P P. . W We el l l l s sc cr re ee en n is your partner providing a total range of
sand-retention products starting from slotted liners to
pre-packed screens.

All products from H H. .P P. . W We el l l l S Sc cr re ee en n have precise slot
openings. They can be used directly in the formation as a
stand alone screen, with any further assistance of gravel
packs.

To choose the most suitable sand control product, the
following factors need to be considered. Still, the most
important single design factor of any sand retention
product is the correct sizing of the slot opening in relation
to the formation grain size.
All our products will bring you:
A low risk of plugging.
A high inflow area.
The ability to produce fines allowing increased well
productivity.
A simple installation, similar as running liners.
A mechanical robustness.
Low total costs compared to wire mesh or
expendable screen types and techniques where
fluid pumping is involved.

The design obj ective for well screens is stoppage of sand infiltration
without excessive reduction of flow capacity. In order to determine the
proper gauge for well screens, as well as, the proper gravel pore space,
the formation grain size must be known.

W Wi it th ho ou ut t G Gr ra av ve el l P Pa ac ck k
In this situation the sand control is base on the bridging theory and slot
openings must be sized in direct relationship to the formation sands.
Sand bridges are formed across the slot
opening when the slot opening is about 2
times the sand grain diameter, preventing
further particle movement. If the size of
the grains varies, retention of the larger
particles causes smaller particles to bridge
behind them. To achieve stable bridges the
individual sand grains should bridge on,
rather than in, the slot openings.

In formations with relatively coarse-grained, high-permeability sands,
controlling sand and maintaining the wells productivity is successful
when a certain amount of formation sand can be tolerated.
In stand-alone screen completions without the use of back-surging or
pump-in treatments, the finer particles are not effective removed from
the sand-face of the near-wellbore sand mass. If these particles are
retained on the screen/ slotted liner, they can eventually plug it and
reduce well productivity. However, if they flow through the screen or
slotted liner and do not plug it or form a sand-plug in the well, the well
will produce indefinitely despite the fact that sand production has not
been completely eliminated.

For sands with a broad size
distribution, a generally accepted
guideline for designing a screen is
to specify a slot width that is 2
times as large as the 10 percentile
grain diameter. This sizing allows
the finer particles to be produced,
resulting in a natural gravel pack
formed from the larger sand
grains. For more uniform sands,
screen openings equal to the 10-15
percentile formation sand diameter
should be used. For a good result
for non-uniform fine sand, we can
take the 40 percentile sand
diameter analysis.
The recommended slot opening can be read off the horizontal scale.
(The 10%diameter is the sieve size through which 90%, by weight, of the total formation sample will pass)

W Wi it th h G Gr ra av ve el l p pa ac ck k
Gravel packing is probably the most popular mechanical sand-control
technique used in water, oil and gas wells. The gravel pack stabilizes the
borehole and filters the formation sand from the flow, while producing
only very fine particles that can move through the gravel pack. Screens or
slotted liners used in combination with a gravel pack function as a gravel
retention device and need a different design. Ideally, slots should be as
wide as possible while retaining gravel without restricting flow of fluids
and interstitial fines. The loss of even a small amount of gravel may have
a negative effect on the completion. Therefore, slot openings need to be
sized for complete gravel retention. Proper sizing can be determined
from sieve analysis of the gravel.

Example of a gravel pack design

The slot should not be wider than 50%to 70%of the smallest gravel-size
diameter to avoid production of gravel.
Because the flow capacity of screens and slotted liners are high, sizing
the slot width on the low side will not restrict well productivity and will
tend to avoid production of gravel.

We manufacture our screen products according to customer
requirements. The casing, liners or base pipe can be selected from
standard API grade K55 up to 110cr13 for special conditions.

In particular corrosive or hot environments, a special alloy may be
selected. The well screens can be manufactured from Stainless steel 304,
316L, 904L, Duplex, Superduplex, Hastelloy C276, SMO etc. We keep in
stock many exotic materials, so please do not hesitate to ask for specific
requirements.

Contrary to the un- and low alloyed steels, stainless steel i s not so much
exposed by a general abrasive corrosion over the full surface, but would
under certain circumstance suffer from a selective corrosion.
In order to meet Pitting and Stress Cracking corrosions a great number of
steels and alloys have been developed.

