Khalid disrupts Anwars plan?

Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim will contest the PKR deputy president
post, challenging Azmin Ali in the party election It seems li!e he is not willing to "ust let go
his menteri besar post and thus, goes all out to gi#e it a try
$rom the e#olution o% the e#ent, Khalid&s attitude has indeed changed
Anwar told Sin 'hew (aily in an e)clusi#e inter#iew that Khalid had in principle agreed to
pass on the MB post to him, but Khalid has said nothing about it
In mid*$eb, it was said that Khalid re%used to resign +e had originally been arranged to sign
a post*dated letter o% resignation but he re%used to sign ,hen being as!ed to comment on a
poll showing -./ o% Ka"ang #oters supported Anwar to ta!e o#er the Selangor menteri besar
post, Khalid had "ust responded causally and said that it was "ust a poll
In %act, ma!ing the Ka"ang state seat #acant to pa#e the way %or Anwar to become the
Selangor menteri besar was not the original intention o% Khalid It was reported that there was
an agreement among Anwar, Azmin and Khalid be%ore the resignation o% 0ee 'hin 'heh The
trio agreed that Azmin should %irst resign as the Bu!it Antarabangsa state assembly member
to create a by*election, so that Anwar could contest %or the #acant post and become the
Selangor menteri besar a%ter winning the by*election +owe#er, 0ee was the one who
resigned e#entually and the agreement collapsed
It showed that Khalid has been pressed and i% he has no intention to step down, he is e)pected
to %ight bac! %iercely +is wish%ul thin!ing is to win the party election and thereby, continues
his political li%e
+e chose to declare challenge against Azmin be%ore the by*election to con#ey the message
that he does not yield
It seems that Khalid has determined to get rid o% the party&s control as he has in!ed the
Memorandum o% 1nderstanding 2Mo13 with the %ederal go#ernment o#er the water supply
issue without noti%ying in ad#ance the party&s leaders It has, howe#er, triggered a doubt
among Pa!atan Ra!yat component parties As the content o% the Mo1 has been !ept in secret,
it raised a 4uestion o% lac! o% transparency ,ould the 0angat 5 Pro"ect be contracted to
cronies and would the cost %or water restructuring be increased6
Khalid said that the reason to !eep the Mo1 con%idential is to a#oid the inter#ention o% some
PKR leaders I% his allegations are true, these leaders ha#e #iolated the commitment o%
de%ending the people&s interests as increasing the RM.7- billion purchase price will bene%it
the water supply company
In %act, Anwar and Azmin cannot blame Khalid %or acting on his own as when they planned
%or the Ka"ang by*election, they did not discuss with the (AP and PAS either Penang 'hie%
Minister 0im 8uan 9ng had admitted that he recei#ed no prior notice about it
The script written by Anwar is to settle the Selangor PKR in%ighting and march towards
Putra"aya The subse4uent de#elopment, howe#er, has gone out o% the script Khalid, who is
gentle and does not !now politics, might become the biggest obstacle
It is belie#ed that Anwar could win the by*election But i% Khalid re%uses to step down,
Pa!atan Ra!yat would ha#e to decide who should be the menteri besar through an internal
poll (oes PAS ha#e another plan6 ,ould PKR state assembly members supporting Khalid
change their direction6
The PKR party election has been postponed to May :: I% the party election is going to decide
Khalid&s %ate, the issue will continue to haunt the party %or o#er a month a%ter the Ka"ang by*
election and it is not conduci#e to the operation o% the state go#ernment
Anwar&s wi%e (atin Seri ,an Azizah ,an Ismail and daughter ;urul Izzah are seen to tend
to support Khalid while Anwar has been relying too much on Azmin I% the party election
leads to a split, it would be de#astating to the Selangor state go#ernment
Although Khalid claimed that his trac! record gi#es him ad#antage o#er Azmin, party
election depends on grassroots %orces, which he is relati#ely wea! compared to Azmin
Meanwhile, the Selangor water supply agreement might also detonate an internal con%lict
A%ter all, politics has no way to get rid o% partisan interests
A%ter the 5<:= general election, despite the wea!er cohesion, the o#erall situation has
remained %a#ourable %or Pa!atan Ra!yat, particularly the B; has %ailed to e%%ecti#ely manage
the national debt and Prime Minister (atu! Seri ;a"ib Raza! has been %acing internal
pressure +owe#er, the chaos in Selangor might gi#e the B; an opportunity to di#ert
attention
Pa!atan Ra!yat could !eep Ka"ang, but it must ensure that it causes no damage to public
con%idence As (AP Parliament leader 0im Kit Siang said, >A +ouse di#ided cannot stand>
Pa!atan Ra!yat must o#ercome the big trouble or e#erything that loo!s good might turn out
as only an illusion
