Februaiy 7,1993. It was fteen, may-be twenty degrees at 7:30 AM with a wind chill
that made it seem ve degrees colder. Ice and snow were, unfortunately, missing. All we
needed were about 100 hardy runners and we would have ourselves a race. I'm gone,
checking out the course, and getting the re going with co-race director Jim McDermott.
At the "ranch," the phone rings, "Hell-o." "Ah, sorry to bother you, but, ah, will the race be
run today?" Katy responds, "Of course, and the race fee for non-club members is $6.00."
The individual on the other end asks how she knows that the caller is not a club member.
Katy responds, "TACONICS know we do not cancel races because it is cold. These are the
Fr eezer Fi ves. "
Although it was cold, the times were not. Vincent Keane nished the 5K course in 16:32
to win overall by 1:03 ahead of Teny Horton. In third place was Tony Galfano. On the
ner side of the race, Loma Metzger nished in rst with a time of 20:21. Connie Grace
was second, and Colleen Law, returning from the warm South American climate, nished
in third, unaffected by the cold. In the Masters Division, Eammon Coughlin sent his regrets,
while Gary Steinel pummelled out an 18:25 to win, followed by Gaiy Struve and Art
Weisberg. The women's title went to Kathleen Lyons with a 23:15. She was closely
followed by Kate Glynn and Donna Cavalieri.
On Februaiy 28 we ran the second
race in the Winter Series: the Five Mile.
Appropriately, winter snow storms had
closed the back trail, a familiar part of
t he t r adi t i onal c our s e. A new c our s e
was quickly laid out. This course
provided for a down hill start and a
down hi l l ni sh! Fi r st acr oss t he ni sh
l i ne was Bob Her mesch wi t h a t i me of
27:11. In second place was John Tracy
from the Bronx with a time of 27:19,
and i n t hi r d was Ni ck Caswel l wi t h a
ti me of 27:23. In seventh overal l wi th a
time of 28:30 was Lisa Vaill, our rst
woman nisher. TRRC's own Alyssa Lifrieri and Connie Grace were second and third,
respectively.
At a previous club meeting, interest was expressed in a Clydesdale Division. The race
directors were happy to oblige. The overall Clydesdale winner was Steve Hoanzl. He was
awarded a hand painted horseshoe and a collar which, rumor has it, was used by Sybil
Luddington's horse. Henceforth, until otherwise defeated, he is entitled to the title "Most

Ah! May at last! Whew what an ugly winter; it will be
more fun to reminisce than to go through. Your a hearty
bunch Taconic, and kudos are denitely in order for all
of you that faithfully trained regardless of the weather.
You sure kept me motivated, because if you weren't out
there, I wouldn't be.
A TRRC rst: We never before had to cancel a
race (the word wasn't in Dan Caffrey's vocabulary) but
on March 14th the 22" snow forced the closing of FDR
State Park. We thought of running the race on the
Taconic, but that was closed too. We didn't really
cancel the St. Patrick's Day Races, as a matter of fact
Brian, Harry, Susan, and Jack were busy plowing the
white stuff off the green line in the park, when the
Rangers arrived, (see "...on a break" proof photo) They
requested we reschedule for another snowy day, which
turned out to be Sunday, March 21st, with another 4"
storm. The HOT LINE worked very well with over 150
calls one day and 50+ the next. Shovels at port arms to
John Hallinan for a great job. He still speaks with a
slight quiver in his voice if anyone mentions the "s"
word. Congratulations to Bob Dennison, Jr. the 14 yr.
old winner of the two Aer Lingus tickets to Ireland.
Teatown meeting runs start at 5:30 prior to
monthly club meetings (2nd Wednesday of the month).
Nice a'job to the Mudman (Owen McC).
Grunter attendance was up over 30%, and all reports
agree it was the best mud in years.
Thank you to all the Mothers, we love you. A
card can say it, a bunch of owers too, but nothing
can say it like running with her (or cheering her on)
at the Mother's Day 5K Special on May 9th.
Now that the clocks are sprung forward, and
we're steppin' up the season (so to speak), come on
out to a race, your choice: Lake Carmel 5M - 5/1;
Mile Fly - 5/2; North County lOK - 5/16; The
Human Race 5K (run/walk) - 5/22; Lincoln Hall
5M - 6/6. See article on temporary course changes
for both the 4th of July Mahopac Classic, and the
Mahopac lOK 7/24 due to major road construction
on the Lake Road.
See ya' out there, Fredy Low

Some people just volunteer, but others risk everything. Greg Diamond is such a guy!
While sitting in his car, a gust of wind took down our nish line and crashed it into Greg's
car's windshield - shattering it! Greg scored the race, accepted an apology for my stupidity,
and refused to accept anything for the repairs. A fast runner, computer jock, eye doctor and
class guy!
Thanks to a terric crew of volunteers: to Tony Galfano and John Hallinan who laid out
the courses and helped set up the nish line, to Lariy Lenahan, Vinny Juliano, Don Lowry
Melanie Benvenue, Dave O'Toole, Dan Moftt, Bill Lifrieri, Doug Miller, Joe Porcaro, Sue
Solow, Owen McCrudden, Pete Meisler and Mike Gosset for handling trafc and splits, to
Ed McLaughlin for music and lead car, and to Rich Adamski, Larry Thorpe, Sratt
Abercrombie and Katy Quinn for registration duties, to Marge Katt for weighing Clydesdale
entries. Special thanks to Mark Einhorn for helping with the most excellent tee-shirt design.
Eat your heart out if you didn't get one. There will always be next year.

