Induction and Orientation
1. Overview of Business Development (Defence Dept )
Customers Details
Heavy Vehicles Factory, Avadi.
Ordnance factory, Medak.
BMP-II (Man carry & Ambulance), Medak.
Central Armor Fighting Vehicles Depot, Pune.
Bharat Dynamics Limited (Missiles), Medak.
Business Cycle
To supply products for Defence Dept of India. Registration with DGQA, Delhi (Director
General Quality Assurance) is a must.
Then Registering to the particular factory such as (HVF, CAFV) if demanded.
Tender Process (Single Tender, Open Tender, Limited Tender)
Single Tender (single known source certificate issued by DGQA) i.e. only one
supplier is available for a particular product.
Open Tender, in this tender anyone can participate and it might even be a
foreigner.
Limited Tender, Here only limited numbers of suppliers are selected according to
the need. A minimum of 3 suppliers is a must.

After identifying the tender, the tender floated is requested and obtained.
The obtained tender is passed on to the PDE (Product Development & Engineering), to
find the feasibility and also to estimate the costs involved.
After this, Business Development team negotiates with the customers and then it finalizes
the cost.
Supply order is issued by the customer.
Pilot testing is done and checked for conformance by the customer.
Then the total requirement is processed and then supplied to the customer.
The delivery is followed up by the business development team and the payment is
received from the customers (Follow up is a never ending process).

2. Overview of Business Development (Railways Dept)
Customers Details
Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi.
Chittranjan Locomotive Works.
Rail Coach Factory, Punjab.
Integral Coach Factory, Chennai.
Siemens.
Business Cycle
The Business Cycle of the Railways Dept is also similar like that of the Defence Dept.
Only a few major changes such as, registering with DGQA differs.

I was on leave for attending a pre visa document check conducted at PSGIM initiated by
Dr. Jagajeevan (for students going to the USA).

These are total range of products which are being manufactured and assembled in the
PEIL.
The majority of the components manufactured for the defense goes in to the T-72 and T-
90 tanks which are of Russian origin. So GOST standards are followed for those
components (Gosudarstvennyy Standard).
ISO 9001:2008 is also implemented in PEIL.
Take Over: To make a Presentation on Quality Circles (for explaining the line staff and
supervisors).
4. Overview of Product Development & Engineering Dept
The PDE Dept is responsible for the product development which is required by
the customers.
It fixes all the specifications including raw materials required, cost involved and
other processes which are required for a product to be completely finished.
Designing is not concentrated mainly PEIL, because its major customers are
Defence Dept of India and Railways Dept of India. So the design is pre delivered
by the customers.
PDE suggests and alters the existing design to improve efficiency, performance
and cost reduction. But all the modifications must be approved by the Customers
(Defence & Railways).

5. Overview of Material Dept
Material Dept purchases the products which are required for production, the
materials which are required is specified by the PDE Dept.
Major function of Material Dept is to reduce the lead time.
The materials must also be purchased for the best price which is available in the
market.

6. Overview of Store Dept
The Stores Dept receives the inbound delivery.
Quantity check is carried after receiving the materials.
The materials are accounted.
Quality Check is done and quality is confirmed and if not the materials are sent
back.
The materials are delivered from the stores via FIFO method.
The components required for defense department is very less in quantity but only,
a batch of materials can only be purchased and not as per requirement. So, the
shelf lives of those products are increased by re-inspecting and re-conditioning
them if required.
All the receipts/issues are carried out only through stores.

Made a presentation on 7 Basic Tools of Quality for explaining the line staff and
supervisors

7. Overview of Maintenance Dept
Preventive/Predictive maintenance.
Break down Maintenance.
Analysis is done by using the 7 QC tools.
Cleanliness & Housekeeping of premises.

Main Objectives of Maintenance Dept:
Reduction in maintenance costs.
Increasing mean time between the failures (MTBF).
Reduction in Fuel and Power cost.
Conservation of Water.

8. Overview of Finance Dept
The finance department of a business takes responsibility for organizing the financial
and accounting affairs including the preparation and presentation of appropriate
accounts, and the provision of financial information for managers. The main areas
covered by the financial department include,
Book keeping procedures.
Creating Balance sheet and Profit & Loss statements.
Providing Management Information.
Management of Wages.
Rising of Finance.

9. Overview of HR Dept
Human resource department is responsible for the hiring, paying, firing and
training of the employees in an organization. They are also involved in
communication, leadership, policy developments & organization developments.
The human resource department deals with the affairs of the staff. Its tasks
include contributing to the growth of and the achievement of the organization
wide business plan and objectives, organizational success through knowledge
about and encouragement of people, implementation of successful change
strategies and staffing of employees.
The HR department devises or charts out the macro human resources management
strategy and recruitment policies of an organization, draws up compensation
packages, benefits programs, incentives policies, health care insurance, and all
employee-related rewards and emolument packages, coordinates and conducting
training programs for employees.

Weekend Take Over: To study the basics of ISO 14001 with the help of given study
materials.
