in the VIP.

STEP 3: Check the ECM.
STEP 3A: Verify the ECM (Engine Control Module) is powered on and responding to keyswitch.
Condition:
Keyswitch ON.

STEP 4: Check the J1939 circuits.

To-VIP Extension Harness.
Condition:
Keyswitch OFF.
Disconnect the Engine-To-VIP Extension Harness from the engine harness connector on the VIP and the engine-
to- VIP harness connector on the engine.
Action Specification/Repair Next Step
Inspect the J1939 + and - circuit pins in each of
the disconnected harness connectors.
Loose connector
Corroded pins
Bent or broken pins
Pushed back or expanded pins
Moisture in or on the connector
Missing or damaged connector seals
Dirt or debris on or in the connector pins
Connector shell broken
Wire insulation damage
Damaged connector locking tab.
Use the following procedure for general inspection
techniques.Refer to Procedure 019-361 in Section
19.

A damaged connection has been detected in
the CAN + and - circuits.
Clean the connector and pins.
Repair or replace the damaged harness,
connector, or pins, if possible.
Establish a proper mechanical connection.

to- VIP harness connector on the engine.
Disconnect the engine harness from the ECM on the engine.
Disconnect the J1939 termination resistor from the engine harness.

Measure the resistance.
Measure the resistance in the J1939 + and -
circuits in the engine-to-VIP harness and the
engine harness.
Less than 10 ohms?
YES

Less than 10 ohms?
NO
Repair:
An open circuit has been detected in the CAN
+ or - circuits. Repair or replace the harness
or connector.

STEP 4C: Check for a pin-to-pin short circuit in the CAN J + and - circuit connections in the following harnesses:
Engine Harness and Engine-To-VIP Extension Harness.
Condition:
Keyswitch OFF.
Disconnect the engine-to-VIP extension harness from the engine harness connector on the VIP and the engine-
to- VIP harness connector on the engine.
Disconnect the engine harness from the ECM on the engine.
Disconnect the J1939 termination resistor from the engine harness.
Action Specification/Repair Next Step
Measure the resistance.
Measure the resistance between the J1939 + and
- circuit pins and all other circuit pins in the engine-
to-VIP harness and the engine harness.
Greater than 100K ohms?
YES

Greater than 100K ohms?
NO
Repair:
A pin-to-pin short circuit has been detected in
one of the J1939 circuits.
Repair or replace the harness.

STEP 4D: Inspect the VIP electrical connections.
Condition:
Keyswitch OFF.
Disconnect the VIP to engine harness from the VIP
Open the VIP.
Disconnect the harness from the SIM containing the J1939 circuits.
Action Specification/Repair Next Step
Inspect the connections.
Inspect the VIP electrical connections from the
SIM connector to the VIP to engine harness
connector. Inspect the electrical connections for
the following:
Loose connector
Corroded pins
Bent or broken pins
Pushed back or expanded pins
Moisture in or on the connector
Missing or damaged connector seals
Dirt or debris on or in the connector pins
Connector shell broken
Wire insulation damage
Damaged connector locking tab.
Use the following procedure for general inspection
techniques. Refer to Procedure 019-361 in Section
19.

STEP 4F: Check for a pin-to-pin short circuit in the VIP.
Condition:
Keyswitch OFF.
Disconnect the VIP to engine harness from the VIP
Open the VIP.
Disconnect the harness from the SIM containing the J1939 circuits.
Disconnect the J1939 termination resistor in the VIP.
Action Specification/Repair Next Step
Measure the resistance.
Measure the resistance between the J1939 + and
- circuits in the engine harness connector in the
VIP and all other circuits in the VIP.

YES

Repair:
A pin-to-pin short circuit has been detected in
the J1939 + or - circuits in the VIP.
Repair or replace the VIP.

Connect the previously disconnected harnesses and components.

STEP 4H: Verify the ECM is communicating.
Condition:
Keyswitch OFF.
Connect all the previously disconnected harnesses and components.
Keyswitch ON.
Action Specification/Repair Next Step
Verify that the ECM is communicating properly.
Use INSITE electronic service tool or CDS to
verify that the ECM is communicating properly.
For QSB, QSC, QSL, and QSM engines use
INSITE electronic service tool and for QSD use
CDS electronic service tool to verify that the ECM
is communicating properly.
Is the ECM communicating properly?
YES
Repair:
The module hardware has failed or software
has been corrupted.
Repair: Reflash the module with the latest
software. Replace the System Integration
Module (SIM) if reflash does not correct the
issue

STEP 5: Check the on-engine termination resistor.

Disconnect the on-engine termination resistor (blue cap) from the mating connector.

Measure the resistance across the on-engine
termination resistor.

STEP 5B: Verify the resistance of the internal VIP harness termination resistor.
Condition:
Keyswitch OFF.
Disconnect the on-engine J1939 termination resistor from the mating connector.

Measure the resistance across the on-engine
termination resistor mating connector (on engine
termination resistor removed).

Repair the termination resistor connector or
replace the termination resistor.

STEP 6A: Cycle the keyswitch.
Condition:
Connect all components.
Keyswitch ON.

Clear the fault code.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position for 30
seconds.
Turn the keyswitch ON.
Use the display or an electronic service tool to
