Relay for Life event
approaches. PAGE 9
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
As the school year winds down,
schools often take time to honor their
students for their achievements on the
athletic fields or in the classroom. The
Seneca High School Renaissance Club
took the evening of May 29 to recognize
students for what they do when the
grade books are put away and they
think no one is watching.
Senecas faculty and staff recognize
students who have impressed them with
their manners, determination, willing-
ness to help others, dedication or maybe
they have just made them smile every
day. Its an extremely special night. Stu-
dents who win these awards are given a
medal that can be worn at their gradua-
tion ceremony. This is always a great
event, Senecas public relations repre-
sentative Sean Cassel said.
In the weeks prior to the Renaissance
Clubs Peoples Choice Awards, held for
the last 11 years, Seneca had recognized
students with academic and athletic
awards. This night of awards is just as
important in the minds of the staff at
Seneca.
I feel this is our most important
awards night, master of ceremonies
and Seneca media specialist Kathy
Donoghue said in her opening remarks.
Renaissance Club honors character of students
NICK COHEN/The Sun
Seneca High School held a different type of awards ceremony on Thursday, May 29, recognizing students
not for their academic or athletic ability but for their character. Each student received a medal from the
teacher who nominated them that they will wear during commencement later this month.

Ceremony recognizes
47 students with medals
Tonight we are going to cele-
brate character. All of our win-
ners have impressed us, whether
it be with their manners or deter-
mination. It is said that character
is shown when no one is looking.
We want to let you know that we
are looking and you should be
recognized for it.
This years ceremony recog-
nized 47 students with medals as
well as a speech from the teacher
who was responsible for nominat-
ing them. Many of the teachers
who spoke thanked the students
for making their job that much
more enjoyable.
Principal Jeffrey Spector spoke
to the students commending
them for their attitude and com-
mitment to making Seneca a bet-
ter place to attend school.
To our students, congratula-
tions. You are not here by acci-
dent, you have done the remark-
able. On behalf of the staff, thank
you for touching our lives, Spec-
tor said.
Donoghue wanted students to
be as proud of this accomplish-
ment as they are of their athletic
or academic achievements.
To our peoples choice nomi-
nees, you are awesome and
someone wanted to point that
out. Wear your medals proudly
at graduation, Donoghue
said.
Lenape Regional High School
Districts director of programs
and planning, Christopher Heilig,
commended the students for the
environment they created at
Seneca.
The fine culture here at
Seneca is due to connections.
Seneca is a special place due to
the student, parent and teacher
connection, Heilig said.

Committee authorizes new position
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
At its monthly meeting held
May 27, the Tabernacle Township
Committee authorized the cre-
ation of a new position within the
township to help augment the
summer workload.
According to township admin-
istrator Doug Cramer, the neces-
sity of a temporary part-time of-
fice clerk is due to the townships
administrative employees taking
personal leave this summer.
The part-time clerk will handle
the daily operations of the office
including the handling of incom-
ing telephone calls and incoming
and outgoing mail delivery. The
role will provide assistance for
the township clerk, deputy clerk
and tax collector as needs arise.
Cramer said the position will
not become full time or a perma-
nent position and that the salary
is fixed and determined by town-
ship ordinance.
In other news:
Both rescue squad chief
George Jackson and fire depart-
ment chief Dave Smith made
comments in regard to the com-
mittees decision to begin the
process of dissolving the fire dis-
trict.
Im looking forward to work-
ing with the township. Its time to
move on, Smith said. Id like the
residents to know we will contin-
ue to fight fire. This is what we do.
No matter what, this is what we
have to do.
Mayor Joseph Barton was ap-
preciative of Smiths attitude.
Chief Smith, I applaud your
comments and your spirit that
you bring to the table to work for
the betterment of the residents,
he said. Jackson echoed Smiths
sentiment. I have two goals for
my department. The first goal is
to move forward and get back to
what our main focus is, which is
providing the best service to our
residents. My second goal is to
work with the fire company and
get back to where we used to be in
a cooperative effort. I look for-
ward to working with commit-
tee, Jackson said.
Residents now have the
ability to pay their tax bills via
the internet. More information is
available on the townships web-
site.

