The topic I chose for my project is social class. In my visual essay I did not state a name
or theme my PowerPoint because I feel that every person who looks at my visual essay will
interpret it differently. I want every person who looks at my essay to think about their own lives
and thoughts when they are looking through it. My pictures pretty much guided my viewers in
the right direction. I also put some comepare pictures, those pictures pretty much show my
argument. I did not want to add quotes or too much text on to my slides because like I said
before I want my audience go interpret the text. I did add as little text as I would to inform the
audience of what the pictures are about or just a statement I wanted to make.
During the process of this project I changed my theme and topic three times. Some
people say did not do something if your heart is not in it, right? Well my heart was not in the
previous topics I knew it would be a lot more work to keep changing topics but I know it would
be worth it. During my last project I was not able to choose a topic I wanted either because it
was a group decision or because the topic was chosen for me. I liked that this paper had a little
more freedom.
The more freedom a person has with a project the more creative the person has to be.
Being creative doses not come easy to me, but I tried my best to come up with something
creative wile still being argumentative and analytical. The argument I chose for my PowerPoint
is social class and Mexican American Immigrants. I compared Mexican American immigrants and
other earthlings; I compared them with different action they take and their similarities. Many
people including myself did not realize how dangerous tit is to cross the border and migrate to a
different country. I tried to show the struggles of migrating in my visual essay by comparing
Mexican American immigrants to birds who can fly across the boarder because they can just fly
over and Mexican Americans cant. That same photograph from slide 2 and 18 is symbolic of
what immigrants want to once they get to the United States, they want to fly in prosperity for
them and their family.
Prospering in the United States can have a price to pay. Towards the middle of my first
and second set of slides you can see a picture of a slave with whip scars on his back and a
picture of a man named Anastacio Hernandez he was killed by the border patrol as he plead for
mercy. In slide nine I compare slaves to Farm workers, the pictures do not look very different. In
the next two slides I put pictures of two different people migrating to our Countries. It also
shows the two very different types of ways they migrated. Then I put a picture of the United
States, and in the picture these is a lot of pictures of all the different types of races that
migrated here in the last. Basically showing that this is a land of immigrants.
Most of the people I know come to this land of immigrants to work. The last section of
the slides in my visual essay is photographs of hands. They symbolize the hands on hard work
that is done b most immigrants. I also made all of these images in clack and white. The reason
f4or that is so people cannot judge them. They cannot see what race the people are, nothing,
they can only look to see that this is people.
In my very last slide for both sections I use hands again. In this picture represents the
happiness everyone hopes and expects to get one you come to the United States. The pictures
above this one show the hard annual work in order for you to get the American Dream. Very few
of the people who come to this country actually succeed and accomplish all that they said they
would. It is because they realize that life is difficult here. Most people do not realize that living in
the United States is hard and expensive. My grandfather always said we are sold here in the U.S
because if you dont work and if you work you cant afford to stop clicking the online midterm.
My most powerful slide is the last slide in my paper. I learned to add a lot. It
shows that even through all that once person has been through weather it is migration,
having a child or anything. We need to do everything we can to nurture this evolving
movement, our ever evolving global society, and keep it moving always in the direction
of love, in the direction of life (Velcrow Ripper). We all need to realize and talk about
what is going on in the world around us.
Another reason I decided to chose this theme for my visual easy is because I want
to bring awareness to the people who look at my essay for incase they do not know The
challenge is to come up with more complex understandings of where we are, more global
awareness of what connects Americans with what is happening with suffering and
oppressed people all around the world (hooks). The oppression Mexican go through as
immigrants needs to be shown.
In conclusion doing this paper was lots of fun. I think everyone will understand
my point and my argument. If they dont I will just say it during the slides, that way there
is no room for misunderstanding. This land of immigrants is a place where everyone
wants to run away to. I see this as a beautiful thing, and try to give a little but of a deeper
though to it.
