Movies and film have are a large part of entertainment in

the 21st century but the creation of films was started in the 1890 some
of these films could have been under a minute long and would usually
present a single scene, authentic or staged, of everyday life. There was
little to no cinematic technique: no editing and usually no camera
movement.
Thomas Edison the first movie was made in 1895 and was born in France
and New Jersey invented the first film. The year 1900 conveniently
marks the emergence of the first motion pictures that can be considered
as 'films' - at this point, film-makers begin to introduce basic editing
techniques and film narrative. The French capital experienced the first
commercial movie screening of films made by brothers Louis and Auguste
Lumiere. Let's take another journey back to the early days
of filmmaking and learn more about the work of the Lumiere
Brothers. 1
st
film shot by the Lumiere brothers was called Employees
Leaving the Lumiere factory shot in 1895. 20
th
of December 1895, the
Lumiere bothers projected film in Paris by shining light through the film,
projecting it.
1896 the brothers created a short video of train coming to the audience
which scared them, some ran out the cinema the purpose they made this
was to make it seem to the audience as if they train is coming to
them this engaged the viewer because it gave the effect that they were
in the film.
George Meiles created jump cutting in 1899, the film was called
Cendrillion the purpose of this was to jump from one screen to another.
The worlds 1
st
female director was Abel Pilashe 1
st
close used was in 1901,
directed by George Albert Smith they done this so show whats happening
and emotion in the character this was first used on Trill becomes Story
1903 used cutes. Edwin Stanton Porter called The Life of and American
fireman directed this film.
The last decade a large number of movies have been shot digitally. Some of
them are independent, low-budget productions, while others are major
Hollywood or European productions.
Here are 5 digital videos; Transformers: Age of Extinction, Iron Man 3, The
Smurfs 2, After Earth, Parker

Parallel editing:
Parallel editing is when two or more scenes are happening at the same
time but from different locations. In the opening scene of The
godfather is an example of them using this technique because while the
guy is at his ceremony meanwhile they are also showing people going
around killing different gangsters.

Shot reverse shot:
Shot reverse shot is when two characters are having a conversation
opposite each other. The camera focuses on one character in the scene
for a few seconds then it goes to the opposite character. An example of a
film that has a shot reverse shot is Hunger games and it shows the two
characters talking and the shots changing opposite sides.

Continuity/Seamless:
Continuity is when different shots are used to maintain continuous
narrative action. An example of an action film, which has continuity, is
The Dark Knight Rises and it is a scene of Batman fighting Bane. This
clip shows how continuity is used in the film.

Jump cut:

Jump cut is an edit that gives the effect of jumping forward in time. This
can be used in any type of genre of film and is mainly used in music videos
to jump in time with the beat. An example I found is a film called
Breathless the scene is of the character in a car and time moves forward
quickly to keep the audience entertained.

Fade/Dissolve:
Dissolve is when two shots are blended together in other words it is when
one scene fades out and another scene fades in. An example of this in
ndubz song papa, at the start they fade into a person sitting down and it
say ndubz on top.

180-degree rule:
180-degree rule is when two people are talking and I imagine there is a
line between them. I would realise that camera crosses the line if the
people in the conversation appear to switch places. An example of this
being used

Point of view shot:
Point of view shot is when the camera is acting as if it is the eyesight of a
person. Sometimes, point of view shot makes it look as if it is the
audience who is in the view. Here is an example of it being used for
American gangster where Denzel Washington is looking at Idris Elba

Fade and Dissolve:
Fade is a transition that is used in films. This is when it fades to black.
This mainly happens at the beginning of a film or the end of a film.
Dissolve is when the scenes are overlapping each other and it creates a
good effect to change scenes. This will engage the audience more and
make it more interesting to watch.