I
ts no secret that health insurance
is expensive. Thanks to Oba-
macare, health insurance is more
obtainable for Americans, but for most
of us, the cost of health insurance
especially through employer-spon-
sored plans continues to rise.
Theres nothing that we, or our em-
ployers, can do about it, unfortunately.
Now that we are required to have
health insurance, we cant just say,
screw it, Ill take a chance and have
no insurance. We are required to pay
up...and up and up and up.
So what can we do? What is in our
control? The obvious answer: Our
health.
The healthier we are, the less likely
we will need to use our health insur-
ance. And the less we need to use our
health insurance, the more likely the
cost of our health insurance will go
down in the future.
Take a look at your health insur-
ance plan, and at others that those
around you have. Most likely, there are
incentives for living a healthy lifestyle.
Join a gym, go three times a week, and
you get a discount on said gym mem-
bership. Why? Because the healthier
we are, the less it costs to insure us.
Getting healthier starts at home,
with the food we eat. And the food that
is available for us to eat is getting bet-
ter all around us.
A great place to start for healthier
options is a local farmers market.
Theyre popping up everywhere, if
you havent noticed.
According to JerseyFresh.com,
there are 11 registered farmers mar-
kets in Camden County and six in
Burlington County that run every
weekend.
Thats in addition to the countless
farm stands and farmers market spe-
cial events that take place from spring
through fall.
Never been to a farmers market? Its
worth the trip. Not only can you buy
fresh, local produce that is often
cheaper than the supermarkets, you
can also get great ideas and lessons on
how to use the products you buy.
In addition to learning more about a
healthy lifestyle, and purchasing
goods that can help you do so, visiting
a local farmers market is also a nice
change-of-pace for the summer.
So get up, go out and support local
farmers and stores by visiting your
local farmers market. It will be well
worth the trip, now and in the future.
Want cheaper health insurance?
Get healthy and start at a local farmers market

Were award winners!
I like to think that we do some pretty
good work here at The Sun. Sure, I may be
a little biased, seeing as how Ive worked
here for more than nine years, and have
played a part in how we look today as a
company.
I cant help but be proud of the work we
produce every week, covering all of our
towns on an in-depth basis.
Im also particularly proud of how far
weve come over these past nine years, and
how weve continued to transition in the
ever-changing world of the news media.
But last week, I was delivered news that
made me perhaps the proudest Ive been
since I first joined this company in March
2005.
Officially, we can consider ourselves an
award-winning news company. Officially,
two of our news department employees
can call themselves award-winning jour-
nalists.
Our very own Katie Morgan, the associ-
ate editor for The Princeton Sun, and Mary
Serkalow, the managing editor for all The
Suns, were named winners of the 2014 New
Jersey Society of Professional Journalists
Excellence in Journalism awards for
work done in 2013.
Katie won second place in the weekly
newspaper category for the Wilson Barto
Rookie of the Year, and Mary won third
place in the weekly newspaper category for
Page One Design.
They, along with our company, will be
recognized at a banquet at the end of the
month.
Please join me in congratulating both
Katie and Mary, and the rest of our news
department, for the recognition. It was our
hard work and dedication to our readers
that helped us win these awards.
Heres to more awards, and even better
news coverage, in the future!

