CHAPTER 1

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT:
The study undertaken strives to make an attempt to understand the perception of our
Alumni regarding the alma mater. Alumni are our brand ambassador and it is very
important to understand their perceptions regarding the alma mater. They are the ones
who project us in the outer world and help build our reputation.A proper
understanding of their perception help us know more about the alma mater and if
necessary take steps to control any deviation.

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT AND OBJECTIVES:

The underlying problem is that alumni perception is subject to various aspects of the
alma mater and we do not have knowledge regarding their perception. Until and
unless we cannot identify the gap of what we think of their perception and what
actually they perceive it will be difficult for us to bridge the gap.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:
1. To understand the perception of the alma mater regarding the alma mater.

2. To sort out ways to improve our relation.

CHAPTER 2

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

2.1 RESEARCH AN INTRODUCTION
Research is the matter of raising questions and then trying to find an answer. In other
words research means a sort of investigation describing the facts that some problem is
being investigated to shed for generalization. Therefore research is the activity of
solving problem which adds new knowledge and developing of theory as well as
gathering of evidence to test generalization. There are basically four parts involved in
any research investigation-:
I. Defining the problem
II. Formulating hypothesis
III. Collecting the facts and data
IV. Analyzing the facts and drawing conclusions
The main motives behind any research are:
i. To gain knowledge about hidden facts.
ii. To innovate new concepts and theories.
iii. To know the cause and effect relationship.
iv. To understand, analyze and explore the phenomena.
v. To face the challenge in solving unsolved problems
2.2 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research always starts with a question or a problem. Its purpose is to answer to
questions through the application of the scientific methods. It is a systematic and
intensive study directed towards a more complete knowledge of the subject studies.
Once the problem is defined properly then one can easily chalk out the Objectives for
the research.

3

Problem Definition
A problem well defined is half-solved Poorly defined problems create confusion
and do not allow the researcher to develop a good research design. The first step in
research is formulating a research problem. It is the most important stage in applied
research as poorly defined problems will not yield useful results. It may be mentioned
that the problem formulation from the researchers point of view represents
translating the management problem into a research problem. After a problem has
been chosen, the next task is to formulate it precisely. Formulation implies a clear
statement or definition of the problem.
A complete problem definition must specify each of the following:
1. Sample and sampling units
2. Time and space boundaries
3. Specific environmental conditions

2.3 RESEARCH DESIGN

Objective: To know about the perception of CMSDU alumni towards the
Alma Mater.

Type of research:
Qualitative research design was used while conducting the project. The major
purpose of the study is to find out the alumnis perception regarding the alma
mater. The study was based on the information collected with the help of
Questionnaire method.
Research Method/Technique:
In the project report I have used following techniques while conducting my
study:
Analysis of documents
Mass mailing was done for the purpose of the study
Questionnaire:A structured designed comprehensive questionnaire
was framed for data collection from the alumni.

4

Research Data-:
Data is the key activity of research. The design of the data Collecting method
is backbone of research design. Data constitute the foundation of statistical
analysis and interpretation. Hence the first step in statistical work is to obtain
data.
Data can be obtained from two important sources, namely:
Primary Data:
Primary data are gathered for the specific purpose or for a specific research
project, consist of original information for the fulfillment of project objective.
When the data are required for the particular study can be found neither in the
internal record of the enterprises nor in published sources. In some cases it
may become necessary to collect original data.
Primary data can be collected in following ways:-
Observation
Survey
Secondary Data:
Secondary data are the data, which already exists somewhere. Secondary data
provide starting point for research and after that the advantage of low cost and
ready availability. Secondary data can be divided into two types:
Internal data
External data
When researcher uses the data that has already been collected by other data are
called secondary data. Secondary data can be obtained from journals i.e.
internal sources report, government publication and books, professional bodies
etc. Internal data are reports and memos generated within an organization to
facilitate its operations and annual report. External data are those specially
produce for outside consumption.

2.4 Research Limitations

1.Time constraint was one of the factor limiting the scope of the study.
2.Since responses from all the alumni could not be solicited this itself limits the scope
of the study.
3.Some of the important aspects may be left out and as a result it may not proof to be
a comprehensive study.
4.Since alumni could not be physically interacted with ,this limits the scope of the
study.

CHAPTER 3

3.1 PERCEPTION
In simple sense, perception means perceiving i.e., giving meaning to the environment
around us. It is perceiving of objects what we are faced with.
According to Udai Pareek and othersPerception can be defined as the process of
receiving ,selecting, organizing ,interpreting ,checking and reacting to sensory stimuli
or data.
Stephen P.Robbins defines perception as a process by which individuals organize
and interpret their sensory impressions in order to give meaning to their
environment.
Now, perception can safely be defined as a process which involves seeing, receiving,
selecting, organizing, interpreting and giving meaning to the environment. The
functioning of the whole process is influenced by the individual doing the perceiving,
the objects or events being perceived, and the environment in which perception occurs.

