“Oh yar, I could not awake up early in the morning, today I should wake up early, my
friend is waiting a love message from me, says Ali to himself, as he waken up at 10
O’clock .It is the morning of February 14th, Most of readers are hopefully familiar to this
specific day. The day when the livers of the whole worlds send messages of love to their
beloved ones by different means of communications. It is commonly known as
“Valentine’s Day”. In our country, the celebrations related to this specific day are started
to this specific day are started a decade ago. First, like every new tread, upper class had
adopted the day. They started to celebrate the day with joy and enthusiasm .It has now
spread among middle class of our country also mostly students celebrate this day warmly.
They go to their institution with special kind of dressing and demand “special pocket
money” from their parent’s .A few days before the Valentine’s Day is coming.
The mouth of February has deep roots with the arrival of spring season .In ancient Rome
February was the official beginning of spring and it was considered a time for
purification. There is a feeling of happiness and the whole scene of natural environment
is changing at the start of second month of the year .The whole environment, which has
become sad and gloomy due to the chill and cold, is removal and a wave of new
atmosphere is arose. All trees and plants are felt to be dressed in new clothes. Now leaves
are shooted or branches and then lush green colour is looked very attractive to our eyes.
We are spending a very busy life. Everyone is engaged to perform his duties, whether
there duties are official or educational in nature. One has no time to spend with nature
beautiful scenes. We cannot understand the hidden message of freshly blossomed
AFIKIS
flowers.
“Happy valentine Day ,
Little birds are also started chirping to announce the coming season to spring. Their
S pleasen awakened human beings. Enchanted fragment of flowers is smelt all around.
Bright colour show an emotion of joy and excitement .Man wants to some recreation in
his life. Sometimes he enjoys by flying kites and sometime he organizes spring festivals.
Valentine’s day is also a source to escapes from daily routine life as well as we can
express our feelings to someone we love.
There are different stories about the beginning of this romantic day. First valentine was a
priest who severed during the third century in Rome, when emperor Claudius11 thought
that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he made law that
young people should not got married. Valentine realized the injustice of the Claudius .He
continued to perform marriages for young lovers secretly. When the King comes to know
about his activity, He ordered to kill him. Another point of view is that Valentine may
have been killed for attempted to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they
were often beaten and troubled.
Valentine sent the first valentine greeting .He fell in love with his Jailor’s daughter.
Before his death, he wrote her a letter which he signed as” From your valentine”. This
expression is still used today.
All stories about valentine showed him as heroic, sympathetic and the most important
romantic figure .It is fact that valentine was one of the most popular saint in England and
France during the middle ages.
Some people had made research on the history of valentine’s and they concluded that this
day is celebrated to commemorate the death anniversary of the hero of lovers. He was
martyred in the middle of the second month of the year.
Another trend was common in ancient Rome. They arranged a lottery. Man would draw
the names of maidens from a box .A man picked one name and she should be his
companion for one year whether she wanted to live with him or not, It was compulsory
for her to live with the man who had won her in the lottery. Pope of that time order, that
the box should contain the names of saint. He wanted to stop this uncivilized practice.
This event was happened in the month of February.
We cant say about when the first valentine’s day was celebrated but evidence is shown
about the first valentine’s card Charles, Duke of ordeans sent the first card to his wife in
the year 1415A.D. He was imprisoned in the tower of dondon at that time. Tread of
sending cards was spread during the Victorian age Queen Victoria sent hundreds of
perfumed cards to her retainers.
Now preparation are started to celebrate the specific day. Girls stitched new and special
dresses. Colour of their dresses is mostly red and black. Combination of theirs colour
show the emotion of happiness and sorrow at the same time. They wear red colour to
celebrate the joy and liveliness on coming spring season and becoming a companion of
some one, while the mixing of black colour is due to pay tribute to saint valentine. They
show regard on his death anniversary.
Our new generation, especially students who are studying in co-education institutions
celebrate Valentines Day more warmly. They buy gifts for theirs friends. There are a
large variety of gifts available in market to give at this special occasion.
Many things are made heart shaped like lamps, candle, and chocolate cake, photo frames,
jewllory boxes, ballons, statues, mugs, ashtray, watches, cufflink etc. There is a big range
of prince and decoration pieces to be given on such happy day. There is also a great
variation of prices as everyone could buy gift for someone very special according to
one’s financial circumstance.
There are many non-serious person also appeared at this day. They only appeared at this
day. They only enjoy themselves by sending cards and love messages to opposite gender
Farah Abbas, an ex-student of the Punjab university told an event related to valentine’s
day .In her words,” A few years ago when I was a student of department of Mass
Communications P.U, me along with my tow fellows made a mischief with our classmate
.We bought some cards, wrote them to our class fellow (female members) from some of
the male class fellows. Then we posted our masterpieces to those girls, writing the
address of our received by which they were concerned. After receiving those cards, the
girls become angry with senders. They told them that it was only a mischief done by
some other members but girls did not listen to them. It was settled down on a cup of tear
or cold drink along with some snacks for the whole class. Boys paid the bill after
receiving a good treat, we told truth about cards. Everybody in the class enjoyed all this
very much”.
It was a harmless mischief some people, who prolonged their saying made the matter
serious. When opponent is become fully involved, they told him/her good-bye. It is
created very bad effect on psychology of the victim. So during doing some mischief it
should be keep in mind the reaction and effects on the person who is becoming the target
of your mischief.
Farshed Arshed .a student of 3rd year at a private institute sent thirty cards to his beloved
ones .He says about his activity,” There is so much uncertainty in circumstances, so I
keep my friends stands by, I am acting on the proverb “tu nahim tou aur sahi, aur nahin
tou aur sahi”
Mrs.Sajida Ejaz ,a senior school teacher comments a valentine’s day in the following
words,” We have adopted a lot of things from west .Valentine’s day is one of them. We
should discourage to celebrate this day. It has no positive aspect .We should not blindly
copy each and every thing from west. We have our own culture and we have our own
culture and own festivals. There is no concept of freely meeting of young boys and girls
in Islam .So parents teachers and there big participate “media” should try to discourage
such occasion like basant, valentine, Holy Divali etc”
There are different points of views about this festival. There is so much worrier in our
life. Normally people misuse their freedom. They adopt western culture without keeping
in mind their positive and negative effects. It should always keep in mind our own
limitation and boundaries .It is not fair to leave our social and religious thoughts. Our
new generation should realize all environment and circumstances. There is no badness if
we celebrate this festival in a right way .Our new generation think only in one
dimension .In fact we can pay our respectful and loving wishes to other relative also
Father, mother
, Uncle, aunt, brother, sister or a very old friend. We can share our feeling to our dears
who live thousands of miles away from are.
We can also wish to someone who is forgotten by us due to own busy life. Actually
nothing has any evil in it. It is our attitude, which makes it good or bad.
