It is one of the most important monuments dating from
the Middle Ages (11-15 c). Its 466 ft high spire was completed
in 1439. It remained the highest in Western Europe until the 19th c.

The cathedral Outstanding churches
The Covered Bridges
They have kept their name although the roofs disappeared
in the 18th century. They are overlooked by four 14th century towers,
remains of the old city walls.

Formerly the quarter of the tanners, millers and fishers, it is now a heaven
of peace in the heart of the city. The streets are lined with half-timbered
16th and 17th c. houses with vast internal courtyards and equally vast,
steeply sloping roofs with open lofts where the skins used to be dried.

The Orangerie
park
is a cool heaven in the heart of summer. Empress Josephine loved
walking there when she stayed in the pavilion named after her.
With the boats on the lake, the little zoo, the storks and the chil-
dren's games, the park is a very popular place with the locals.
Historic wine-cellar
of the Strasbourg Hospital
Founded in 1395, it bears witness to the towns wine-making
tradition. It has a number of unique treasures, masterpieces
of barrel-making, and even a wine dating from 1472.