T h e b e s t l a i d p l a n s .
Like many other activities along the east coast, the annual St.
Patrick's Day road races proved to be the victim of "the blizzard".
With things pretty much snowed in on the weekend of March 13th
and 14th, John H. and Freddy Low decided to postpone the race
for a week. As only Fred can arrange, we seemed to get almost
as much publicity( including TV air time) for postponing the
race as we had prior to the race. The weather had to be better
n e x t S u n d a y . . .
J ( t hi s i s a f ami l y publ i cat i on) - t hi s was t he r st r eact i on
on the 21st as we again woke up to snow. After a quick morning
phone call(we should have had a direct line installed for this
race), we decided that having the St. Patrick's Day Races in
August would be unseemly. Besides, the weathermen who had accurately
f or ecast t he bl i zzar d wer e sayi ng t hat t hi s st or m woul dn' t amount
t o m u c h . . .
In spite of it all, those who braved the elements and found a
legal(?) place to park managed to have a good time. Irishman
Vi ncent Keane, who made i t up from the Bronx, asked a l ot of
pre-race questions concerning the course. He must have known
t hat he woul d be l eadi ng t he way f r om st ar t t o ni sh wi t h a
time of 34:19. Tom Roach (35:09) and Charlie Creel (35:37)
rounded out the top three. On the women's side, Alyssa Lieri
(40:33) outpaced Margie Katt (45:27) and COlleen Law (47:52).
Two mile entrant Robert Dennison nished just ahead of his father,
and that move put him in position to win the tickets to Ireland.
Bob couldn' t believe it when called, and it took conversations
wi t h each member of hi s f ami l y t o convi nce t hem. The t i cket s
were present ed at t he Apri l meet i ng at Teat own.
Maybe an August race wouldn't have been such a bad idea after
a l l . . .
Many thanks to all who helped out in spite of the weather!

J oi n t he HUMAN RACE
Saturday, May 22,
PepsiCo World Headquarters,
Purchase, NY.
Taconic Road Runners Club is working with
the Volunteer Center of the United Way to
present a day of great racing, walking,
fund-raising, tness, food and family fun!
You have probably received a registration
form for the Human Race in the mail by
now, but if not, ll out and return the one on
this page! Encourage the non-runners in
your family to gather pledges ($15.00 worth
gets them a T-shirt) and participate in the
5K walk. TRRC has registered as a qualify
ing non-prot agency. Designate TRRC as
the non-prot organization to receive your
pledges, and these funds will be set aside for
the TRRC scholarship fund! Or...this is a
great opportunity for your family to raise
money for the non-prot agency of your
choice. (Just be sure the organization has
registered with the Volunteer Center.) This
promises to be a real EVENT! Don't miss
it! Bring the whole family. Enjoy the
food, music, entertainment and other festivi
ties of the day while socializing with other
Taconic families. (P.S. We encourage you
to show the "Taconic Colors." Wear your
Taconic Tee-shirt or singlet that day. If
you don't have one, see Ed McLaughlin or
stop in at Running Plus in Peekskill.) For
more information about the day, or to get
pledge sheets, call the Volunteer Center at
(914) 948-4452, or TRRC Race Directors
Fied Loehfelm 628-1373 or Katy Quinn
628- 0648.

Mills, up "the hill" on Route 6N, back to
Baldwin Place Road and to the High School
track. Although the 4th of July Classic is
usually an 8 miler, both races will be lOK
and run on the same course in opposite
directions. One will go down "the hill" on
Rout e 6N and t hen cl ockwi se around Ki rk
Lake, the other race counter-clockwise and,
of course, if one goes down the other must
go up.
Try them both, front-wards that is,
and compare your times. By the way, "the
hill" notwithstanding, doesn't leave either
direction a cake-walk. If you run down 6N,
you'll have to run up Hill Street, which
didn't get its name from a television show,
but it may give you the Blues.
These changes are for 1993 only.
The 4th of July Mahopac Classic for 1994
will be back to the 8 mile distance. TRRC
and the Mahopac Chamber of Commerce
have already begun plans for a "CLASSIC
WEEKEND" with in-town food fair, rides,
hats n' horns, and of course stars n' stripes.
TAC, The Athletic Congress has changed its
name and logo this year to the more "90's"
look and feel of USA Track & Field, or
U S AT & F.
Taconic Road Runners Club is considering
a similar change. The new club name will
be: The Northern Westchester/Putnam
Count i es Tr ack & Fi el d, Road
Runni ng/ Cr oss Count r y Cl ub, or
TNWPCT&FRRCCC-see it's really quite
simple once you get the hang of it. Once
more from the top. Give me a T... OK it
was a belated April fools joke, we just
wanted to see if you where paying attention.
Good old TRRC is here to stay.
Now let's talk about our emblem that
we carry into battle, our code of arms, our
medallion of honor. It may be ready for a
90's overhaul, and who better to ask but
TRRC'ers themselves. Watcha' think? Any
ideas? Pen them out, send them in. It's not
even necessary that you use a pen (in case
you want to erase) nor is it essential that
you draw very well. We want ideas, not
absolute nished copy. There will be a
contest and some grandiose award fttting the
efforts of the winner. Send your design to:
