The 21 st Symposium on Chemistry Postgraduate Research in Hong Kong will be held at The University of Hong Kong on April 12, 2014 (Saturday). This Symposium will consist of a Keynote Lecture, an Oral Presentation Session, and a Poster Session. The Keynote Lecture entitled Computational Chemistry for Biomolecular Dynamics and Function will be delivered by Dr. Gerhard Hummer of Max-Planck Institute of Biophysics. The Oral Presentation Session will be consisted of six 20-minute talks, each of which will be delivered by a postgraduate student representative nominated by his/her home university. Participants who wish to present their work as posters during the Symposium are welcome to submit an abstract of their work in the prescribed format to the Symposium Secretariat via their institutional faculty representatives on or before March 10, 2014. 2 Keynote Lecture Computational Chemistry for Biomolecular Dynamics and Function

Dr. Gerhard Hummer graduated from University of Vienna in 1987 and received his Ph.D. degree in physics from Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry and University of Vienna in 1992 (Thesis Advisor: Professor Martin Neumann). After taking research scientist positions in Los Alamos National Laboratory in U.S.A., he joined the Laboratory of Chemical Physics, NIDDK, National Institutes of Health in 1999 and became Deputy Chief of the Laboratory of Chemical Physics in 2012. Since August 2013, he moved his research group back to Germany and took the position of the Director of the Department of Theoretical Biophysics in Max-Planck Institute of Biophysics.
Dr. Hummer is well recognized for his seminal contributions to the field of theoretical and computational biophysical chemistry. His current research interests include multiscale simulation of structure, motion, and function of dynamic supra-molecular assemblies, toward ultimately the development of detailed and quantitative descriptions of key biomolecular processes, including energy conversion, molecular transport, signal transduction, and enzymatic catalysis.
Dr. Hummer published more than 200 scientific research papers. He has been the recipient of many prestigious prizes and awards. In 2010, he was awarded Raymond and Beverly Sackler International Prize in Biophysics for his important contribution in understanding the physical chemistry principles in the protein stability and interactions. He also severs on the editorial board of many international peer-reviewed journals.

For the Keynote Lecture and Oral Presents: The Keynote Lecture and the Oral Presentation Session will be held in Lecture Hall 2, Centennial Campus, The University of Hong Kong
Presentation durations: (a) Keynote Lecture: 45 minutes followed by a 10-minute discussion (b) Oral Presents: 20 minutes followed by a 5-minute discussion
The lecture theatre is equipped with a desktop computer (operating system: Microsoft Windows 7 with Office 2010 Professional). All speakers are advised to use the computer system in the lecture theatre.
For Poster Presenters: The poster session will be held at Centennial Campus, The University of Hong Kong. The exact location will be announced in due course. The size of each poster board measures 135 cm (H) x 95 cm (W) (approximately 53 x 37). Posters will be displayed throughout the Symposium. Poster presenters are responsible for mounting and dismounting their posters before and after the Symposium. Each participant is allowed to be the presenting author of one poster only. However, they may be listed as co-authors in other contributions. Posters will be categorized into the following four major subject areas:
Each presenter should indicate the area of his or her poster when the abstract is submitted.
The Best Oral and Poster Presenter Awards The best presenter in the Oral Presentation Session and the best poster presenters in each of the four subject areas will be selected by a panel of judges, consisting of the Keynote Speaker and faculty representatives of the six universities. The awards will be conferred during the closing ceremony of the Symposium. Award winners must be present to receive their prizes. 7 2 Abstract Sample