By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Relay for Life holds a special
place in the heart of Medford res-
ident Mike Cashen.
In 2002, with his wife Cheryl,
battling cancer, the Cashen fami-
ly attended Medford Relay for Life
for the first time.
Since then, they have never
missed the event.
Mike and Cheryl will join hun-
dreds of other Medford-area resi-
dents at Relay for Life. The 18-
hour event will be held at Free-
dom Park beginning at noon on
June 7 and wrapping up the
morning of June 8.
The event has given Mike a rea-
son to have hope. Five years after
attending his first relay, Cashen
was diagnosed with cancer him-
self.
When I was diagnosed in 2007,
I was going through treatment
the time the relay was there, he
said. It kinds of gives you a new
lease.
The reason Cashen has so
much hope is because of the up-
lifting message Relay for Life fea-
tures. The event emphasizes cele-
bration, remembrance and fight-
ing back.
Cashen struggled to describe
the wave of emotions one feels
throughout the day. He acknowl-
edged the positive message gives
hope to everyone from survivors
to caregivers and families.
For him, the survivors lap of
the event is one of the most spe-
cial moments of the day.
It gives you strength to carry
on, Cashen said. When youre
told those three words, you have
cancer, your world changes.
In many ways, Cashen de-
scribed Relay for Life as an anti-
cancer event. The event is filled
with fun and celebratory mo-
ments. Theme laps are held
throughout the night where par-
ticipants can dress in goofy cos-
tumes. Contests are held in a vari-
ety of categories as well.
There is an emphasis on mak-
ing Relay for Life a community
event and not just one strictly for
those affected by cancer.
Its there for everybody,
Cashen said. You dont have to
have cancer; you dont need to
know someone who has cancer. If
you get them to come once and
see what it is all about, they will
want to come back.
Cashen said the event has al-
lowed him to make numerous
friends from the area whom he
wouldnt otherwise meet. The
friendships he has made at Relay
for Life are ones he has followed
through with and kept for many
years.
Its an amazing thing, because
the whole thing is moving and
changing, Cashen said. Theres
old people there and young peo-
ple. Its a very interesting phe-
nomena, that all of these people
come together for one cause.
Participants have been on the
fundraising trail for the last few
weeks. All proceeds raised at the
event go toward the American
Cancer Society.
People who havent already
registered are still invited to
come. Cashen encourages resi-
dents who havent attended before
to stop by. While he has many
great memories from the past 12
years, he admits they dont do jus-
tice to actually attending the
event.
Whoever you are, cancer is
going to touch you are at some
point, Cashen said. Its really
good to know this type of envi-
ronment exists there so people
can say theyre not alone.

Relay for Life event offers

The Tabernacle Historical Soci-
ety will hold its annual Strawber-
ry Social on Saturday, June 7
from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the
grounds of Tabernacles town hall
at the corner of Tabernacle-Med-
ford Lakes Road and Carranza
Road. In case of rain, it will be
held at the Tabernacle United
Methodist Church on Carranza
Road.
As a fundraiser for a Seneca
High School scholarship, the
Strawberry Social has been a
tradition of the historical society
since 1976. Its a fun time to enjoy
the fruits of the town and to meet
your fellow townspeople. While
the main attraction is the cake,
strawberries and topping, hot
dogs and beverages will also be
available. The strawberries are
always sourced from the local
farms in Tabernacle. The cakes
are all homemade, and the por-
tions are very generous. In addi-
tion, the society will have various
items available for purchase.
These include historic plates,
afghans and Christmas orna-
ments. New this year, the Dave
Hangley Band will perform live
country music.
The bicentennial of 1976 gener-
ated the idea for the community to
band together to preserve, protect
and promote the history of the
town. Once called the "Taberna-
cle in the Wilderness, Taberna-
cle was a part of Shamong, Wash-
ington Township and Chatsworth
as the Lenape Indians lived
throughout the area. The Taber-
nacle Historical Society boasts
that they have a basket woven by
the last of the Lenape, Indian
Ann. She is buried in the Taber-
nacle Cemetery.
The historical society main-
tains and preserves three build-
ings in the town. The Pepper
House was proudly owned by only
three families. It was built in 1860
by Gilbert Knight who fought in
the Civil War and was the towns
blacksmith and a member of the
Grand Army of the Republic.
Samuel and Carrie Scott were the
next owners who ran a filling sta-
tion and grocery store across the
street from the house. The last
people who owned the Pepper
House were Arthur and Clara
Pepper who resided there until
the 1950s. The Pepper House is lo-
cated on Carranza Road, the sec-
ond building from town hall.
The Friendship Schoolhouse
was not originally built in Taber-
nacle, but many of the towns peo-
ple went there. It was located in
Washington Township on a cran-
berry farm and brought to Taber-
nacle in the 1970s. The building
was restored by the society and
placed on the grounds of what is
now Sequoia Alternative School
on Carranza Road. For a number
of years, the schoolhouse was
used as a teaching tool for the
fourth graders who studied New
Jersey history and the Native
American culture. Today, historic
tours are given annually to the
third graders who visit the town
hall, Pepper House, Friendship
School, Tabernacle Cemetery and
Indian Ann burial site as well as
the Carranza Monument.
Another Tabernacle landmark
that the society maintains is the
Tabernacle Cemetery's two out-
buildings and arch. One of the
two buildings has the original
two-hole outhouse located inside.
The historical society is work-
ing to preserve the towns history.
It needs the public's help to com-
plete many projects that are
planned for maintenance and edu-
cation. All are welcome to the
Strawberry Social and to their
monthly meetings on the second
Thursday of the month at 7:30
p.m. within town hall.