For strains caused by chlorides the use of steels with raising chromium
and molybdenum contents is recommended. For strains caused by sulfide
all copper- nickel alloys offer higher resistance then the alloys with
increased molybdenum contents.

Common questions

The sizing of slot openings in well screens is critical and should match the formation sand properties. For optimal sand control, slot openings are typically sized at about twice the sand grain diameter to create a stable sand bridge across the slots, preventing further particle movement. It involves evaluating the formation grain size and employing guidelines that suggest slot widths 2 times the 10 percentile grain diameter for broad distributions and matching 10-15% diameter for uniform sands. For finer non-uniform sands, a 40 percentile analysis might be used .

Sieve analysis is crucial in determining the appropriate slot size for gravel pack design. It involves analyzing the gravel size distribution to ensure that slot openings are designed for complete retention of the gravel while maintaining optimal flow capacity. This analysis helps avoid gravel production, which would negatively impact well performance. Proper slot sizing through sieve analysis ensures the gravel pack remains intact, thus stabilizing the borehole and improving well productivity by allowing only the finest particles to pass while filtering out undesirable larger particles .

Selecting the right sand control equipment for a well site should prioritize factors such as formation particle size distribution, well design (e.g., vertical or horizontal), operational conditions (e.g., pressure and temperature), and material compatibility. The correct slot sizing relative to the formation grain size is critical for effective sand retention. Additionally, consideration of the environment, such as corrosive conditions, guides material choice to prevent equipment failure. Operational feasibility, such as the installation ease and maintenance cost, also plays a significant role in equipment selection .

The open area percentage in well screens is directly proportional to their flow capacity and inversely proportional to pressure loss. A higher open area allows for greater flow of liquids through the screen, reducing pressure loss due to less resistance. The permeability of the screen, as indicated by the open area, is a key factor in determining flow dynamics; higher open area increases fluid passage and maintains well productivity. Pressure loss across the screen can be mathematically expressed as V² x (1.8 - OA/100)^2 / (20 x g), where OA is open area and V is velocity .

V-shaped slot openings in rod-base screens enhance well operation efficiency by preventing clogging, which can impede flow and reduce productivity. The design allows for effective sand filtration while maintaining high flow rates through the screen. The non-clogging characteristic ensures that larger particles bridge the slot openings, while smaller particles pass through, reducing the risk of plugging. This improves the well’s operational efficiency and extends the longevity of the screen by lowering maintenance needs and maintaining consistent fluid production .

Pipe-base screens typically present a reliable yet cost-effective solution for sand-free production, particularly in vertical and horizontal wells. Compared to other types, such as pre-packed or perforated casings, the production cost considerations include material selection, manufacturing complexity, and installation ease. Pipe-base screens offer high tensile, load, and collapse strength, along with accurate slot openings, all of which contribute to reduced risk and increased operational efficiency, thus lowering long-term costs. The simplicity and reliability of the installation process further reduce the production cost relative to more complex screen systems that may involve additional components like gravel packs .

Material selection for well screens in challenging environments involves choosing those with high corrosion resistance. Preferred materials include stainless steels like 304 and 316L, and alloys such as Duplex, Superduplex, Hastelloy C276, and SMO. These materials address specific corrosive challenges—stainless steels are less exposed to general abrasive corrosion but may suffer selective corrosion under certain conditions. For resistance to chloride-induced stress cracking, steels with higher chromium and molybdenum contents are recommended. Copper-nickel alloys offer improved resistance to sulfide-induced stresses .

Gravel packing, when used with well screens, stabilizes the borehole and filters formation sand while allowing very fine particle production through the gravel pack. Benefits include enhanced borehole stabilization and effective sand filtration, which supports well productivity. Potential drawbacks include the need for careful design to ensure the gravel remains intact without being produced, as slot openings must be sized correctly to prevent gravel loss. Incomplete retention or loss of any gravel may negatively affect well completion and productivity .

Sand control technology impacts well productivity by preventing sand infiltration while maintaining optimal flow capacity. Key challenges it addresses include managing sand flow in unconsolidated formations and ensuring production reliability and maximum productivity, especially in offshore and horizontal wells. The main goal is to balance sand retention with flow capacity, often using methods like slotted liners and well screens to achieve a stable sand bridge without excessive flow reduction .
