Ephesians 5:8-14
For at one time you were darkness, but now YOU ARE LIGHT in the Lord.
WALK AS CHILDREN OF LIGHT (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and
right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no
part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it
is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when
anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that
becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.
Prelude
THE TRUE LIGHT, which gives light to everyone, was coming
into the world. HE WAS IN THE WORLD, and the world was
made through him, yet THE WORLD did not know him. HE CAME
to his own, and HIS OWN PEOPLE did not receive him. But to all
who did receive him, WHO BELIEVED in his name, HE GAVE
the right to become CHILDREN OF GOD...
(John 1:9-12)

Litany of Darkness and Light
L: You are the children of God, children of light.
C: For at one time we were darkness, but now we are light in
the Lord.
L: Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life
and is corrupt through deceitful desires
C: For at one time we were darkness, but now we are light in

L: Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander
be put away from you, along with all malice.

L: Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such
as is good for building up.

L: Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, flthiness, foolish talk
nor crude joking among you.

Absolution
L: We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righ-
teous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only
but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:1b-2)
Exhortation
L: 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we
keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says I know him but does not
keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but who-
ever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this
we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought
to walk in the same way in which he walked. (1 John 2:3-6)
Confession
L: This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that
God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellow-
ship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the
truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship
with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all
sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is
not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our
sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not
sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. (1 John 1:5-10)
C: Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead ex-
pose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they
do in secret (Ephesians 5:11-12)

Compose a prayer based on Ephesians 5 and your answers.

L: When anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for
anything that becomes visible is light. At one time you were
darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.

L: Walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been
called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing
with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit
in the bond of peace.

L: Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and walk in love, as
Christ loved us.

L: Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as
God in Christ forgave you.

L: Put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true
righteousness and holiness.

Prayer
L: Almighty God, merciful Father, who created and completed all
things, on this day when the work of our calling begins anew, we implore
You to create its beginning, direct its continuance, and bless its end,
that our doings may be preserved from sin, our life sanctifed and our
work this day be well pleasing to You; through Jesus Christ who is our
Light and Life. Amen
C: I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your
dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that
You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and gra-
ciously keep me this night. For into Your hands, I commend myself,
my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me,
that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
