Feasibility Studies and Engineering Design

Defining the best solution to your sediment problems

Geosyntec brings experience in providing comprehensive solutions to the
assessment, remedy evaluation, design, and remedy implementation of sites
with impacted sediments and surface waters. This practice includes a broad
range of sediment management capabilities at aquatic sites and extensive
experience in developing sediment management strategies for sites ranging
from small creeks to large lakes, rivers, and marine harbor systems. We have
performed sediment projects beginning with the investigative phase,
developed focused feasibility studies that are based on site-specific
information, followed through with our services through the implementation
of the remedy, and supported clients through long-term monitoring.
We have demonstrated experience in the assessment and remediation of
sites where sediments have been impacted by a wide range of contaminants
from multiple, comingled sources. Our multidisciplinary approach brings
together nationally-recognized in-house specialists in engineering, ecology
and biological sciences, risk assessment and applied toxicology, and earth
sciences to address the complex issues associated with contaminated
sediment management. As an example, Geosyntec staff provided
environmental program management for the impacts analysis, feasibility
study, and engineering design for the dredging, treatment, and disposal of
approximately 735,000 m
3
of PAH-contaminated sediment and 370,000 m
3
of
uncontaminated sediments adjacent to the former BHP Newcastle Steel Mill
along the South Arm of the Hunter River in New South Wales, Australia. We
also provided senior technical review of the design and integration with the
regulatory approval process. A feasibility study that evaluated potential
environmental impacts, constructability, remedy effectiveness, and costs of
five distinct remedial options was completed in 6 months and was followed
by a pilot study of the preferred remedial alternative.
Geosyntec recognizes the environmental complexities and processes
associated with sediment remediation, and we develop feasibility studies that
are based on the unique, site-specific factors that need to be taken into
account for successful remedy evaluation and implementation. We apply our
expertise in the physical, biological, and chemical characterization of
sediments, upland watersheds, surface waters, marshes, and biota to assess
potential risks to ecological systems and human health and evaluate
remedies that meet the client and regulatory objectives for remediation and
restoration.