3.2FACTORS AFFECTING PERCEPTION
Factors are of 2 kinds-Internal(Endogenous)factor and External(exogenous) factors.
INTERNAL FACTORS
These factors reside in person concern. These include ones needs, desires,
personality and experience.
Needs and Desires: An individuals perception about stimuli is
influenced by his needs and desires at that time.Perception varies
depending upon variations in his/her needs and desires from time to
time.
Personality: Closely related to needs and desires is the personality of
the perceiver, which affects what is attended or perceived in the given
situation.
Experience: Experience and knowledge serve as basis for perception.
While ones successful experience enhances his/her perceptive ability,
failure erodes his/her self-confidence.

7

EXTERNAL FACTORS
The external factors relate to what is to be perceived and situation. These are
size, Siintensity, frequency, status, etc.
Size: The principle of size says that the larger the object, the more is
the probability that it is perceived. Size attracts the attention of the
individual. A full-page spread advertisement attracts more attention
than a few lines in a classified section.
Intensity:Intensity is closely related to size.More intense the
stimuli, more likely it is to be perceived. As an example,a loud noise or
strong odour will be noticedmore than a soft sound and weak odour.
Frequency/Repetition:Therepeatition principle states that a repeated
external stimulus is more attention-getting than a single one.

Contrast:As per this principle, the external stimuli which stands out
against the background will receive more attention.Forexample,Plant
safety signs with black lettering on a yellow background or white
lettering on a red background are more attention-attracting

Status: Status held by an individual also influences his/her perception
about things or events.

Movement: The movement principle states that people pay more
attention to a moving object than the stationary ones.People will be
attracted more by a running train than one standing on the platform.

3.3 HOW TO IMPROVE PERCEPTION?
Perception can be improved by making various attempts. Following are the
important ones that can help improve his/her perception:
Perceiving Oneself Accurately:In order to perceive others
accurately, one first needs to perceive oneself accurately. Therefore, one
needs to improve more awareness about himself/herself.Frequent and
better interaction with peers and open communication with others are
helpful in perceiving oneself more accurately.
Be empathetic:Empathy means to be able to see a situation as it is
perceived by other people. In a way,it is like putting your feet in
anothers shoes.
Having positive attitudes: Positive attitudes makes ones perception
positive or more accurate

CHAPTER 4

DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

Interpretation refers to the analysis of generalization, Interpretation and results.
Interpretation can be conceived as a part of analysis.
Interpretation in a simple way means the translation of statistical result into an
intelligible description.

Out of the 24 respondents,5 perceive the CMS environment to be too good, 17
perceives it to be good and 2 perceives to be not so good.
Education system is perceived as uptodate by 7 respondents, market oriented by 9
of them, outdated by 3 and 5 dont know what actually they perceive it to be.
Relationship with faculties was perceived too good by only 2 of the respondents
and good by the remaining 22 respondents.
The relationship with peers is perceived too good by 3 respondents, good by
16 and not so good by 5 respondents.
The relationship with juniors is perceived good by 16 and not so good by 7 of
the respondents.
The transparency in the system is perceived as too good by 4
respondents, good by 12 and not so good by 7
The perception of the alumni towards the various cultural events organized by the
Centre is too good as per 7 respondents, good as per 14 of them and 2
perceives it to be not so good.
Various engagements the alma mater maintains with its alumni like alumni meet
every year is perceived as too good by 3 respondents, good by 19 respondents
and not so good by 2 of them.
Cordiality and warmth of the reception whenever the alumni visits the alma mater
is perceived too good by 3 respondents,19 perceives it good and not so
good by 2 of them.
Out of the 24 respondents, 5 says that their perception towards the alma mater is
influenced by outsiders and 19 says it is not such.
Asked whether the alumni would like to be here in the alma mater if opportunity
occurs and 22 of them responded in positive and 2 in the negative.

17

CHAPTER 6

6.RECOMMENDATION
a) The education system needs to be upgraded more.Any major recent changes in
any fields of business administration and popular concepts regarding any field in
the wide arena of Business Admistration should be introduced in.
b) The relationship with juniors can be strengthened further by equal participation
with the juniors in all aspects.
c) Though few of the respondents object to the transparency in the system but free
flow of information via all medias like social networking, internet, etc. speaks
volume of the crystal clear transparency prevalent in our system. But it is better to
keep certain things under the veil.
d) More efforts should be forged through different ways to mould the perception of
the alumni and the outsiders in the favourable side.

18

CHAPTER 7

CONCLUSION

The undertaken study can be concluded as the perception of the alumni is very vital to
improve any significant aspects the alma mater is lagging in and also provide valuable
insights regarding such. It was found that the perception of the CMSDU alumni
regarding the alma mater in most of the aspects was Good but relationship among
peers, juniors should be farther strengthened by creating more scope for interaction
and at the same time the Education system also needs some changes to be introduced
in.
